Despite winning the competition last season, Toulouse was predicted to finish fourth at the start of the season and have once again exceeded expectations. Even though Paris Saint-Germain claimed the Ligue 1 title this year, Toulouse managed to finish the season with the same points total as last season despite the squad undergoing a large number of changes.
Heading into next season, Toulouse are expected to be amongst the contenders for the Ligue 1 title with French media outlet L’Equipe predicting that they finish third. Expectations remain low in the UEFA Champions League despite the impressive performance from Toulouse last season with the side not expected to get out of the group stage.
In their first UEFA Champions League campaign since the 2007/08 season, Toulouse impressed by getting out of the group stage before being eliminated by Ajax in the Round of 16.
The highlight of the campaign was a 2-0 victory over Barcelona to see Toulouse finish second in the group and sending Barcelona to compete in the UEFA Europa League.
Repeating their feats achieved two seasons ago, Toulouse claimed the French Cup once again after a 4-3 victory over FC Lorient on the back of a tremendous performance from Cristian Pavon.
Once again, just like their last French Cup victory, Toulouse were the side to eliminate Paris Saint-Germain from the competition with a goal from Kelechi Iheanacho enough to see the tournament favourites knocked out of the competition.
Only a week before knocking Paris Saint-Germain out of the French Cup, Toulouse managed to defeat them in the Coupe de la Ligue to see the side eliminated from both competitions early on.
Toulouse went on to make the semi-final of the Coupe de la Ligue where they were eliminated by AS Monaco to have the competition remain the only French trophy that Dominique Arribage is yet to lift during his time at the club.
At the start of the season, Toulouse won the French Champions Trophy for the second year in a row by defeating French Cup winners AS Saint-Etienne in a penalty shoot-out.
Toulouse will compete for the French Champions Trophy again next season after winning the French Cup, going up against Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Winning the award for the third year in a row in what is arguably his best season at the club, Oscar Trejo has established himself as a true icon of the Toulouse Football Club. Continuing to control the attacking movements of Toulouse, Trejo was pivotal during their successful French Cup campaign and despite now being in his thirties, he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Trejo has now been at Toulouse for five seasons after joining the club from Sporting de Gijon during the 2013/14 season. He has now made 162 appearances for Le TFC and has scored 25 goals during his time at the club.
After displaying incredible form for Toulouse last season, Wissam Ben Yedder managed an impressive 34 goals in 48 games across all competitions, falling just short of his tally from the previous season. Ben Yedder was still the leading scorer in Ligue 1, finishing alongside Andres Renteria from Olympique Lyonnais on 26 goals but receiving the award after playing less games than Renteria.
After winning the European Golden Shoe last season, Ben Yedder finished second this season as the award was given to Jonathan Calleri of Bayern Leverkusen. Despite his form, Ben Yedder has not returned to the French national team with manager Rudi Garcia preferring Karim Benzema despite the Real Madrid striker only scoring 14 goals across all competitions this season.
In his first season with Toulouse, M’Baye Niang has finished the season with 18 assists, finishing level with William Matheus but coming out on top after playing less games than the Brazilian. Replacing Gabriel Obertan after he moved to Stade Rennais at the start of the season, Niang lived up to the task by not only providing more assists in a season than Obertan had during his time at the club but also scoring more goals.
Starting his career at Stade Malherbe Caen before moving to A.C. Milan, Niang had loan spells at four different clubs across Europe before moving back home to France to join Toulouse. French manager Rudi Garcia has brought Niang into his recently friendly squads but the 23-year-old has yet to make his debut for the national side.
In a tight contest, M’Baye Niang has beaten the likes of Julian Weigl, Dimitri Foulquier and Srdjan Babic who all performed tremendously to be named the signing of the season. Using his terrific physical attributes, Niang has managed to create a number of issues for Ligue 1 defenders throughout the season.
Arriving from A.C. Milan for €10.25 million, there was a lot of pressure on Niang to succeed after poor loan spells across Europe but his return home has seen him begin to live up to his potential. His great performances during the season have seen him become of interest to a number of clubs across Europe.
In a squad in which over half of the players were eligible for the award, M’Baye Niang has come away with the award after Cristian Pavon won it in the past two seasons. Toulouse have shown a clear intention to bring young players to the club through their activity in the transfer market, something which may see the club go from strength to strength should they be able to keep the players at the club.
Following along the lines of their youth policy, Toulouse have also begun to upgrade their youth and training facilities which are expected to be completed in November. Toulouse also currently have a strong youth squad which features players such as Hernan Lanoix and Marco Carbone who are being touted as future first team players.
