I thought I would see if Genie Scout works in Linux Mint with Wine and it seems to work fine with only one problem. It can't tell whether the game is running or not.

If the was a option in the Options screen to disable it checking that the games is running then you could cater for everyone who uses Linux without bothering to alter the game in any manner. Something like:

[x] Disable checking for a running game (Linux users only)

The game's options screen:

The error:

All one needs to do is install Wine, download, and extract like normal, open Genie with Wine and change the directories to:

User data directory: /home/[username]/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2014/shortlists
Save Games Directory: /home/[username]/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2014/games
Shortlist Directory: /home/[username]/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2014/shortlists

Obviously replace [username] with your username (duhhhhhhh). Anyway, I hope some of that helps.

So close to FM Genie gold on Linux...
Is there anyone who could do a native port or at least give some options so that we could run it on wine? It would take hardly any work at all
Did anyone get this working?

No-one bothered to get back to me. All that needs to be done is to disable some of the checks and then you can point it to the save game directories because all the rest is done in the steam directories.
If they would open source an old version then we could alter it ourselves and give it back to them but they seem rather ignorant to that fact.
I would like to +1 this as I'm running on Mint myself.
As said up here, this is something really frustrating, since wine is making this happen but the last modification prevent the software to work on linux... Developers don't need to work to make this work on linux, it could be already running with WINE software for linux...

I don't understand how exactly it works. I mean if it can't load the savegame, it just doesn't work. Sure you can open the program but that's the easy part.

Did you try running FM14 with WINE too? If I can recall someone tried to run both FM14 and GS14 through Wine on Mac and it worked, so possibly this can work on Linux too?

Eugene has stated multiple times he won't go open source. So there's no point requesting that again. On his latest interview for GS11 (Genie Scout 11 and Eugene), he said:

Eugene:
I don't really believe that working in a team will be more efficient in this case. Actually, I'm sure this project will die if the number of responsible persons for the its development will be more than one. From my experience, projects like this cannot successfully exist in a team without financing. And as long as I have an inspiration and feeling confident of supporting the project, I'm not going to make it public.
If I feel that I'm not able anymore, I'll delegate this project to someone else. But I hope it won't be anytime soon =)

If you remember, Michael Nygreen's projects were open source for years, but how many utilities were created based on his sources? I think that there are very few people like littleblue or BraCa that are completely dedicated to their projects and who can sacrifice a huge part of own private life.
