3 out of the 4 teams in European finals are Spanish

In what has been a terrible season for Atleti, Marcelino salvages something for them with his first European title (only took over in December)

Atlético Madrid win their 4th Europa League crown (2/4) in their 4th final appearance and record holders Sevilla lose in the final for the first time.

This match builds up for the big one in a few days and if it’s anything like this we are in for a treat!

2020-05-09 08:54#270348 Eoin97 : PSG have officially leveled up in France! What a crazy season! A few dramatic games on the final day of the domestic season.

There is no point anymore! They have destroyed the domestic season.
The Spanish dominance in Europe continues!
Spain are obviously keen on not being outdone by the English and the Premier League. May the debate as to which league is superior continue ;)

Krestovsky Stadium home of Zenit Saint Petersburg is the venue for the 2021 CL Final

Gary Lineker will be present coverage live from Saint Petersburg and will be joined by UEFA Champions League winners Owen Hargreaves, Steve McManaman, last year’s winner Fernandinho and finally Vincent Kompany, who will provide their expert analysis.

The holders Manchester City come into this game on the back of throwing away the PL to Liverpool. City got the better of them in the CL SF, but the downfall began from there.

Barcelona come into this after surrendering their 3 year grasp of La Liga in one of the best title races in many years. The slip up against Betis after the CL QF was enough, despite them winning their last 5 without conceding! They have only conceded 3 in their last 10 games, scoring 21.

When the line-ups are released there is the prospect of Lionel Messi making his long waited return to the team after 2 goals in a substitute appearance last time out!

Many expect this to be Pep Guardiola’s last game in charge in his longest reign at a club. In 5 years here he has won the Premier League 2x, FA Cup 2x, Carabao Cup 3x, Community Shield 2x and the clubs first Champions League and Super Cup!

A word from the managers –

Pep Guardiola – “It feels good to be here again after what we achieved last year. We must work harder this time if we want the title again because Barcelona are hungry, we saw how good they were this season and we must do everything asked of us to take the game to them.
They have a young coach who has done amazing things this season. We are here to do a job tonight and we are ready.

Borja Fornas – “The whole group is ready to leave everything out on the pitch. We have had lots of time together over the past few weeks to prepare in the necessary way for this one. They are a top team with Pep in charge and I’m excited to get underway!

It has been 6 years since Barcelona last held the European Cup, the 2nd longest wait they have had between titles (14years between first and 2nd) and in that time Real Madrid won it 3 times in a row, while Barça suffered humiliating defeats.

Hopefully for a bit longer yet

They have certainly had the upper hand over the past decade, but England is making the comback, slowly
FC Barcelona 4-3-1-2

Lionel Messi makes his return after missing 7 matches. Will he be the difference tonight!

Just 4 players remain in the XI from 2015, with Piqué surprisingly for many not starting.

Man C – 2020 season FINAL XI
Ederson, Cancelo(RB), Otamendi (AKA Flopamendi) (CB), Laporte(CB), Zinchenko(Lb), Fernandinho (CDM), De Bruy(Cm), D. Silva (CM), B. Silva(RW), Sterling (LW), Aguero (ST)

(10) Aguero (ST)

3 changes to the team from last season with Stones and Foden coming in for Flopamendi and David Silva and Rodri comes in for studio pundit and Real Madrid midfielder Fernandinho.

Fernandinho - Both sides are very strong. I played with this team last season and they work so hard. It's a shame what happened in PL but that will push them on to retain this title.

Gary Lineker - The return of Messi tonight, he wasn't going to miss this one was he?

Steve McManaman -
Of course not. We all know what he does for the players around him and I wouldn't be surprised if he was ready a few weeks ago but they were just saving him.

Gary Lineker - Well, the final is just 45 minutes away. We will be talking through the team after this break...

Darren Fletcher alongside Jermaine Jenas in commentary today

Ovidiu Haţegan – 40-year old Romanian referee with his first final.

20' Early stages and both teams are trying to make their mark. No team has made a real chance to speak of but possession is split.

Fletcher - 36’ Cucurella with the throw into Arthur, back to Cucurella with a first time cross. Messssiiii… GOAL!!!

Lionel Messi does it again he’s superhuman (Rob Palmer 23/4/2017 Real M 2-3 FCB)

It’s Messi, Lionel Messi does it again! (Rob Palmer 31/3/2018 Sevilla 2-2 FCB)

We have seen him do that in a final before 12 years and 2 days ago vs Man U!

He has said it’s one of his favourite goals many times and this may well have surpassed that. The Barcelona captain and genius has scored with Mendy on his shoulders!

Jenas - He doesn’t score headers! Unbelievable Darren.

Fletcher - 45’ On the stroke of HT Lenglet sends a long ball forward to Griezmann and Cancelo trips him. It’s a clear yellow and Barcelona are taking this game to City, they need to regroup.

Gary Lineker – Wow! That was one way to return eh. He doesn’t score headers. We were watching highlights before this game and that Man U header came up. I think he must have been watching it in the dressing room. Unbelievable header.

Vincent Kompany – He is the difference here; I don’t think City have been bad but there isn’t much you can do about that.

Steve McManaman – He’s one of the best we’ve seen with the ball at his feet it shouldn’t be possible scoring a goal like that.

