The Argentine, 42, has decided that enough is enough and had called time upon his managerial career down on the south coast. He has been in deep conversation with the Southampton board for weeks now and has clearly not been able to come up with a solution to their problem. Pochettino had set out his aims and requirements for the season to the board who clearly felt he was begin unreasonable in his demands. The rumours are that he was requesting a transfer budget of £25 million and the board simply couldn’t give him that much to spend. He also stated that he expected to be playing in a European competition in the following season and this was the reason for his high demands. The chairman thought he was simply trying to get as much cash as possible off the already so generous board.
The situation had seemed to have calmed down over the past few days but the resignation of Pochettino can hardly come as a surprise to the Saints’ fans. Sky bet and bet365 have already placed Steve Clark as the odds on favourite at 1/2 whereas they have placed coach Radhi Jaidi as an outsider at 12/1. There is no word yet on whether any of Pochettino’s back room staff are to follow him out of the door at Southampton.
