It was a regular Monday morning with a light breeze outside and a cold temperature which hit me flat in the face as I stepped from out of my Audi R8. With my coffee in my right hand and a scout report of our next opposition in my left hand, I approached the doors of the training ground office and as always, I was one of the first people to arrive.

As I entered the quiet and cozy reception the first thing I noticed was her. Lucy, the girl, the secretary, the one I loved. As I walked past her desk I tried not to make eye contact too nervous to even slip out a word from my mouth and greet her. I hurried on towards my office but as I went off she happily welcomed me,

“Good Morning, Mr. Hull”.

I looked back encouraged by her manner when she spoke to me, her beautiful eyes glared at me, smile beaming across her face. The only words I could mutter however were,

“Oh-um morning”.

Disheartened by my stuttering reply I looked down at my feet too embarrassed to face her again.

“Is there a problem, Mr Hull?” she queried.

“No, no! Of course not, it’s just…. well how can I put it. Would you mind maybe… errr… possibly going out to dinner this Friday night?”

“Yeah, I would love to.”

“Really? That’s great!” I felt so upbeat. I couldn’t believe this was happening, she had agreed to go out with me!

“As friends, right?” My world came crashing back to me. I didn’t want to go as FRIENDS. I wanted more than that, I wanted some ACTION! I was in the GOD DAMN friend zone! There is no escaping the friend zone. “Yeah of course, as friends.” I didn’t have the courage to speak out about my real feelings. For now, being friends was the best it could get for me.

Alright Blue, I have just read your entire story, from start to end. Amazing. It progressively gets better and I can see you become a better writer as you go on. It's a really enthralling story. I only wish my performances with Stockport were anywhere near as good. I wish you luck for the remainder of the season.

February Review

Manchester United 2-0 Portsmouth

40’ Edison Cavani

57’ Georgi Milanov

Jonny Evans

We were absolutely dominated during the entirety of this game however only conceded two goals as well fell to a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, at Old Trafford. This was always going to be a difficult match but we could not get into the game at all and I am honestly shocked that Manchester United didn’t score many more goals because they had 39 shots in total and controlled the game. We just didn’t turn up and play are usual game which is disappointing but I can understand that we were up against good opposition who were better than us on the day.

Portsmouth 3-2 Wigan

14’ Jordan Bowery

19, 90’ Yoann Gourcuff

29’, 55’ Gary Madine

Yoann Gourcuff

We were rather fortunate in this game as we scraped a 3-2 victory over Wigan, at Fratton Park. Although we did go 3-1 up we were never in control of the game and Wigan created a fair amount of chances but were denied by the woodwork a number of times. It was by no means a good performance as our passing and ball retention was not great but thankfully we defended well in the end and held off for the win.

QPR 0-1 Portsmouth

30’ Jack Baldwin

Jack Baldwin

Despite going down to 10 men in the 49th minute after Michael Keane was sent off we clinched a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, at Loftus Road. By the time we had a man sent off we were already in front which was an advantage however we continued to compete evenly with QPR even with one less player which was very encouraging. We put in a sound defensive display restricting them to only 2 shots on target both of which were long distance shots and we were decent attacking wise also however could not score another goal after Baldwin’s opener partly due to some good goalkeeping.

Portsmouth 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

32’ Luciano Vietto

Bakary Kone

We put in another astute defensive performance as we grinded out a 1-0 victory against Tottenham, at Fratton Park. We knew that Tottenham would be very tough opposition and they did not stop attacking all game but we dug in defended excellently and Luciano Vietto snuck in a goal on the counter attack to give us a very important win and three points.

Chelsea 3-1 Portsmouth

33’, 51’ Nelson Oliveira

47’ Bakary Kone

52’ Andre Carillo

Nelson Oliveira

We were outplayed, outclassed and outfought here as we lost 3-1 to Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge. I have absolutely no qualms about this loss, the players put in a valiant, hardworking performance however at the end of the day they are just not as good as Chelsea. It is incredibly tough to get a result against a Jose Mourinho side especially at Stamford Bridge and I am willing to say ‘fair play’ to Chelsea, they deserved the win.