Gary Lineker – Our reaction to the goals and first half analysis after this break…

2nd Half

Fletcher - 65’ Mendy down the left for City, looks to pass it inside but it’s a dreadful ball to de Jong and Foden is quick into the dutchman and it’s another yellow. 3rd of the night.

Sub 69' Jesus on for Aguero

Fletcher - 69’ Semedo down the right for Barca, with around 20 minutes to go. He gets past Sterling with ease and Rodri comes over to assist, but Sterling has clipped him and linesman flags. Exaclty what Barca need, City with cynical fouls. Ovidiu Haţegan (Ref) wants a word with Sterling now and gives him a yellow which hasn’t gone down well with Man City fans or Sterling himself. 50/50 for me, didn’t need to do it.

Jenas – It think it’s harsh, personally.

Fletcher - 70’ So, Messi stands over the ball at the far corner of the pitch. Sends the ball into the box towards Griezmann at the far post, saved, but it’s gone in… I think it hit off Cancelo. 2-0!!!

Jenas – What has happened here? It’s a lovely cross from Messi and what a save Ederson, but it’s in off Cancelo.
It has come from a needless fk that just gave Barcelona another opportunity to cause danger, they’re going to have to step it up now.

Sub - Foden off for Gundogan and Walker on for Cancelo

Fletcher - 77’ Mendy with the throw and Semedo is quickly on Sterling, you can see the pressing from Barcelona so high up is relentless. First booking for Barca.

Jenas - They seemed to have upped that intensity later on and they haven't made any subs yet!

Sub 79'Piqué on for Arthur, first change for Barca and it looks like they will be going to a back 5.

Sub 87'Suárez is going off for the former Liverpool man Coutinho, who spent last season on loan at Bayern.

Jenas – It hasn’t been a top Suárez performance, but they are 2-0 up with about 5 mins left so.

Fletcher - 88’ Corner late on for City. They have to get this right now. De Bruyne in but de Jong heads clear. Stones collects on the edge of the box and runs wide with it, past piqué and crosses it. Sterling is all alone at the back post… Left footed finish by Sterling. Surely, it’s offside there was no one near him!

VAR - GOAL. It didn’t take long, I think it’s Cuccurella playing him on and it’s a lifeline for Manchester City!

Jenas – VAR has gone against them in the past but it’s an east decision here. Game on… 2-1

Injury time - There will be 5 minute added on because of the last goal.

Sub 94'Dembélé will be the last change for Barcelona, coming on for Griezmann. His pace could cause problems if City push further forward.

Fletcher - 96’ de Jong gets it on the edge of the boxes and just smashes it clear. It’s played out to De Bruyne in the middle, he plays a one two with Bernardo Silva, its then passed out to Walker who tries to go on the outside of Dembélé…

That’s it. FCB are CL winners for the 6th time!

Jenas – They deserved it. A wonderful goal from Messi and then a bit of bad luck. But they controlled the game for long stretches.

Borja Fornas becomes the all-time youngest winning manager of the competition at 35 years 329 days

Beating José Villalonga Llorente, he won the European cup at 36 years and 184 days in 1956!

Pep Guardiola was the youngest CL winner for FCB at 38y and 129 days in 2009!

This title moves Messi and Piqué (1x Man U) to 5x winners of the competition, just 10 others have achieved this. Francisco Gento is still leading with 6, since 1966.

Borja Fornas - I was told about that record a few days ago but I couldn't think about it then. Now I can and it's is a good feeling to surpass such a long lasting thing.
We played really well and i'm sure people will be talking about Messi's return for years to come.
Enjoy it Culés! :)
Congratulations on bringing the Champions League back to Catalonia!
Superb! An iconic win for Barca and what an achievement for the man in charge! Incredible work, mate. :D
Big win, good to see you continue the Barca tradition!
ScottT, Jack and Justice - Thanks a lot guys! When they scored that late goal I was worried for a little while, but we got the job done. Upwards and onwards to next season and the TREBLE!!!

A few days later Barcelona announce their new Director of Football. It's a big summer for the Catalan club, with a new board coming in this summer!

Good new contract for a young exciting full back

Gerard Piqué - I felt it was the right time for me and the club to move away from my live. I have been considering it for a while and to end my stay at the highest level with the European trophy in my hands is magical!

This is only goodbye for now. I have plans to return to the club once I have finished playing, but for now my next adventure is at Valencia.

Thank you for these years of winning and happiness

Visca el Barça!
Visca Catalunya!

Borja Fornas - It's a sad time for the club. We knew this could happen but were hoping for him to reconsider. But, he has earnt our respect to do what he thinks best. You will be missed Gerard and good luck.

Bartomeu - He is a legend of this club and a leader in the most successful era of FCB.
There will always be a place for him here, but for now we wish him well for what's next for him :)
That's a surprise. I honestly thought Pique would remain at the club until he retired.
Undoubtedly a Barca legend. He will be missed.
de Ligt around 13 years younger has replaced Piqué in this team and i'm trying to reduce the wage bill as much as possible. Over 200k off it that was sat on the bench seems the right decision :)

It doesn't feel right even mentioning this trophy. It's just another money making scheme for the elite to feast.

All the FCB players where on holiday until a day before each map, just to show how much we care :)

Well done Bayern. Always nice to see Madrid lose.
