Portugal Hire Relative Newcomer
Vitor Paneira is the new man in charge

In a bizarre move, the F.P.F. has installed 47 year-old Vitor Paneira as the new manager of the national team. Paneira most recently managed second-division Tondela C.D..

"We felt that Vitor will bring a certain creative flair to the squad, one which was sorely lacking under the previous manager," commented F.P.F. President Fernando Gomes.

The previous manager, of course, was Paulo Bento. The former national team star resigned from his position last week amidst rumors that the F.P.F. was meddling in the team's affairs too much for his liking.

"The contract termination with Paulo was mutual," said Gomes.

As for Paneira, he has an impressive on-field resume which includes over 200 matches for Benfica, and 44 appearances for the Portuguese national team.

However from a managerial standpoint, he's relatively inexperienced, never having managed above the Second Division in Portugal.

"I am looking forward to the challenge, and I feel our team will be able to make some noise in Rio," beamed a clearly-ecstatic Paneira at yesterday's press conference.

Paneira's first test will come in mid-August, when Portugal will travel to hostile Tehran for a match with Iran. Their fate regarding the 2014 World Cup in Rio will be decided in the span of four days in early September, when his squad face Russia and Northern Ireland.
Boa sorte :)

Vitor Paneira: "I've made a few tactical and personnel changes to what Paulo had in place before, but I feel it's for the better. Eduardo is, in my opinion, hands-down the best goalkeeper in the squad. That's not a potshot at Rui Patricio, but I feel as though Eduardo deserves a shot. As for the anchor position of defensive mid, we're scouting right now for a long-term solution, but youngster William Carvalho will start there indefinitely. Thanks."

CM - Nekounam (Sevilla - ESP)
RM - Dejagah (Fulham - ENG)
CAM - Masoud (Las Palmas - ESP2)
ST - Jafari (Domestic)

On paper, this looks like a mismatch, however it could turn out very differently!

The stadium is packed to capacity, and I must say I've seen a fair share of knockoff Ronaldo jerseys!

Our Swedish referee blows his whistle, and we're underway here in Tehran!

13th - There's a great ball through by Ghoochannejhad, he's found Jafari at the edge of the box...and he gets hauled down by Moutinho! That will be a free kick from a dangerous position here for the hosts! Dejagah, the Fulham man, steps up to take it...and he blazes it over the bar! He's got to do better than that!

15th - Here's Meireles with it at midfield, now rushing into the Iranian half with pace, here's Raul Meireles. Dangles his way to the far side, now delivers a high cross...AND IT'S THERE! Cristiano Ronaldo puts the visitors up one-nil with a fantastic header! 1-0 Portugal

28th - Now Ronaldo forces a turnover by Nazari, Ronaldo streaks in alone on goal, and HE'S CHIPPED IT IN!!! Off the bottom of the crossbar and in, 2-nil to the visitors! 2-0 Portugal

30th - Here come Portugal yet again, as they've forced a corner. Quaresma delivers it, it pings around in the six yard box...And it's IN! Hugo Almeida, johnny-on-the-spot, and it's THREE-NIL Portugal! 3-0 Portugal

45+3 - The referee puts the whistle to his lips and signals halftime. What a dominant performance by the visitors from Portugal in the first half! Both teams look to be making mass changes at halftime.

64th - Rahimi, passes it ahead for Masoud, he streaks past Alves, only Pepe to beat...AND HE'S HAULED DOWN BY PEPE! Magnus Eriksson reaching for a card here...it's a yellow for Pepe and a freekick in a dangerous spot for Iran! Dejagah lines it up, runs up, and blasts it into the wall! Another wasted opportunity!

66th - Quaresma picks up the loose ball deep in Iran territory, tries to cut inside, and GETS TAKEN DOWN BY NAZERI! It's a yellow card for Nazeri, and Joao Moutinho stands over the freekick, 25 yards out. He runs up, and boots the ball 20 feet wide. Not even close.

