Well it certainly seems as if this Ireland team has figured out how to score goals under O'Shea, something they had struggled with before. A good Euro's despite the loss to England in which the scoreline didn't seem to match the performance. With the squad seeing a number of very young player blooded in and World Cup qualification secured, it could be exciting times ahead for the nation.

There has definitely been a lot of improvement and a lot of reasons to be excited moving forward! I really enjoy the visuals and the match day style write ups. Great story!

March 2022 Internationals

March brought with it two friendlies for the Republic of Ireland and John O'Shea made a number of changes to his squad. Kieran O'Hara (injury), Cyrus Christie (injury), Enda Stevens (Chris Wilder being a wanker) and Luca Connell dropped out of the squad.

In their place came Mark Travers, Ryan Manning, Danny McNamara and Jack Taylor. It was an opportunify for Danny McNamara to make his Ireland debut.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):

Troy Parrott continued his fine goal scoring form for club and country as he bagged a brace against Estonia. Otherwise, nothing exciting happened.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"Yes."

TheLFCFan, the goals have been flowing quite nicely! I'm hoping the young players can continue to develop into real top international stars.
pancetta15, thank you - I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Quite surprised by the result against Paraguay: I thought they'd put up more of a fight tbh. There's no doubt that the team has now found a rhythm, and with the squad being so young too, O'Shea is definitely working towards an era of potential glory if a few decisions go Ireland's way.

Good luck :D
1
O'Shea really putting in the effort in his post match! Two more great results and I agree with James, the future is looking bright!

The Republic of Ireland were handed, arguably, the most difficult group of the UEFA Nations League Division A. Ireland will face off against familiar opposition in Croatia, who they had beaten in last summer's European Championship group game in Dublin, as well as against footballing giants Germany and Portugal.

The winner of each group will progress to the semi finals of the competition, while the bottom-placed team in each group will be relegated to Division B. The Republic of Ireland entered this year's Division A tournament following a first-place finish in the Division B group back in 2020.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"It's an incredibly exciting group for us to be involved in. We've obviouisly got some very happy recent memories against Croatia, and we'll never forget our win over Germany in the Euro 2016 qualification campaign.

We know we're expected to finish bottom of our group. But we know we're capable of beating anybody when we're right at it. We'll give it our best shot and see where we end up at the end of it."

J_ames, I think recent results have shown that the promising players are beginning to fulfil some of their potential and put in some impressive games.
TheLFCFan, yes
A tough group but one that will really show where this team is. We have seen some exciting signs, but here will be the real tests outside of the major tournaments!

June 2022 Internationals

John O'Shea made a number of defensive changes to his squad for June's international fixtures against Germany and Portugal. Mark Travers, Jimmy Dunne, Ryan Manning and Danny McNamara were all left out this time around as Kieran O'Hara, Eoghan O'Connell, Dara O'Shea and Enda Stevens all returned to the squad.

Subs Used: K Volland (74'), D Selke (75'), L Waldschmidt (79')
Manager: Christian Streich

It was a game where the score line did not tell the full picture. While Germany dominated most of the ball, Ireland created all the chances in the first half. In fact - Ireland hit the woodwork an incredible FOUR times in the first half. Visibly disheartened heading into the second half, Germany tore them to pieces. Once Sané's first goal went in, the floodgates opened. Werner scored from the spot, Gnabry got in on the act and Sané added another to secure a comprehensive 4-0 victory for the visitors. Not the best of starts to the Nations League campaign for Ireland.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"The score line was certainly harsh. Germany deserved to win - they took their chances - but the score line is not fair on our performance. We were outstanding for most of the game and created a lot in the first half. Unluckily for us, we hit the bar many times and couldn't get the ball that few inches underneath it.

Once Germany got the first, they found that extra bit of energy that you get after a goal. We were tired and caught napping at times and they went on to score a few more. We'll have to take it on the chin and learn from the goals we conceded.

We're disappointed with the result but the performance wasn't a million miles away from where we wanted it to be, for most of the game anyway."

Manager: John O'Shea

The Republic of Ireland were up against it once again and were completely outgunned by an in-form Portugal. Joao Cancelo opened the scoring in the second minute with a thunderbolt from range but Callum Robinson momentarily levelled the score for Ireland. A Leao goal for Portugal was cancelled out by a Bruno Fernandes own goal but the Man Utd midfielder made amends by putting Portugal back in front from the penalty spot. Goals from Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix closed out a 5-2 victory for Portugal.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"It wasn't our best performance ever today. We tried to go toe-to-toe with Portugal and got outgunned. We scored twice, which is a great achievement, but we let them in too easily and the five goals conceded is a slap on the cheek. We need to defend better than this going forward."

UEFA Nations League Division A Group D
Two heavy defeats left the Republic of Ireland last with a poor goal difference. Croatia also scored 0 points but conceded significantly less. Relegation appeared to be between the two bottom sides. Could the Irish avoid the drop?

The Republic of Ireland were gifted with their group draw for the 2022 FIFA World Cup later this year. Having been placed into Pot 3, the Irish were in danger of finding themselves in a tough group but were gifted with their selection. Ireland will face a challenging opponent in fellow Europeans Belgium but will be much-fancied in their games against New Zealand and the USA.

