There will be celebrations in the streets in Toulouse after defeating Stade Rennais and claiming the French Cup for the second time in the history of the club.
On a wet evening, the match started out high paced and physical with Benjamin Andre from Stade Rennais FC and Toulouse captain Abel Aguilar receiving yellow cards. Both sides remained solid in defence throughout the first half, forcing both teams to attempt shots from outside the box. Towards the end of the first half, Stade Rennais FC defender Ludovic Baal received a yellow card for a poor challenge on Gabriel Obertan.
The second half saw the tense battle continue until the 58th minute saw Wissam Ben Yedder get on the end of a cross from William Matheus, place the ball past Stade Rennais goalkeeper Benoit Costil to give Toulouse the lead. After the goal, Toulouse took control of the match and dictated play, Stade Rennais began to get frustrated towards the end of the match which led to Ludovic Baal receiving a second yellow card. As the final whistle blew, the players celebrated as the Toulouse fans in the stands rejoiced.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our side, the boys have faced tough challenges throughout this tournament and overcome every single one.” said Toulouse captain Abel Aguilar speaking before receiving the French Cup. “This victory is for the fans, they have supported the club through the good times and the bad and they are the ones that truly deserve this victory.” he added.
The victory sees Toulouse qualify for the UEFA Europa League where they will enter the competition at the group stage. Fans will begin saving for fixtures in various locations around Europe while dreaming of endless possibilities.
