I was born here, Rostrevor, back in year that we enjoyed what is now 'Rick Rolling' and Our Wee Country failed again to qualify for Euro 88.

My ancestry involved the mines in Sheffield, which is why my favourite football team is Sheffield United. In November 1940, the threat of Nazi bombing in Sheffield was so big, that my grandfather decided to move to this peaceful town right next to the Irish sea. One month later, Sheffield was almost destroyed in the 'Sheffield Blitz'.

Now, I am sitting here in a park bench looking down on the town I call home. I had just been sacked from my job at the car store nearest to my house. I was thinking about football, and I realised all that I knew about tactics in the beautiful game. The head coach at Northern Ireland had recently resigned, and I was actually thinking about it for a second. Then, this guy comes before me:

He sits down right beside me, and he says:
"Thomas..."
"How do you know my name?"
"I know everybody, my friend."
"Who are you, then?
"That's not important, what is important is that you don't have a job, what is it that you are going to do now?"
"Well, you wont believe this, but I was just thinking about being manager of Northern Ireland."
"Do you have any experience?"
"I played for Killowen Celtic as a youth, that's all."
"Well, I think you should pursue the job that you want, and remember this, whatever you choose to do, I will be behind you, Thomas."
"Thanks for tha... where have you gone?"

He'd just vanished into thin air. I don't know what happened, maybe I am just going crazy. I don't think that I'm ill, anyway. And I don't think that anyone would talk to me like that and then vanish...

Hold on, did I just see God?

One Month Later

God didn't appear to me again, but his words still stay stuck in my head.
Well, I think you should pursue the job you want, and remember this, whatever you choose to do, I will be behind you, Thomas.

It is that belief that has got me here, I have applied for the job, been through all the interviews, and now I am about to find out if I have the job of Northern Irish head coach.

The president of the IFA, Jim Shaw, walked into the room with me and about 5 other managers, among them included people that were completely unknown to me, to people like Peter Schmeichel and David Weir (sacked from Sheffield United, I don't really like the guy).

"Which one of you is Thomas Donaldson?" said Jim Shaw
"That's me."
"You've got the job."

That's was all he said. I'm know the manager of Northern Ireland. I guess I did actually see God.
Northern Ireland National Football Team:
Captain - Aaron Hughes (QPR)
Vice Captain - Steven Davis (Southampton)
Best Player Jonny Evans (Manchester United)
World Cup Qualifying Group 4:
1. Russia (18 Points)
2. Portugal (12 Points)
3. Israel (12 Points)
4. NORTHERN IRELAND (9 Points)
5. Luxembourg (3 Points)
6. Azerbaijan (0 Points)

My first game is against Switzerland in 2 days! I've got to make a good tactic very quickly!
Northern Ireland v. Switzerland
Northern Ireland 3/1 - Draw 2/1 - Switzerland 4/5

7': Inler clears as far as Jonny Evans, who plays it forward to Chris Baird. Some quick passing involving Corry Evans and Steven Davis now... Davis with the through ball to WARD! JAMIE WARD IS THROUGH!!! Jamie Ward with a hard shot to the bottom corner puts Northern Ireland in front!!!
Northern Ireland 1-0 Switzerland

8': Shaqiri on the wing, a dangerous looking attack by Switzerland. Shaqiri plays the ball in to Derdiyok, with the VOLLEY!!! What a goal by Derdiyok to get the equaliser for Switzerland!
Northern Ireland 1-1 Switzerland

13': Corry Evans and Steven Davis are playing really well with each other at the moment, and it looks like Northern Ireland have a chance! No, Billy McKay is tackled and Liechtensteiner puts it out for a throw.

27': There's lots of tackling going on in the box at the moment, the ball is bouncing off Kyle Lafferty and most of the Switz defence! It comes out to the feet of Ward. He shoots... Same as his other goal earlier. WHAT A FINISH!!!
Northern Ireland 2-1 Switzerland

Half Time - Northern Ireland 2-1 Switzerland (Ward 7,27; Derdiyok 8)

49': The ball is played back to Cathcart who will try to play it forward, OH IT'S BEEN BLOCKED!!! Derdiyok is clean through! WHAT A SAVE BY LEE CAMP!!! Corner to Switzerland.

66': Drmic on the wing now, Shaqiri is on the edge of the box, running in. Drmic plays in the cross, to back post. This has to be a goal.
Northern Ireland 2-2 Switzerland

Full Time - Northern Ireland 2-2 Switzerland

Donaldson's notes:
I guess that it's good to draw with a team 116th in the world against a team that is 22nd. There are some improvements we'll have to make, for sure, but if Jamie Ward can inspire his team to play like he did today, we could still end up qualifying for the World Cup!

Interview with Jamie Ward

By the way that Jamie Ward played against Switzerland last night, you'd never have guessed that he was only making with fifth appearance for Northern Ireland. The two goals he scored were actually his first. He interviewed him earlier today.

Well done on your Man of the Match performance last night. You played well. How did it feel to score that first goal?
After that goal, I just couldn't stop smiling. I have to give thanks to Thomas for playing me, there were plenty of other right wingers, and he picked me.
Were you nervous when you took the shot on?
Well, I have to take shots like that in training all the time, but I was kind of nervous. I just looked at what part of the ball I needed to hit, and all off the nervousness just went away then.
I'm guessing that you weren't as nervous with the second goal?
No, I was! The angle of the shot, and the way it came to my feet, I'm kind of expected to score, and to put my country into the lead!
Do you think you'll get to play against Portugal in the next match?
I think Thomas played a full strength side today, so I certainly hope that you'll see me play up against Ronaldo!
We've both got stuff to do now, so I'll end the interview now. Thanks for your time.
Yeah, thanks.
