Russian Takes Charge at Donetsk

Shakhtar Donetsk have announced that Russian Leonid Slutsky is the new manager of the club.
The 43 year old former goalkeeper moves from Russian side CSKA Moscow, at which he has been at since 2009.
Shakhtar released this statement:
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Leonid Slutsky as the new manager of Shakhtar Donetsk. We fully believe that he can replicate and succeed the success of Lucescu, and will be with the club for many years to come.”
Much criticism of Shakhtar owner Rinat Akhmetov, considering the current situation in Ukraine, but has said he has full backing of the board.
“I know the fans are mad, and it might seem crazy with what is going on at the moment. But I truly believe that he is the one that can lead the club forward to success, and I want every Shakhtar fan to back him from the beginning. I know he can repeat what Lucescu had done.”
Slutsky started his playing career with FC Zvezda Gorodishche, who our now dissolved, but only spent one year with them, making thirteen first team appearances, before having a career ending injury after falling from a tree.
He gained his first management job in 2000, where he managed FC Olimpia Volgograd, another dissolved team, for a season, before moving on to Football Club Uralan Elista, in which he oversaw the club pack it’s bags due to financial problems.
This lea him to another job, where he took over FC Moscow, which now have also folded. He lead them to 6th and 4th in the Russian Premier Division, and to runners up of the Russian Cup before being sacked and replaced by Oleh Blokhin, who was thought to be a contender for the Shakhtar job after a poor start to the season.
After a year out, he then took over Krylia Sovetov, in which he led them to 6th place in the Premier League. But he took the CSKA Moscow’s job offer to replace Juande Ramos in 2009.
Slutsky has subsequently lead CSKA to two league titles, two cups and two Super Cups, and the knock-out stages of the Champions League, a feat that Moscow had never achieved before. He lost out to Inter Milan in the quarter finals, who went on to win the competition.
