Youth Recruitment Players

It's that time of year, new young blood is coming through at Elland Road.

Chief football writer at the Yorkshire Evening Post, Phil Hay, has spent the past few days assessing the new youth recruitment scheme going on at Leeds United's training ground - Thorp Arch.

Leeds have a reputation for producing quality academy talent, the majority of the players from the Revie era - Leeds' most successful period to date were from the academy. Players such as Billy Bremner, Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer and Jack Charlton - who holds The Whites' most appearances record to this day with 629 appearances between 1952 and 1973. All them players featured in the 1972 F.A. Cup Final which Leeds won against Arsenal.

More recent products from the academy consist of Micah Richards, Gary Speed, David Batty, Aaron Lennon, Fabian Delph and Robert Snodgrass. All of them players have all played in the top-flight of English football. This season though, Neil Redfearn has heavily relied on the clubs youth system, which before the first team managerial role he was given in July 2014, was a system that he managed from under-18's to under-21's.

Sam Byram, Lewis Cook, Alex Mowatt, Charlie Taylor and Lewis Walters have all had an integral part in getting Leeds to top spot in the Championship so far this season. Kalvin Phillips and Chris Dawson have also contributed to the teams' efforts this season.

In the development squad, Leeds have a whole load of young players piling up ready for some first-team action. Players like Northern Ireland under-21 representative Robbie McDaid, Alex Purver, Jack Turnbull, Munya Mbanje and Piteu Crouz have all been waiting in the under-21's team and will be looking to prove themselves as first-team standard by the time next season comes around.

As mentioned above, striker Piteu Crouz has been firing in the goals for Scottish Premier League side Motherwell, bagging nine goals from fourteen starts since joining The Steelmen on loan in January, and the Scottish Premier League is a massive league for an 18 year old, with it requiring strength and physical aspects more than anything but Crouz has proven anyone can do it in that league.

Now, it's time for the new generation of future Leeds stars to be shown to the world. Leeds have had an extremely good intake of players this year and as long as they can reach their gifted potential, Leeds can prepare for an extremely good few years of success out of them. Nobody can 'poach' these players either, after agreeing professional terms by the time they turn 17 years old.

A twelve point gap between us and the eventual runners-up Wolves reasserted our dominance of this league, winning the title four games before the end of the season. The 4-1 loss to Bolton in May 2004 seems a distant memory now as we move up into the money.

Preparations Begin For 2015-16

Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn is well underway in preparing for life in the Premier League and the Europa League by adding a massive sixteen players to his current playing squad, whilst letting twelve leave Elland Road on a permanent basis, and ten more on loan. The net spend for this transfer window amounts to £21,850,000 in the black for The Whites, spending £24.15m on arrivals whilst earning £46m.

The majority of Redfearn's signings have been British, with just one foreign player - Swede John Guidetti - being included in the list of arrivals. Along with this is that the majority of departures have been foreign, or non-British however you may interpret. It seems as though the former Barnsley midfielder is looking to create a British dynasty, an approach which Don Revie took in Leeds' most successful period. Redfearn may be looking to emulate his idol Revie.

The headline additions to Elland Road have been Adam Forshaw, arriving for £7.25m from Wigan Athletic, West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell who arrives for £7m, Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley who joins on a free transfer, Kieran Gibbs who joins from Arsenal following his transfer listing at The Emirates and Q.P.R hardman Joey Barton who joins on a free transfer.

The most surprising addition, though, is Peterborough United poacher Luke James arriving for £5,000,000 from The Posh following a fall-out with manager Duncan Ferguson. The striker led Peterborough to promotion to the second tier of English football with 17 goals in 32 League One games last season following his arrival from Hartlepool. The price tag is definitely a heavy one for the Englishman, especially when signed in the Premier League for a club like Leeds. Although, it's not the first time something like this has proven successful for a Premier League side. In 2013, Crystal Palace snapped up Peterborough hitman Dwight Gayle for a fee of £5.5m, the striker was an instant hit with the Palace fans with his pace providing a great replacement for the departing Wilfried Zaha.

Onto departures, the main money-maker for The Whites was the sale of young Italian shot-stopper Marco Silvestri to West Ham United for a grand fee of £7,500,000. The 24-year-old featured in every single match of the 59-game season for Leeds. The Italian conceded 64 goals throughout the course of the season, but kept the most amount of clean sheets in the Championship last season - totalling 18 clean sheets. The £6,000,000 sales of Giuseppe Bellusci to Southampton and Luke Murphy to West Ham were also a key money maker.

The January signings were all sold off, Granddi N'Goyi left for £4.8m to Real Sociedad, Sol Bamba left for £3.4m to Tottenham Hostspur, Leonardo Pavoletti left for £1m to Parma and Dedryck Boyata left for £180k to Crystal Palace. Only ten of last seasons first-teamers remain at Elland Road following the mass exodus of players.

Neil Redfearn's men got off to a 100% win record during pre-season, just what they needed before their big kick-off at The Molineux as they begin the season in the Premier League for the first time since 2003/04. Over the course of the friendly schedule Leeds played in their first European competition since 2002. The Whites faced Estraklasa side Lechia Gdansk in the Europa League Qualifying Rounds. After defeating them 4-1 over two legs, Redfearn's men now face Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in the Play-Off round before the Group Stage part of the tournament.

We have a relaxed month ahead of us as we face reasonably equal teams in Crystal Palace and Wolves. Also, I cannot see us losing to Maccabi Haifa but we must show them respect as they are ranked in the same tournament so they must have some form of skill within their ranks. All but one of our games this month is televised which means lots of money for us.

Eastwood was brought in on the basis that he is a back-up to Jason Steele, and looking back at the games he played in pre-season we've got a very solid back-up keeper on our books. Since arriving on loan from Blackburn, he's kept a clean sheet in all three games he has featured in which is a bright start.
