Reaction To This Month’s Results

In a month with a mixed results of fixtures ended in a win in KPB’s and Christoph’s first competive game for Schalke and on and off the piych both of them pulled out all the stocks to see Schalke through to the next round. Christian Fuchs has been nominated Schalke Player of The Month after his fine performances through pre season whilst Fuchs picked up the Man of The Match Award in the German Cup game

Kevin-Prince Boateng: I'm pleased to have picked up our first cup win of the campaign - the performance was good, we started well and showed our quality throughout. Obviously I'm happy with my own performance and the atmosphere in the stadium. I hadn't trained very much so it's a relief to settle in so easily. I'd been in touch with Schalke for a while - I had three great years with AC Milan but my aim now is to take things game by game, we've got to win in Franfurt in a couple of weeks and that's all we're thinking about.

Julian Draxler: The team played at a fantastic and intense level throughout, and we had the outstanding Jefferson Farfan. We've definitely strengthened well, Boateng and Aogo made good debuts, they were fully involved.

Adam Szalai: I'm delighted to be able to celebrate my first home win in Schalke colours. Our two new arrivals [Boateng and Aogo] were excellent and showed their quality immediately.

KPB: I’m honoured to be named captain so early into my Schalke career and I’ll try my best to replicate what Howedes has done for the club and hopefully even though he’s no longer the captain he will help me learn my role and gain the respect of the players. It’s never easy when you join a new club, especially not after you’ve only trained once, but the team made it easy for me. The lads have made me feel at home and I’ve integrated well. The coach has made me feel at ease too. It was also a bit of a surprise for me to be in the starting XI straight away, but that says it all about the faith the new coach and the club have in me. They see me as a leader and I just want to perform to my best and help the lads. I’ve said that I would like to join Schalke and now I’m here. It was my decision, both in a sporting sense and in terms of my personal life. The game is different here to in Italy; it's far quicker, and my son lives here in Germany, so everything’s perfect.

Schalke Learn Playoff Fate

FC Schalke 04 were seeded in the draw for the play-off round of the UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign. The Royal Blues' strong showings on the European stage in recent seasons were crucial to the decision, as their amassed points total in the coefficient ranking system worked in their favour, meaning they could not be drawn against fellow continental giants FC Arsenal or AC Milan.

Instead they were drawn against Pacos of Portugal who were unseeded in the draw.I n the 2012–13 season, they surprisingly qualified for the 2013–14 UEFA Champions League play-offs for the first time in their history after achieving 3rd place in the league by passing favourites Braga and Sporting CP, making it their highest finish ever. The club were managed that season by Paulo Fonseca, who left at the end to join FC Porto, and was replaced by Costinha.

The origin of the club dates back to the 1930s, when it was named Sport Club Pacense. They played for two decades without any official recognition until they entered the lower divisions in 1950, under the name Futebol Clube Vasco da Gama. The club then changed their kit colours to the current ones and renamed themselves Futebol Clube Paços de Ferreira.

Their first match under the current name came on 19 November 1950, beating A.D. Lousada 2–1. Agostinho Alves was the first goal scorer in the history of the Pacenses. The club then played in Portugal's third regional division until the 1956–57 season, where they were crowned champions. The club crest was created in 1961–62, and was used ever since.

The club was relegated and then promoted again and supporters hit the streets of the city on 17 June 1973 when they defeated Perosinho 3–0. One year later, they won the third division championship on 14 June 1974, after defeating Estrela de Portalegre. The hero of the game was the goalscorer Mascarenhas.
