FM 2020 Fantasy Scenarios - World Super League (WSL) - FM20 Edition

Graphics Pack Update

The DB is already 100% stable and feature complete; and I'm already in my 3rd season.
I've created 24 new competition logos for the following divisions:

All primary Super League divisions
B Leagues
Premier League 2 (Top B League)
U19 Divisions
U19 Premier League
UEFA Reserve League
UEFA Youth League

I created these logos so I don't have to look at the boring old FM generated logos.
Some of these logos are only shown at the end of the season when the promotions/relegations are announced.
NOTE: There were already 43 competition logos for all the main divisions, this just adds logos for the reserve/B-team and U19 teams as well!

Anyone already with a save game can just replace their 'graphics/WSL' folder with the new files.
You will need to 'clear cache' and 'reload skin' for the new logos to show.

Enjoy!

End of update announcement ...

Introduction

Building on 3 years of experience (ESL17, WSL18, WSL19), with over 23,000 downloads and Steam subscriptions, welcome to the next evolution of the World Super League.

After 1 year of planning; 4 months of work (most of my free time) and over 1,000 hours of testing; this is the most ambitious FM super league I've ever created and probably the most challenging (and rewarding) FM experience you'll ever have!

What is this?

WSL is a 'Super League' that replaces all the leagues in England, with a custom league structure where clubs from all over the world play together. There are custom leagues, cups, awards and graphics (custom league logos and backgrounds). The top 500+ clubs from around the world are included, as well as all 160+ playable clubs from England. All clubs compete in one of several UEFA Leagues; and they all have a B-team and U19 team.

This is also the highest quality and most advanced Super League mod available; written by a software developer, who actually plays it for 1000+ hours each year!

Goals for this edition:

  • Create a much more challenging but rewarding Premier League.
  • There should be a lot more clubs fighting for promotion into the Premier League.
  • More divisions below the Premier League also provides very good quality loan clubs for wonderkids to develop.
  • Replace boring league names like `Division 4e` with interesting league names from around the world.
  • Create an independant U19 and Reserve/B-team system (requested).

Features

  • 828 clubs.
  • 69 countries.
  • 9 Divisions.
  • 340 Awards.
  • 50,405 DB Changes.
  • Completely new league structure with regional 'themed' leagues and groups.
  • The top 500+ clubs in the world are included.
  • All 160+ playable clubs from England are included.
  • All clubs still play in England.
  • No Brexit, and no work permits.
  • No changes to the default international competitions.
  • All clubs keep their 'based nation', so youth players will come from their original country.
  • Custom graphics; backgrounds, logos and trophies.
  • Used the editor in Advanced mode, using many advanced rules and features.
  • All clubs have a B-team (U23) and U19 team with their own leagues and cups.
  • B-team and U19 leagues have independent promotion/relegation systems.
  • 3 of 7 subs.
  • League transfer windows between 9 June to 31 August and 1~31 January.
  • U21 players don't need to be registered.
  • U19 & B-teams don't require registration.
  • All clubs play in one of the UEFA leagues which is their continental cup.
  • Perfect schedules.
  • Highest quality with lots of testing and balancing.
  • Created by a software developer with a very high attention to detail.

League Structure

The league structure is designed to provide the maximum challenge and competition for the Premier League clubs. 88 clubs play in the Super League 1 divisions; Bundesliga, LaLiga, Ligue 1 and Serie A with 22 clubs each and a relegation/promotion playoff to get into the Premier League. This provides a very unique and difficult but rewarding challenge. However, it also allows Premier League clubs to find very good quality loan clubs for their wonderkids. You'll need a virtually perfect season to get into the Premier League.
But it's a privilege, not a right!

The lowest 4 leagues (SL5~SL8) are filled with lower league clubs from England. They are there for guys like me who want to start from the bottom and play LLM (lower league management). When you get into the Premier League, you can also remove the bottom 4 leagues (SL5~SL8) because they don't really offer much advantage or challenge to the Premier League clubs. Removing the bottom 4 leagues will also help to speed up processing.

*Regional Leagues and Groups

As you can see from the new league structure this year, the league consists of various regional 'themed' leagues in a single league structure.
For example; the Bundesliga division will have mostly German clubs, but it will also include clubs from other countries.

