Roger Johnson was later sent of for bottom club Wolves. Adam Walker's Southampton are now in 16th place.

    Southampton Trash Spurs In Cup

Tottenham Hotspur were beaten on their own ground 4-1 by Adam Walker's struggling Southampton in the Carling Cup. The home side got off to a bad start when top scorer Niko Kranjcar was sent off for a silly and unnecessary foul on defender Jose Fonte. Craig Dawson broke the deadlock after half an hour with a header on his return following an injury. Another defender, Weligton, then doubled Southampton's lead in the second half but Scott Parker pulled on back for Spurs with a header. Yaya Sanogo sealed the win for the visitors before Pablo Zeballos scored an own goal in injury time to make sure Southampton were into the hat for the next round.

Southampton Earn Respectable Draw With Chelsea

Southampton and Chelsea couldn't be separated in a 1-1 draw at St Mary's Stadium. Near the end of a rather dull first half, John Terry handled the ball in the area and a penalty decision was made by referee Howard Webb. Morten Gamst-Pedersen stepped up to take the penalty but shot wide of the goal to make the scores 0-0 going into half time. Fortunately, the second half lit up with end to end action and Yaya Sanogo continued his fine form to put the underdogs ahead with a good finish past Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech. Sadly for the Saints, Spanish midfield maestro Juan Mata equalised with a superb effort, placed right into the top corner of Gabor Babos's goal.

    Southampton And Arsenal Draw

Southampton earned a very respectable 1-1 draw with Arsenal at St Mary's Stadium. No goals in the first half meant that it was 0-0 going into half time but Adam Lallana rocked the Gunners in the 85th with a tap in from two yards thanks to Jason Lowe's cross. The Saints thought they had won it and must have relaxed because former Southampton youngster Theo Walcott equalised with just a minute left to play. Yaya Sanogo was unable to play for Southampton after he received five yellow cards in the league this season.

    Saints XI:

    Youthful Saints In Thrilling Draw

A young Southampton travelled to Villa Park and expected to lose but instead played out a thrilling 0-0 draw with Aston Villa. The first chance of the game came in the first half to Southampton's Yaya Sanogo who missed a guilt edged opportunity when he was one on one with the keeper. Darren Bent hit the bar twice either side of half time and Gabor Babos made some fantastic saves to keep the final score level and keep Southampton, just, out of the relegation zone. Unfortunately for the Saints, star striker Yaya Sanogo had to limp off the pitch injured.

    Saints Thrash Trotters In Thriller

Bolton were favourites to win the game against Southampton but the Saints upset the odds and pulled off a magnificent display in a 7-3 win over the home side. Nigel Reo-Coker put the home side ahead after quarter of an hour but Billy Sharp equalised fifteen minutes later. Rickie Lambert then ended his goal drought with a header past Jussi Jaaskelainen but Roland Juhasz made the scores level going into half time. It seemed like Southampton were playing a different XI to the one they were playing in the first half and Adam Walker's tactical substitution of bringing Ched Evans on for Billy Sharp was a stroke of genius. Yaya Sanogo slid in just after half time to put Saints back in the lead and Hogan Eprahim then extended the lead with a header thanks to Ched Evans cross. Welshman Evans then got a goal five minutes later and then got his second after only 75 minutes. Ivan Klasnic missed a penalty but made up for his error by scoring three minutes later to make the score 6-3 but Eprahim then ended the rout with another header and put Saints up to 15th in the league.

    Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton)
    Billy Sharp (Southampton)
    Rickie Lambert (Southampton)
    Roland Juhasz (Bolton)
    Yaya Sanogo (Southampton)

    Ched Evans (2) (Southampton)
