In a bizarre move, the F.P.F. has installed 47 year-old Vitor Paneira as the new manager of the national team. Paneira most recently managed second-division Tondela C.D..
"We felt that Vitor will bring a certain creative flair to the squad, one which was sorely lacking under the previous manager," commented F.P.F. President Fernando Gomes.
The previous manager, of course, was Paulo Bento. The former national team star resigned from his position last week amidst rumors that the F.P.F. was meddling in the team's affairs too much for his liking.
"The contract termination with Paulo was mutual," said Gomes.
As for Paneira, he has an impressive on-field resume which includes over 200 matches for Benfica, and 44 appearances for the Portuguese national team.
However from a managerial standpoint, he's relatively inexperienced, never having managed above the Second Division in Portugal.
"I am looking forward to the challenge, and I feel our team will be able to make some noise in Rio," beamed a clearly-ecstatic Paneira at yesterday's press conference.
Paneira's first test will come in mid-August, when Portugal will travel to hostile Tehran for a match with Iran. Their fate regarding the 2014 World Cup in Rio will be decided in the span of four days in early September, when his squad face Russia and Northern Ireland.