The idea behind this is just to give the 'feeling' that leagues from around the world joined together. Each league has a different theme, color, background etc.

However, all clubs still play in England!

Note: This is not the full list of clubs!

Note:

  • The screenshots above only show 252 clubs of 828 clubs! (30%)
  • Screenshots of ALL leagues and clubs can be found on the Steam page!
  • The league names do not restrict clubs from those countries, they are just there for 'theming'. For example; Celtic, Everton, Aston Villa, Olympiakos and Sporting all play in LaLiga; with 7 Spanish clubs at that level.

How challenging is this mod?

Pep Guardiola won the FA Cup, finished 3rd in the Premier League, runner-up in the UEFA Champions League, entered the European Hall of Fame, gets Manager of the Month and still gets fired.

This mod can be absolutely brutal! But it's also extremely rewarding, all the pain and suffering will be worth the victory and the glory!

Why do I create the WSL

I create this mod for myself every year, because I don't play the base game, it's just not challenging (or balanced) enough for me.
So I create something that I will play for 1000+ hours every year, and I share it here for others to enjoy.
For me to invest 1000+ hours of my precious free time, I require something exceptional to keep me entertained.
Therefore, this db/mod is made with the highest level of passion, love and care; and I hope others will agree and enjoy playing it as much as I do!

Recommended & Compatible mods

* Requires FM 20.4

It might work on older versions, but I haven't tested it on older versions.

Warning: Long startup time

Please note that there is a long intial load time to setup the leagues.
But after setup, it will be faster to process.

Steam Workshop vs. Direct Download

The Steam Workshop allows you to 'subscribe' to the mod, and get regular real-time updates to the main .fmt file.
However, the Steam Workshop doesn't include all the additional graphics; competition logos and background images I've created.
For the best gameplay experience, I suggest you subscribe to the Steam Workshop file to get regular updates to the .fmt file,
but then download the additional .zip file here and extract the graphics into the /graphics/WSL folder !
NOTE: The Direct Download also includes the latest .fmt file for your convenience.

Updates

Please check this page every few days for any further updates!

How to Install WSL FM20

Extract files:

Copy the file: `World Super League FM20 v1.0.fmf` to:
C:\Users\[__USERNAME__]\Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2020\editor data

NOTE: .fmf files must be placed directly in the `editor data` folder without sub-folders in `editor data` folder!

Copy the `graphics` folder to:
C:\Users\[__USERNAME__]\Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2020\graphics

The custom graphics are compatible with other logo and background packs! Just make sure my pack is under /graphics/WSL/

Start new career game, select `World Super League FM20 v1.0` from the `Database` Drop down box on top right, then click `Advanced Setup` and select England (Super League 8 should be selected by default).

NB NB NB: Please disable all other custom leagues and database changes in the `Database` Drop down box! This mod has been heavily edited and tested, so other custom databases might break it!

Other nations are NOT necessary, ALL the clubs you need are inside England.

It's normal to see all the other countries are disabled!

If the custom graphics don't show, check the file paths again and then go to `Preferences -> `Reset` (bottom left) -> click `Clear Cache` ... then click `Reload Skin` on the bottom. This can be done anytime during or after starting a new game!

Final thoughts

This mod has taken hundreds of hours of my free time, so I really hope you appreciate the effort and my attention to detail!
Please leave a comment if you enjoyed it! I like seeing feedback, it motivates me to keep doing this!

Good luck, I hope you enjoy the challenge and may the football gods be with you on your journey to world domination!

The UEFA Europa League is bugged ... This bug prevents any team from EL4 to advance past the group stage.
I can confirm that this bug exists. Thank you for picking this up and reporting it. I'm currently working on a bugfix, and I'm deeply sorry for any inconvenience!

The UEFA Europa League is bugged.
In EL4 the teams that qualify from the group stage to the round of 32 doesn't enter the competition.
Instead It's the 1-4th place from EL3 that enter this round.
1-4th place in EL2 enter both the round of 32 in EL2 and EL3.
This bug prevents any team from EL4 to advance past the group stage.

