Liam Drury moves up from coaching the youngsters to world-class stars

  • Following Jurgen Klopp's departure, Liam Drury takes the Anfield reigns
  • Liverpool are expected to adapt to Drury's philosophy of playing the youngster
  • Drury made 15 appearances for England during his short career

Following the shock departure of charismatic German manager Jurgen Klopp this summer, academy coach Liam Drury has overcome the interview process to take charge of the famous English club. With 18 domestic league titles to their name, Liverpool will certainly be looking to return to the good times under their new up and coming manager, looking to restore Liverpool's pride within the top four.

Liverpool have struggled during recent times, failing to qualify for the Champions League and seeing their best players depart the club for pastures new. With a promising academy, Drury will look to use all his knowledge of the youth setup to set the Reds up for the future.

"Liverpool are s special club and I'm looking forward to beginning my project here" new manager Liam Drury stated, facing the full glare of the media. "I want to play the promising young players, to give them game-time and make sure that they reach their potential. We have a very able first-team squad, and I see a European finish as a realistic target for my first season".

When asked about the decision to appoint Drury as manager, chairman Tom Werner stated "Liam impressed us with the philosophy that he outlined to us. A young first-team squad, with the right blend of experience, appealed to us and I can see him being a success here at Anfield".

Coutinho: "Let's Hope Lovren Stays"

Bayern Munich are eyeing up a move for Liverpool's Dejan Lovren

  • Philippe Coutinho has given an interview to BBC Radio Merseyside
  • Coutinho has spoken about the potential Dejan Lovren move
  • Coutinho's future is also up in the air, with Tottenham interested

Just hours after the announcement that Liam Drury has been appointed as the Liverpool manager, star player Philippe Coutinho has undergone an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside. In the past hour, the Brazilian was asked about the potential move of team-mate Dejan Lovren to German giants Bayern Munich. However, Coutinho's future is still uncertain with the window open.

"With the new manager in charge, I think that Dejan Lovren should be given time to consider his options. He needs to see where he fits in with the new manager and his playing style, his new philosophy, before deciding whether he really wants to make a move. Dejan's a very good defender, but he won't be playing week in, week out at Bayern, whereas here, he's our best defender.

"I understand what Lovren is going through this moment in time. He's just come back from his holiday, there's a new manager in charge and already interest in him. He doesn't know where he fits in at Liverpool, I would imagine that he would be starting most games, but nothing is a certainty in football these days and it would just take one mistake for him to be frozen out".

"The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world. I've enjoyed playing here every week for the past four or five seasons. I've played alongside Lovren for a couple of years now, in the same team, and I know that I can always rely on him to do some good defensive work when I don't track back. Hopefully, he stays for the good of his career and makes the right choice".

Drury: "We're Remaining Ambitious"

http://i2.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article9601056.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/JS67631708.jpg
Liam Drury has stated that his Liverpool squad are aiming high this season

  • The new Reds manager has been speaking to the media for the first time
  • Liverpool are aiming for a Europa League spot this season
  • With a few more additions, there's no reason why Liverpool can't go further

A day after signing his first-ever deal as a professional manager, a one-year deal agreed with Premier League side Liverpool, young manager Liam Drury has been speaking to the media with his Liverpool squad set to take on the Liverpool U23s in a friendly, just a few hours later.

"This Liverpool squad is ambitious. I am delighted that I have inherited an ambitious squad who want to be the best they can be and succeed for this team. They know what the minimum bar is, but they want to hit that maximum bar. And why not? If they believe, they can achieve.

"I've told the players that the minimum expectation is to make it into the Europa League through league qualification" Drury continued. "But deep down, they all want to be playing in the Champions League and playing on Europe's biggest stage. We have the players who can do that".

"If we can get the right players through the door, particularly a goalkeeper and a stronger defence, then I think we could easily achieve more than what I've outlined to the team. I look forward to working with them over the next year and seeing what they can do at Anfield"/
