The Contract
The time had come. I was about to join one of the biggest Mexican teams in football, and I was just a contract away. But I still didn't have an agent. I was 16-year-old sorting out my own contract which could change my life.
I didn't expect much. Firstly, for being at a big club, taking a small role, and secondly, because of my age. At the moment I only want a youth contract, as I would still be open to moves at this point. I met with the chairman and the manager, to discuss my possible feature. After discussion over burritos and soft drinks, the first offer came in.
£5 per week in a deal lasting until 30th June 2013.
This was an okay offer, especially for a first one, but I want too more things. A bit more money, although not necessary, but would also like a longer lasting contract, so I could prove myself. Six months just wasn't enough. After explaining the reasons, the chairman and manager came in with a second offer.
£9 per week in a deal lasting until 30th June 2014.
This was more like it. Nearly double the wage, but most importantly, an extra year. In that way I could become a success, playing for the club often. This was my chance. I couldn't resist. If I had an agent it could have been a different, and maybe better offer, but I couldn't turn this down. I immediately accepted, and realised, I'm a Monterrey player!