They're not selectable when choosing a team to play as, it appears their first team play in both the top league but also the B-team league? I'm not entirely sure, but something is quite wrong here.
If this is happening, then you have another league mod loaded.
Please unselect other mods before starting your game!
Some mods are ok, like adding new players and managers, like `legends` mods.
But mods that add new leagues, especially changes to England or European competitions will break my mod!

I will probably do this later with an update to this years version.

Glad to hear that, and looking forward to it. Will make the UEL a lot more competitive.

    Darthfurion:
And I don't know how much real value it will bring, like many real clubs complain about the Carabao cup. I think it would be too much.

I'd still very much dig it, because it would allow for squad rotation, but then again, I'm a bit special here and you're probably right.

The other arguments seem reasonable enough and I accept them. Thank you for your work and for the constant improvements.

The season-end records display all mine as records lows, despite winning the championship:
Hi, this is probably because there are no league records when you start a new game. Everything is new in the leagues. There is nothing that my mod does to generate records, they are managed by the game itself, not this mod.

I would give it a few more seasons, I wouldn't worry about it now. I've checked seasons in 2020 and the records do they look strange, but I also checked a simulation in 2024 and they look normal. Give it a few season. You can also try simulating a few seasons if you are worried. But I can't do anything about the competition records.

    leverkuhn:
    March being often empty
In March the players go away on International duty, and usually play 2x International friendlies. I set the league to check 7 days before Internationals, so there are no matches scheduled at least 1 week before any International matches, like EURO/FIFA Qualifiers or friendlies. Usually the clubs only play 1 or 2 league matches in March. Except if they are in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals, which is also played in March. Even if the PL teams aren't playing, they avoid having matches scheduled on those days because of the other clubs that do play. I think I could improve the scheduling here, by spreading the UEFA and FA matches more. When they are too close together, then there are no league matches being played.

    leverkuhn:
Making bigger UCL groups so that each team plays 8 games instead of the current 6.
This will be difficult with the current league structure. The way the leagues are designed (number of clubs and league structure) was designed to support the UEFA UCL comp. For example, the PL has 20 clubs. The SL1 has 88 clubs, which play one round of qualifiers, leaving 44 clubs. 44+20=64 clubs enter the CL group stage. Last year there were 80 clubs in the group stage (after qualifiers), so they played 8 games each. To get 80 clubs, I would need 16 extra clubs, but the league structure doesn't easily provide a way for me to get 16 clubs without affecting the Europa League qualifiers etc. The Europa League takes the 144 SL2 clubs, 144 / 2 = 72 / 2 = 36 + 44 (losers from CL qualifiers) = 80 clubs. It's not easy to get 16 extra clubs from that!

    leverkuhn:
I have also considered creating a second cup (League Cup).
I could probably create a League Cup with the PL and SL1 clubs.
88 SL1 clubs play a qualifier round, like the CL qualifiers. Leaving 44 clubs. 44 + 20 PL clubs = 64 clubs then go through knockout. That would be an additional 6 matches. However, it would significantly affect the fixture congestion of the PL clubs. And I don't know how much real value it will bring, like many real clubs complain about the Carabao cup. I think it would be too much.

    leverkuhn:
Premier League teams (specially the weaker ones) play too few games per season (45-50).
The weaker teams should do better in the CL group stage. There are 32 places and only 20 PL teams. I've also seen them come 3rd in the group stage, but they should have played harder and better, they have no excuse for coming 3rd!

For me, the issue is not necesarily giving the weaker teams more matches to play, but giving the strongest teams that want to contest all major competitions; the best opportunity to field their strongest players. Playing anything over 60 matches a season is really challenging. I've just run a simulation where Man City won the PL, and made it to the CL and FA Cup finals. They played 60 matches. This rarely happened in last years version (where a single club made it to both the FA Cup and CL finals). I do suppose that it's more realistic to overload the schedule, however, the AI is not intelligent enough to prioritize competitions. So what happens is they just burn out their players before the finals, making it even easier to win.

    leverkuhn:
I have also noticed a much lower amount of loans being made by the AI than last year.
I've run many simulations on this, and I don't think it can be fixed. I notice that there are many loans in the beginning, then they seem to reduce significantly over time. It might be because of the B team and U19 teams, the clubs now maintain a much larger squad size. But over time, the lower tier teams also have more money, so they don't rely on loan players as much because they can just buy the players they need.

    leverkuhn:
I miss third-placed UCL Group Stage teams entering the Europa League knockout stages
I will probably do this later with an update to this years version.