67th - This game is really picking up an aggressive tone, as Nekounam gets shoved roughly from behind by substitute Helder Postiga. Third yellow card in four minutes here in Tehran!

92nd - The referee blows for full-time, and that does it from Tehran. 3-nil Portugal leave winners, as the match went according to plan!

3-0 Iran (A)
- Cristiano Ronaldo 18', 29'
- Hugo Almeida 31'

A good first win! :)
Unlucky Daniel Davari :P

Paneira Confident Ahead of Final Qualifiers

http://www.abola.pt/img/fotos/tondela/vitorpaneira1.jpg

"We are an excellent footballing nation, and I don't think anyone can dispute that. Obviously playing in Russia will be a difficult task, but I'm very confident that the lads are up and ready for this match. A single point and we clinch," smiled Portugal boss Vitor Paneira.

Portugal left for Russia this morning, heading to the Olympic Stadium in Moscow where they will face a Russian team with little to play for.

Entering the final two qualifying matches, Portugal sit comfortably ahead of Russia, five points ahead of them. Even if the seleccao lose outright in Moscow, they would need to lose at Northern Ireland in a week's time to give Russia the slightest chance to overtake them for first-place in Group 6.

"We know where we stand, we've put ourselves in a great position, and we would like to wrap things up in three days' time in Moscow. Preferably with a victory, but a draw will do," said Paneira.

It is unclear who will get the start at defensive mid, as it has been a hot conversation piece. William Carvalho, Bruno Peireirinha, and even Pepe have all been considered for what Paneira describes as a, "Pivotal," position.

The game will be broadcast live on RTP on the 6th.
Pick William Carvalho to start!!! :P
Unfortunately I had a big, elaborate matchday post ready to go for the big match in Russia, which was lost into the annals of time (aka I accidentally deleted it instead of hitting reply).

A terrible mistake on my part, but here is how the game went:

Sept. 6th, '13

(Identical Starting XI as that against Iran, except William Carvalho started in place of Goncalo at CDM)

Pavlyuchenko got the hosts on the board, totally against the run of play, in the 15th minute when he headed home from an Arshavin cross.

Nani equalized with a powerful header just five minutes later, and we gradually took control of the match.

I brought on youngster Nelson Oliveira at halftime, in place of the useless Hugo Almeida. Oliveira managed to pot one into an empty net after Cristiano Ronaldo set him up in the 58th, and we had the lead.

Disaster struck in the 84th (alright, that's a slight exaggeration as we only needed a draw), when Arshavin scored an impressive freekick from 25 yards out.

Here are manager Paneira's thoughts on the draw:

* Closed down Russia well (only four shots against)
* We weren't very efficient (two goals on 13 shots on target)
* Ruben looked useless after he came on as a sub for Coentrao, and was responsible for the 2nd goal.
* Nelson Oliveira looks like he could be a legitimate striker at the international level!

To speed up the process, I will only post the results for the last qualifier (@ N. Ireland) and the three friendlies we have scheduled between now and Rio!
Sept. 10th/'13 - N. Ireland (A)
1-0
- H. Postiga (85')

An unremarkable match with absolutely no meaning, we were embarrassingly outplayed by the Northern Irish for most of the match, however their clunky strikers couldn't finish any of their multitude of chances. Postiga buried Nani's rebound late in the match to seal the three points, and ensure our undefeated qualifying record.

We finished qualifying with eight wins and two draws (both draws coming against Russia).

UEFA Play-Off Matchups

Belgium v. Slovenia
Greece v. Denmark
Spain v. Russia
Ukraine v. Turkey

That's right, Spain is in a playoff...
A good win against Northern Ireland, I'm liking this story keep up the good work :D
Portugal desperately need a striker
2014-01-05 23:26#153151 P-KIDDY : Portugal desperately need a striker

In a test save I did with Portugal, Nelson Oliveira developed into one of the top five strikers in the world! I'm hoping he can replicate that on this save...

Almeida and Postiga are both completely useless.
Going strong, keep it up :)
