Only ever works (I find) if they are interested in one of your players.
I did Marton Fulop + 10 mil for Jonny Evans, I think Fulop was valued at about 4 mil at the time and Evans must've been at least 10 mil, so in the end it worked out for me.
Considering if I had tried to buy him straight out it woulda cost at least 18 mil or something like that.

yeah it all depends if the other club is interested in any of your players. I recently did a deal for my arsenal side where i got in Gareth bale in a straight swap for jay emmanual Thomas, who is some youngster in my squad who was not very good..

on my Wolfsburg save i managed to get Ath. Madrid to agree to swap Ujfalusi for £2m and Ricardo Costa but Ujfalusi wouldnt sign a contract with me! Would have been a massive massive gain for me! On 09 i got Pepe for Thiago Silva (AC Milan) and £10m worked out to be pretty much the same in the end! Was a good deal then Juve brought Thiago for 28m and i wasnt happy!
Im on an AC save now and i got Otamendi when he was young now he wants out (because hes bored) and Real Madrid want him but they wont give me Ramos so they are not having him!
