VfL Wolfsburg have hired Dieter Hecking as their new permanent head coach
VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed Dieter Hecking as their new head coach after both parties reached an agreement on Saturday. The 48-year-old, who penned a deal through to 2016, joins from fellow Bundesliga outfit 1. FC Nuremberg.
The Wolves parted ways with Felix Magath in may following a dismal end to the campaign, with U-23 coach Lorenz-Günther Köstner taking temporary charge until returning to his former post on Thursday.
Moving forward
Wolfsburg are expected to officially introduce Hecking as their new head coach in the coming days, but will be pleased to have filled the position so soon after the end of the season. The Wolves become the third Bundesliga club Hecking has taken charge of, following stints with Hannover 96 and Nuremberg.
The 48-year-old rescued der Club from the brink of relegation, taking over from Michael Oenning in December 2009 in that instance, before guiding the Franconian outfit to a sixth place finish the following season. Wolfsburg, currently sitting in 15th place and just seven points above the relegation zone, will be hoping that Hecking can work his magic again with their talented squad, which could potentially reignite the Wolves' European qualification ambitions.
