Southport FC

Southport Football Club are an English football club, based in Southport, Merseyside. They are currently in the Conference National, and play their home matches at Haig Avenue, which has a capacity of 6,008 (1,884 seated, 4,124 standing). They are known by their nickname "The Sandgrounders".

I have decided to take charge at Southport FC, to try and take them to the summit of English football. Southport are the fourth most famous football team in Merseyside, behind Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers.

Hopefully though, during my reign "The Sandgrounders" will surpass their city rivals and become a giant of the game.

After the game i immediately said this was the feeling that i have missed for so long, that real supporting. The real hooligans who stand by your side. Good or bad times, good or bad ball. They go through the fire with you, through thick and thin until the final whistle - Royston Drenthe[b

I am from Southport and will be following this! I have always previously done a Sandgrounder file but haven't on this game...

Pre-Season

As soon as I took over at Southport, I went about evaluating the squad that was at my disposal. I soon made note of a number of areas that could be strengthened, but unfortunately due to my limited budget, I wouldn’t be able to address all of them.

Signings

Mark Leech – Free Transfer - £0
Dylan Vickers – Free Transfer - £0
Thomas Lyskov – Free Transfer - £0
Andras Stiebar – Free Transfer - £0

Results

Rochdale (H) 3-1
Sheffield United (A) 1-2
Milwall (H) 0-2
Cheltenham (H) 1-2

Verdict

Although my Pre-Season campaign may not have been that successful on paper, I was pleased with the outcome. My side showed some real fighting spirit against much bigger teams, and not once did they bow to their superior opponents and accept defeat.

I am really trying to get rid of any soft core that might exist within the team, and to instill a sense of belief and a never-say-die spirit.

That should stand me in good stead throughout the league campaign.

August

Stockport (H) 1-0
York (A) 0-3
Wrexham (H) 2-2
Forest Green (A) 0-2
Lincoln (H) 0-2
Gateshead (A) 5-5

I must admit that, come the 30th of August, I was on the brink of resignation.
Without a win since my first game as manager, my team were struggling in the depths of the Blue Square Bet Premier, with lacklustre performances and goals being leaked all over the place.

The players weren’t responding to my coaching, and I was fearing that my lads weren’t the “battle hardened men” I wanted them to be.

2-0 up in the North East on a cold night, I had decided to quit after the game.

Then this happened.

The game finished 5-5, and after a battle I was convinced to stay on.

Will I regret this decision? Probably.

Part of the reason I love being Southport is because it's never an easy team to manage, chances are you're never going to get promoted in the first season. You really have to work for it and want it and I think it's this aspect of the game that make it more satisfying...

For the first time in my FM career I'm really faced with a proper challenge.

I'm going to stick with it.
