Inconsistent performances

On my Zaragoza save i have this defensive-mid called Abel Aguilar, who's stats are good, but he is inconsistent, some games he'll be key to my midfield and sometimes winning the match, but at others he just falls apart. His back up is Mohamed Diame (Wigan) who stats are worse but he's much more reliable and consistent however he's not a game winner. Any advice on what to do?

team talk is probably the most important thing here. you need to find a way to see what affects your player the best. at times you might need to tell him that you expect a performance etc.

Worked perfectly thanks, had an important game against Barca and Diame was injured, or I might have played him. Said to Aguilar that I expect a performance, a he stepped up, scoring a 30-yard freekick at the Nou Camp in the 5th minute of ET even though there were only 4min shown. Magical Stuff.

OT: Update for my Zaragoza save is due an update in the next two weeks...(see my blog)

i have switched my team talk completely to the same scheme:

pre-match: "i expect a performance tonight/i expect you to win tonight"

half-time: most players above 7.0 -> don't expect performance to drop
most of them below 7.0 -> disappointing
a mix with some >7.5 -> disappointing if the other are below 7.0 with individual praise for those above 7.5

works like a charm

I'm starting to use team talks more now, I usually did the old "ask assistant", but its paying off especially at half time.

sounds like a good system, but one thing about team talks in FM is that there are a lot of different ways to handle it. everyone can have their own system. which is nice.

even though i would like more things to be said in team talks as they are an important part of management.

yeah.
just a little hint on how good my system works:

i destroyed liverpool 4-2 in the FA-cup with leeds(championship right now) after being down 0-2.
4 days later i totally killed burnley 6-0, they are currently 3rd in the ch'ship.

Does it affect the players if you always click ask assistant? does it make any difference if you say something?

every assistant is different and will handle things differently.

team talks affect the players. sometimes more than others. it could have a bad affect on the players lets say your assistant doesnt give them enough praise. and some of the squad members will be concerned etc.

and talking can help make a average player be the best player in the world in 1 match. and can make the best player in the world absolute shite in 1 match.

so yes talking does have an affect, but not always.