Ireland will kick off their group campaign against USA on 24th November, before playing New Zealand on the 28th November. Ireland's final group game will be against Belgium on 2nd December, where they will likely find out if they progress to the knockout rounds. The top two in each group will move on to the Second Round (last sixteen). Ireland and Belgium are expected to make up the top two in their group in Qatar.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"It's an exciting draw for us. As a nation, we've got great connections with the Americans, and are very friendly with New Zealand and Belgium. They've all got some magnificent players, Belgium obviously more so, and will give us some very exciting games. Hopefully we can do our nation proud and fight for progression to the knockout rounds, but nothing's guaranteed so we will need to work hard."

Well, you would certainly fancy yourselves against the USA and New Zealand. That is a much better group than the Nations League and will give a lot of hope to O'Shea and the team. Group C looks particularly interesting, especially if Australia have pumped out the quality of regens they have in my save.

September 2022 Internationals

With the 2022 World Cup on the horizon, John O'Shea had a task to keep his Republic of Ireland squad focused for a UEFA Nations League Division A campaign which had started in the worst possible way. Following heavy defeats to Germany and Portugal, O'Shea made three changes to his squad. Kieran O'Hara, Dara O'Shea and Jack Taylor were left out with Mark Travers, Darragh Lenihan and Luca Connell replacing them.

Republic of Ireland (3-4-1-2): M Travers ; N Collins, J Egan, D Lenihan; M Doherty, J Knight (71') , C Hourihane, D Cirkin; C Ronan (58'); A Connolly, C Robinson (71')
Subs Used: D Crowley (58'), L Connell (71'), T Parrott (71')
Manager: John O'Shea

It was a very rugged fixture and one where the Republic of Ireland will be thankful of goalkeeper Mark Travers. The recalled shot stopper, who had been in incredible form for Bournemouth so far this season, saved 13 shots and dealth with crosses very well throughout the game. A tough game for the Irish, but an invaluable point against tough opposition.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"We probably got away with one today and have a lot to thank Travers for. We weren't great going forward and it just wasn't clicking for us on the ball. Croatia were fantastic and put on a good show, and maybe deserved the win.

Listen, there's a reason teams have goalkeepers, at the end of the day. Even the best teams in the world have goalkeepers, so it shouldn't be a surprise that a goalkeeper saves shots. We're delighted with Travers' performances for Bournemouth and that's why he started today. He helped get us our first point of the group and it is something we can build on now."

Republic of Ireland vs Portugal

Subs Used: F Trincao (76'), P Goncalves (76'), S Oliveira (81')
Manager: José Mourinho

Rafael Leao's first-half goal was enough to separate the two sides in an entertaining game in Dublin. Both sides created chances throughout the game but Portugal created the better chances. Bruno Fernandes ran the show for Portugal and his curled cross found Leao free inside the six yard box to tap in. Another defeat for Ireland.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"We played an incredibly good team today and were very close to getting a result. It's tough to lose another game but we just need to pick ourselves up and try again next month. We've still got a chance to stay in this division."

UEFA Nations League Division A Group D
Despite getting their first point of the tournament, Ireland remained in last place in their group, albeit on goal difference. Their faith will be determined in next month's final games, and the Irish will know they will stay in Division A if they beat Croatia in their final game of the tournament.

TheLFCFan, indeed! Should be a cakewalk!
Home game against Croatia is going to be massive then! Travers performance in the first game against them could become even more important if you do manage to claim that victory.

October 2022 Internationals

There was just one forced change in the Republic of Ireland squad as the injured Eoghan O'Connell dropped out for Jimmy Dunne. Otherwise, manager John O'Shea named an unchanged squad for two crunch Nations League fixtures.

It was an absolute thriller in Berlin between Germany and the Republic of Ireland. The visitors took the lead three times through Dennis Cirkin, Darragh Lenihan and Aaron Connolly but Germany found replies each time through Kai Havertz, Jan Thielmann and a Darragh Lenihan own-goal. Timo Werner came off the bench to score the winner for Germany in a game that Ireland probably deserved a point from.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"I don't know how to react to this game. We were brilliant and scored three incredible goals but we were still outscored! I can't fault the players today - they played their hearts out and did everything they could to try get a result.

We have a big game now against Croatia. If we win, we stay in the division. If we don't win, we go down."

The Republic of Ireland needed a big performance to stay in Division A, and they delivered when it mattered. Two first-half goals from Aaron Connolly gave the Irish hope and Adam Idah and Matt Doherty both scored late on to secure the all-important victory for Ireland, despite Rebic's brace for the visitors. The result secured safety for Ireland and condemned Croatia to relegation to Division B.

John O'Shea (ROI Manager):
"It was a massive performance from the lads and they showed the fighting spirit that we all knew they had. Four brilliant goals and a very good, honest performance. We showed what we can do at our best and hopefully we can see more of the same going forward."

UEFA Nations League Division A Group D
Ireland's last game win was enough to secure third place, behind Germany and Portugal, and avoid relegation. Croatia crashed out, despite a solid draw against Portugal in GW5, which proved a major upset in international football.

Great work! I think those two games perhaps show the changes that O'Shea has bought since taking charge, just simply Ireland now have the ability to score goals. Good job in staying up!
