Belgium
2012
The qualifying for the 2014 World Cup started out great for Belgium with a 4-0 win early in September at home in front of close to 27.000 people against a helpless Wales. It was a game were all the stars of the Belgium golden generation showed up on the main stage. Vincent Kompany, Fellaini, Eden Hazard and Jelle Vossen all got on the score sheet the night.
But then it got tougher. They played very entertaining games against both Serbia (2-2) and Scotland (3-3) but ended up dropping vital points in both games. The year did end on a high note for Belgium with a win over Macedonia.
8 points for four games was good but not great and the team had a lot of work to do if they wanted to go to Brazil.
For the club teams the year was brutal. Anderlecht made it to the Champions League with a win over Partizan in the deciding qualifying game. A win and a draw against Danish FC Nordsjæland and losses to Schalke 04 and Barcelona was the result. It didn’t go much better in the Europa League were the lost 2-7 over two games to Sporting Lisboa. No other Belgian team even made the group stage.
2013
2013 started with a 5-0 win on the road in a friendly game against Finland. But a draw at home against Croatia and a horrible loss in Wales stopped the momentum in the World Cup qualifying. Win in friendlies against Denmark and Malta during the summer was followed by wins over Serbian and Macedonia. Again the momentum was stopped, this time with a 2-2 draw against Scotland.
Before the last group game Croatia had 18 points followed by Belgium with 16 and Serbia with 16. In a must win game in Croatia in late October Belgium folded like a cheap pocketknife. The 0-3 result combined with a Serbia win in Macedonia propelled them all the way down to 3rd place in the group and out of the Brazil World Cup before it was even begun.
Anderlecht had a little more luck in the Champions League this season but still finished a long way behind Juventus and Schalke04 in the first two spots. The return of the more then €10mil they used in the transfer market before the season was minimal.
Both Genk and Club Brugge made the Europa League. Genk surprised a lot of people by knocking PSV out in the group stage but then fell in the first round to HSV after penalties. Anderlecht was unlucky with the draw and was once again eliminated in the first knockout round after a clear loss to Napoli.
