CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Charlton Athletic Football Club is an English football club based in Charlton in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London. They currently play in the Football League Championship.

The club was founded on 9 June 1905. A number of youth clubs in the south east London area, including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission, combined to form Charlton Athletic. The club play at The Valley in Charlton, where they have played since 1919, apart from one year in Catford, during 1923–24, and seven years at Crystal Palace and West Ham United between 1985 and 1992. Charlton share local South London derbies with Millwall and Crystal Palace, and a rivalry with West Ham United.

GOALS FOR MY STORY:
  • Fire Charlton back into the Premier League.
  • Win the title within 3 seasons.
  • Create a successful youth system.
Good Luck! Love the title!

Roland Duchatelet completes Charlton takeover; fans rejoice.

Belgian shrewd businessman billionaire Rolan Duchatelet has completed the takeover of Charlton Athletic. Consequently, this has prompted a change in boardroom roles, as Chairman Michael Slater departed today, leaving Richard Murray to fill these boots.

Chris Powell has left his position as manager by mutual consent as new owner Duchatelet looks to bring fresh ideas to the Charlton staffing setup. The board wish Chris Powell all the best for a further successful career in football management and for a long, happy and healthy future. Powell was seen leaving the club with a fond smile before boarding a plane to America, but it remains to be seen whether he is lining up a role in MLS soccer.

It is widely believed that Sam Slater, a recently qualified manager is set to take over.

One Charlton member of staff, Under 21s manager Jason Euell had this to say: "Chris was a great manager and motivator here, but I agree a change of direction was needed for us to progress in this highly contested division".

Whilst current Captain Johnnie Jackson remarked: "I want to play in the premier league, and I am sure with the new funding from our new owner and with a new manager, we can propel ourselves to that summit and maybe even acclimatise to the step up like Alan Curbishley did all those years back".
Good luck :) I wonder who'll take over. Little intro from Jason Roberts there :P

Charlton appoint Slater as new manager

http://static-imgs-acf.hereisthecity.com/20110721/70/charlton_athletic_12799.jpg

Charlton Athletic have today named Chris Powell's successor, as expected- recently qualified English manager Sam Slater. Slater is looking forward to the challenge as he commented when met with journalists outside the ground prior to signing the deal: "Charlton is a huge club with tremendous history. I want to get them back into the premier league and keep them there. That's my goal first and foremost." It is known that Slater fosters the same philosophy as Harry Redknapp, who he has great admiration for, as well as Manuel Pellegrini's attack-minded nous. He favours possession based football, something that Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers taught him whilst studying.

Slater is inspired by current QPR manager Harry Redknapp.

It is understood that a press conference will be called at 10:00AM tomorrow morning to introduce the new Charlton manager, and we already understand staff members have mutually terminated their contracts. We will have more on the staffing changes as the night goes on.
Inspired by the 'Wheeler Dealer' are ya? ;)

Here's your banner!
@P-KIDDY, aye, I am! Not just for that though. He epitomises what all football managers should aim to be. He can spot hidden talent, motivates, inspires and is old school. Even though I am a City fan I rate Sir Alex as the world's best, then Redknapp.

Redknapp is responsible for these heroes.
@Josh7798 thanks for the banner. It is great! :D

PRESS CONFERENCE: SAM SLATER MEETS THE MEDIA

Sam Slater gave a press conference at 10:00AM today to introduce himself to the media, the public and the fans. He was joined by injured Captain Johnnie Jackson and current assistant manager Alex Dyer. Rather than listing each question by it's author, here is a list in a simpler format.
What is your tactical approach to the game?

I feel in no position to even hint at my tactical approach to one game, as the variables in football nowadays are extremely varied. It is dangerous to foster but one solid approach.

Do you have in mind a regular starting eleven?

Yes, of course I do. I put out 11 on the pitch!

But do you have in mind a set 11 players, who you can name for us now?

No, because I only started this adventure yesterday, and why would I reveal something so important that may ultimately prove crucial in the league?

Would you be willing to let players such as Gowers, Dervite, Church, Green and Kermogant go? They are more fringe players at the moment?

Sorry? Who made them fringe players since last night?

Will staff already here be staying?

I don't know. You'd need to ask them if they wanted to. If a member of staff wants to go, I am fine with it, as I do like to appoint my own staff.

You already spoke of how you aim to get this Valley team into the Premiership and then consolidate from there, but do you think perhaps you are being too optimistic, not realistic and are heaping too much unnecessary pressure on your players?

Of course not. What harm is there in this hope? This team used to be in the top league, and this is where they belong. And yes, before you ask, I am a Manchester City fan, and yes, I will remain professional when we play them. But that's beyond the point. These fans are brilliant and they deserve to be back in the big time, and I think we can do it!

Slater creates the Duchatelet Cup

Sam Slater has only been in the job since yesterday, yet he has already made his mark on the club, by toasting an annual friendly cup in honour of the club's new billionaire owner, Roland Duchatelet. Charlton will play Schalke II in the semi final, whilst FC Bayern II entertain London Tigers. Slater has announced that half the gate receipts will go to the charity Soccer Aid.

Duchatelet was extremely proud to learn of the games planned. He wants to thank Slater for his kind gesture: "I have to say, I am honoured. I am very happy with our new manager and firmly believe we can go on and do great things under him!". Injured Captain Johnnie Jackson may not feature at all, but he still reserved special praise for the event: "it is a very clever way of getting the lads motivated and into a winning mentality so early in pre-season. If we can win, this momentum can carry us through the tough season ahead".
