World Cup 2022

The summer of 2022 was not only a big year for people in Inca with the new stadium just a few weeks from opening day but also for the rest of the world who were preparing for a football fiesta.
32 countries were getting ready for the World Cup to be played in Qatar. No C.D. Constància player were selected to represent their country in the upcoming tournament.

The group stages had a few surprises and some major disappointments.
The host nation Qatar had a horrible tournament. In the opening match the team came away with a respectable 0-2 defeat to Peru but in the next game they ran inn to a horrible 0-5 trashing by 56th ranked team in the world Costa Rica and that was followed by another 1-5 loss to Austria. The host nation was out of the dance before the party had even begun.

Holland failed to win over Serbia in group F and was sent home early. It went even worse for Belgium who didn't manage a single win in a soft group C with Mexico, Russian and the Ivory Coast. The talented team also had to travel home before the fun began.
The biggest disappointment in the group stage was still an Italy team who finished behind both Switzerland and South Korea and was eliminated early.

Another team that didn't make the first cut was 2014 World Champions Cameroun who finished last in group H after just scoring a single goal and failing to win a game .

Louis O. : Some interesting results in there :P

And that is without England and Germany even qualified.

Round of 16

The first knockout round didn't see a lot of surprises. It was a minor surprise that Costa Rica got past Switzerland and that defending champions Spain had so much trouble and needed penalties to dispose of Ukraine.

The big performance in the first knockout round came from Austrian striker Christopher Bartsch. The striker from Southampton scored four of his teams five goals in the 5-3 win over South Korea.

That was just one goal away from the World Cup record held by Russian Oleg Salenko who scored 5 !! goals in a 1994 win over Cameroon.

Good to see Brazil progressing, and Neymar scoring a couple, too. Nice simple update, is this story going for a little longer in the FM14 Section?
Hmm, besides the disappointment of Australia not featuring in the World Cup, all the results seem to be alright, especially England not making it. Of course Fierro scored.

Neymar has been with Man U for the entirety of this save. He has been good but not great.

I will check Australia for you later.

Don’t sleep on FM20 wonderkid Carlos Fierro from Mexico. He is with Juventus and have had some quality performances in the group stage already .
Inspirational that this story is still continuing as it is one of my favourites! Great work getting in to Europe and creating a squad from what you started with. Some very good signings too through the season and great development there with a nail biting win at the end

Quarter-finals

In the round of 8 it was all about the clash of the two football giants Brazil and Spain.
With Spain only finishing second in the group stage after failing to beat USA, they now suddenly found themselves head to head with Brazil already in the quarterfinals.
Neymar scored his fifth goal of the tournament early in the first half and the “Canarinhos” then dropped in to their well known formation with two deep lying controlling midfielders. Spain struggled to find openings and just before the halftime break Brazil added a second goal when Real Madrid midfielder Luiz Magno finished off a brilliantly executed counterattack.
Spain tried to come back in the second half but they lacked creativity in the midfield and never got close.

In the other games Mexico once again scrapped bye with a narrow win. This time they needed penalties to defeat surprise team Costa Rica.

Argentina had an easy day in the office when they ended the run of Austria. A red card for Austria after an hours play made it easy for Real Madrid super striker Lucas Ocampos who scored two of the team's four goals.

In the last game Serbia came out with guns blazing and took the early lead after just four minutes of play. The lead only lasted four minutes before Portugal equalized. Portugal scored again twenty minutes later and Serbia never got back in the game. It was all over after 79 minutes when the Portuguese added a third.

Yes, go Brazil! :D Hopefully they can go and win it. Nice update again, interesting to see Costa Rica still in the game though :P
Unfortunate that the U.S. didn't do so well this time around, but congratulations on qualifying for Europa in that exciting final game! :D

Brazil will have to go thru Argentina just to get to the final. Coming up next..

USA were unlucky with a tough group with Portugal, Spain and Cameroon.

Now we “just” need to win the play-inn game to qualify for the group stage.

Semifinals

And just like that we were down to four teams.

The first semi final was between Portugal and Mexico. El Tricolor got off to the best possible start when Jesus López scores after just three minutes of play. In the second half its Portugal who gets off to a great start when they equalize after just three minutes.
Twenty minutes before full time the game is decided when Carlos Fierro scores his 8th* goal in the tournament and secures the first ever appearance for Mexico in the world Cup finals.

* I forgot to mention earlier that Carlos Fierro scored four goals in the teams 5-1 thrashing of the Ivory Coast in the group stage.

In the other game it was the two South American rivals Brazil and Argentina going head to head.
Brazil showed no fatigue and were up by two goals before the clock showed thirty minutes. The goals was scored by the AML Paulo, who Manchester United had bought from São Paulo a year earlier for €42M and by Neymar again (his fifth goal of the tournament). Argentina clawed on goal back in the first half injury time.

In the second half with a Lionel Messi still left on the sideline, Argentina tried to get the equalizer. But with little creativity in the midfield it was easy for Brazil to defend and the victory was never in doubt.

Brazil had made it to their 8th World Cup final while Messi finished the tournament without playing a single minute. That after scoring 18 goals and 15 assists with a 7.52 AvR for FC Barcelona during the season it was a sad goodbye to international football for one of the worlds best players ever.