Portsmouth 1-2 Arsenal

71’ Danny Welbeck

74’ Ashley Walker

82’ Ashley Walker

Danny Welbeck

This is another game in which we were outclassed in and outplayed as we lost 2-1 to Arsenal, at Fratton Park. We gave it our all which on the day was not quite enough which is slightly disappointing and I would have liked to have gone a bit further in the F.A. Cup however we were knocked out by a good side in Arsenal. We got our revenge on them though in the Capital One Cup Final.

Portsmouth 1-0 Arsenal

11’ Jordan Bowery

Jack Baldwin

Well what can I say this was a fantastic game as we beat Arsenal 1-0, at Wembley Stadium, to lift the Capital One Cup. What a result and all credit goes down to the players who made it all happen. It was a brilliant day and a brilliant triumph. (Live Commentary Update, HERE)

League Table

Managers Thoughts

This was a pretty good month with the stand out moment and most memorable part of the month being the Capital One Cup Final triumph over Arsenal, of course. That was a momentous occasion and an excellent victory. We also picked up some vital league victories over Wigan, QPR and Tottenham to go up to second in the league which is brilliant!

Player of the Month

Jack Baldwin

Jack Baldwin wins the February PoTM award after some fantastic displays at the heart of the defence for Pompey this month. The 23 year old has put in some excellent performance being an absolute rock at the back, picking up a couple of MoTM awards and also scoring the match winning goal against QPR.

"Bye, I will see you soon" were the trailing words I said as I left the coffee shop after an encounter with her. Muttering under my breath though, I revealed my true feelings, "I love you.."

I had finally gone out with her now and it had been a couple of weeks since we first went to dinner. I put my nerves behind me and had a great evening, even if she saw us just as friends. To think that I was a top class football manager not scared by anyone in football however only just managed to get on with a girl, was ridiculous. But as you and many others know, my talents as a football manager certainly weren't ridiculous.

We had started to meet fairly regularly visiting the same coffee shop each time we met outside of work. She was an avid football fan, which made me even more attracted to her, and supported Portsmouth, one of the reasons she became secretary at the club. We would chat about football a bit and she would occasionally ask me questions about being the manager of Portsmouth but most of the time we just spoke about life in general. I was able to talk to her with no pressure on my back, I felt so comfortable when with her, she really was something.

At the training ground, every morning I would pass her, from time to time I would perhaps greet her with the simple words of ‘Good Morning’ and walk on. We never told anyone else of our visits to the coffee shop together. The reaction would be uncomfortable, to say the least and as for the press...they twist things upside down. I desperately tried to impress her though, I wanted to be with her. The problem was though, she was seeing someone.

Late into the evening, on a cold typical night in England, I sat at home with a video of our previous match against Chelsea playing on my TV screen. Things hadn't gone to plan and we had lost the game 3-1. As usual I was fully focused on my work, busy trying to note our defensive errors and what we needed to work on in training the following day. Not caring for the outside world my mobile phone regained my attention and blurted out a sound. I had received a message. I reached across to the table in the middle of the room and grabbed hold of my phone. Staring down at the screen of my mobile I saw the text message….

Unhesitant, I made my way over to her house. This could be my chance I thought to myself. She didn't live too far away from my home so it didn’t take too long for me to get over to her. I made my way too the front door, looking down at the shards of glass covering the front doorstep, I cautiously knock. Tears are running down her face as she answers and welcomes me in to her house.

Running over the events of her evening she struggled to hold back her pain and depression through the tears which flowed from her eyes. She leaned against me, taking my hand and we hugged. Comforting her and holding her tight, I could see she was at ease and was comfortable within my arms.

As I helped her clear her thoughts and the house, we once again shared a hug as I prepared to depart. Her night had been horrible and so had her now ex-boyfriend. I stepped towards the door of her house ready to leave, I had done my best to support her. Before leaving I turn back one more time and softly say, “Goodbye”. Wiping tears away from her eyes and now with a glint between them, Lucy replies, “You can say goodbye in the morning”.

As you would say in football, I had scored.