PS: I'm currently running a simulation where I've reset the PL money to the same as the base game, and significantly reduced all the money in lower leagues. Then I also removed the additional income and debt of all clubs. I want to see what the affect of less money will have on the entire league structure. Also, the player wages and transfer amounts are reset. I want to see what conclusions I can derive from this experiment. So far, it's actually looking far more interesting and promising. Fewer transfers, but the transfers that happen are much more significan. I think the clubs are being much more careful with their money.
  • leverkuhn's avatar
I've played the database for some hours and I'm still impressed by the level of refinement achieved. Some minor competition suggestions I'd make for next year's version are:

    - I miss third-placed UCL Group Stage teams entering the Europa League knockout stages. I think it would be fair for them to fight for some silverware. Otherwise, they end their european campaigns too soon.

    - Overall, the Premier League teams (specially the weaker ones) play too few games per season (45-50, with March being often empty). This is due to their league being smaller and the fact they enter both cups at a later stage. I would consider three solutions for this:

    a) Sending third-placed UCL Group Stage teams into UEL knockout rounds (see above) so they can still fight for some silverware.

    b) Creating a second UCL Group Stage so that most Premier League teams play at least 12 continental games per season.

    c) Making bigger UCL groups so that each team plays 8 games instead of the current 6.

I have also considered creating a second cup (League Cup), but it would collapse the schedule of low-tier teams.

Otherwise, I have also noticed a much lower amount of loans being made by the AI than last year, although to be fair this problem is also present in the official database (don't know why).

    Hope this is helpful.

The only issue I've seen is on the news screen (see attached).

The issue reported by user `newtestleper` has been fixed. It's a minor text issue, not critical but can be annoying.
Actually, it's caused by a bug in the official FM editor when you duplicate some items, some things don't get duplicated properly (in this case the short name of the "Team of the Week" award, even though it's visible in the editor, it doesn' pull through to the game).
Anyway, it's fixed now. It's not a critical issue, just display text for the "Team of the Week" awards.
You'll need to start a new game with the new .fmt file to use the hotfix; or if you can live with it, then there's no need to restart, it's just text!
If you've subscribed to the WSL file on Steam, then you'll need to completely restart FM for it to download the new version.

every player has a value so high
This is true, but mainly in the first season; after the first season, the game will begin to re-balance the squads and the values will begin to stabilize. The first season is definately the hardest, it's hard to find reasonable transfers, but just get through the first season; then the values, squads and transfer budgets will begin to make sense. A lot of teams have unbalanced squads or individual players compared to their reputation and strength against clubs in other leagues and countries, so give the game some time to rebalance. It's hard, but it will worth it.

Incredible work! Best fantasy mod ever done.

The only issue I have encountered is that it feels a bit overwhelming the fact that every player has a value so high even if he is playing in Super League 4. I find values too high, for example the whole Norrkoping squad have values around 20 or 30 million in the first season and if you want to buy any of their players you have to pay 40 million for a player who is playing in the fifth tier.

    Otherwise, congratulations!

Loving the database. Kudos on the work you did. The only issue I've seen is on the news screen (see attached). The league name is also omitted in the awards emails.

I've already sent a €10 donation to you. Take is as a small sign of gratitude and admiration! Good work must be encouraged.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.

Actually, it was your comments and suggestions about the reserve and youth teams from last year that inspired me to create them!
So thanks for that and hope you like it!

Again, thanks for the donation, I'm happy you enjoy my work!

I've just loaded it but by the looks I'm already very impressed

Your work with the Reserve and Youth Leagues seems astounding and adds another whole dimension to the mod. I also like the facelift to the main leagues and the new promotion/relegation system.

I've already sent a €10 donation to you. Take is as a small sign of gratitude and admiration! Good work must be encouraged.
