August: A Great Start...
What is important whenever you join a club is to win your first few games to show that the club’s fans and your employers that they have made the right decision in welcoming you into their club. I feel that it is even more essential to win your first home game in some style, showing off what new approaches you have brought to the club already. The fans will want to see the new players, from the start of the season, making some kind of impact to already justify the transfer fee. You can imagine my delight at seeing Jerome Sinclair, who has signed on a permanent deal after being on loan at the end of the club, grabbing himself a brace in front of the Toon Army at St James’ Park against Wigan. This win really did signal out intent for the remainder of the month.
Our player of the month Alexandr Kokorin looks to be a very handy player to have leading the line. Despite Sinclair making an immediate impact, it is Kokorin who has started every game so far this season. He has paid back the faith I have showed in him by scoring four goals in the first four games. What is interesting is that he appears to be the only player who wants to score in the first half; the rest of the players don’t appear to put on their shooting boots on until half time. This could potentially be our downfall when it comes to playing against the bigger club; the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are not going to let us get away with only starting to get shots on target in the second half.
Despite having made an excellent start to the season, I think that the board of directors are going to be very hard to impress. The reason for their discontent at the moment is the lack of goals from set pieces. This unfortunately was an ethos I had to agree to in order to get the job at Newcastle but it is not an ethos I am a fan of. I prefer to score goals from open play and don’t want to have to rely on the centre backs coming forward to get their head on the ball to get a winner. Hopefully, if I am offered a chance to review my contract in the future, I will be able to remove that ethos as it could stop the board of directors liking my style of play.
