I had a draft for the September update, then I lost it all. It'll be up in a few days when I'm over losing it all
I was keen for us to get back on track in September, and with just three games to play during the whole month, I was hoping we'd take advantage of a more relaxed schedule. Back in the fold was Pablo Hernandez, Luke Ayling (for one game), Barry Douglas, Mehdi Zeffane and Jack Harrison, so we were well equipped coming off an international break, during which we went through triple sessions daily. Now unfortunately, I had drafted this update yesterday and lost the draft completely and with it went my match report notes that I was deleting along the way. So as my memory is a little cloudy on these matches now, instead of a match report I'll include my usual preview and summary that I tend to bookend the actual match reports with. So, without any further ado, let's get (back) into it...
Barnsley 0-2 Leeds United
Mads Andersen off 48
Helder Costa 57
Patrick Bamford 58
Leeds United 3-1 Derby County
Barry Douglas 26
Jack Marriott 64
Helder Costa 71,76
Charlton Athletic 1-2 Leeds United
Lyle Taylor 24
Helder Costa 25
Patrick Bamford (pen) 37
PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Who else? The man who shone even when we struggled for form last month has inspired this month's upturn in fortunes. Costa has now added goals to his game, netting four out of his last three, and there can be no doubt in my mind that he is, by some distance, the best player in our team at the moment. Absolutely unplayable on his day, he has been the main reason we've turned our fortunes around.
After three wins in a row, we have propelled ourselves from 18th up to 10th, just four points behind the playoffs and five behind automatic promotion. It goes to show just how open this league can be in the early stages, which is why our blip coming so early is such a huge advantage to us. As I mentioned in the previous update however, I wouldn't call a crisis on a winless run in August, so I won't be doing cartwheels yet over three straight wins in September. It is an achievement nonetheless, but we need to keep this momentum building through October now. The players' performances have got me Manager of the Month Award, although it is essential to stress how much that is down to the effort and application of the players.
That's all for now, apologies if it was brief but if I went and combed back through the games for play-by-play details, this update would probably never see the light of day. Hopefully I'll be back with a more familiar format for the next update (unless you guys prefer this format? Feel free to let me know) which should be out in the next couple of days or so.
