When The Saints Go Marching In
Southampton FC. A team who have had their fair share of ups and downs in recent years. Whilst they were never a top team in the Premier League, it was still surprising to see them drop two divisions into League One. Following their first relegation (to the Championship) Southampton had a few seasons where they flirted with a promotion to get themselves back into the top flight. However, financial troubles played a huge part in their relegation to League One. In their first season in the division, they were docked ten points after they were placed in administration. However, they still managed a very respectable 7th place finish.
The next season began their road to recovery. They earned promotion back to the Championship after a very strong season. Saints fans' dreams came true the following season, when Southampton managed to earn a second promotion in as many seasons - ensuring their return to the Premier League. Last season saw them finish 14th, but many were impressed by their style of play. Manager Nigel Adkins was sacked and replaced by Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino halfway through the season. Through their bad times, they managed to produce some fantastic youth talents. Arsenal team-mates Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are some great examples of the talent produced, but the worlds' most expensive player Gareth Bale, was also brought through the Southampton youth ranks. Youngsters James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw, who have started to receive media attention for their play, also seem to have an exciting future in football.
The club are also back on a sound financial footing, and have been able to splurge some cash on a few players, such as Uruguayan Gastón Ramírez, who was bought for around £12 million. Fans of the club are optimistic about the upcoming season, but will Pochettino be the man to fulfil the ambitions?
