I have been playing FM for many years and seen that this appears on the preferred moves...and never given it much thought...but it would be nice to know what it means and how it benefits the players...?
Moving into the channels means moving out wide - therefore creating space/chances or supporting other team mates out wide
Does that mean that when for example a right attacking midfielder goes to the byeline and then crosses to the far post...the left attacking midfielder will run in to meet the cross and put it away...?

The channels are the wings
if your striker has move into channels as a preferred move, i always find its best to encourage him to take a T. Henry style of play. if he's right footed set him to the left sided striker and then in the player instruction set to cut inside. they make the run into space then cut inside and take on the last man.

striker moves into the channels (forward red dots)
they receive the ball (yellow) which is passed into the channel.
the instruction to 'cut inside' is then activated and they providing positioning of the defender and their skill can cut in off the wing.
a straight punt up the middle makes any of those moves completely redundant so it doesn't matter.
Move into channels basically means that the player won't stick to either side of the pitch (Hug touchline/stick to side) or try to cut inside, BUT will look for a space ahead where he can run with or without the ball (hence, channel). This wide play is good for strikers, whereas cut inside is for inside forwards and hug touchline is for wingers, wing backs and attacking full backs.
It is true that players moving into channels generally move to wide areas but this is just because front of goal is more crowded.
Preferred move just means that your player will be better at doing these. It won't do so unless you select the wide play option accordingly.
