Haarlem: one in, one out

The Haarlem Lions have announced news on transfers. The new Jupiler League club have signed up a player from their affiliate Chelsea. The player they have signed is goalkeeper Matej Delac, who will join on loan for one season. Delac is a 20-year-old goalkeeper from Croatia is one of Chelsea’s biggest talents in goal, and he could become Chelsea’s first keeper in the coming years.
Meanwhile, signing at another club, is assistant coach Stanley Menzo, who has accepted an offer to manage the national team of Qatar. The former HFC Haarlem has just joined the club, together with many other football legends. Menzo will stay at Haarlem, but he’ll occasionally be in Qatar to train his national side.

More signings at Haarlem

New Jupiler League club Haarlem wants to make an impression this season, as they’ve signed more players for their already strong squad. Former Roda JC, RKC and Liverpool player Krisztián Németh has joined the outfit of experienced coach Co Adriaanse. Németh was a very good young talent, but after spells in Holland and Greece, it became clear that he wasn’t as good as people thought. People thought he would become Liverpool’s first striker, now that seems very unlikely. The Hungarian striker has joined on a 4.8k deal until the summer of 2015.

The second signing Haarlem have made, is centre-back Leon Tol, who has joined from FC Volendam. The Dutch player has joined for a fee of 400k, and he has signed a 3-year-deal in the Haarlem Stadion. Tol has played for Volendam on 46 occasions, and before joining the side, he played for Volendam amateur side RKAV.

Haarlem have also signed Florent as a back-up left-back for Justiana. This 23-year-old Frenchman has joined the club for a fee of 100k. The former Braga player will earn 1k per week, and he has signed a contract until 2015.

Chairman's Log, #1

Pre-season 2013

So far, I am very pleased. I am overjoyed at the amount of support this project is getting. In all honesty, I wasn't sure how the Dutch public would take to an Englishman running a club in their country. I wasn't sure how the Dutch press would take to it, either. But I have been blown away by the support that I, and the club have been getting. The players have settled in really nicely and everything is going to plan.

To get the club was very tricky. I was up against some real Dutch footballing legends, such as Clarance Seedorf and Dennis Bergkamp. Why the Royal Dutch Football Association, or the KNVB, chose me, rather than money loaded stars that are the image of Dutch football, I will never know. But I am very happy that I have been given this opportunity to own a football club.

The manager, Co Adriaanse, has so far been fantastic. The players he has picked up are all quality, especially Matej Delac. To get a player of his quality in the second division is amazing. When he emailed me about the offer he was going to put in, I gave him the cash he needed straight away, and I was so glad when he signed. All of the players should be playing in the Eredivise, but instead the opted to join us, The Project, as I shall call it. I told Co to tell the players that they shouldn't be here for the money, and I told him to not sign anyone that would go against this. I told him to sign players that had ambition and desire to play for the club and to play football. Hopefully, this attitude will rub through the squad and hopefully this will create a great, winning team.

From what I have seen of Co in training, is immense, and I am so glad he is our manager. His methods are crazy, and he deservedly earns the nickname 'Psycho Co'. But, personally, I believe that he is doing what I right for the club. These methods are creating a real togetherness about the squad. He is bringing a winning mentality to the squad. A squad without a winning mentality is no squad at all. That is my view.

I cannot wait for pre-season to begin. Co won't tell me any of the tactics, yet, which is slightly annoying, but he said "it would all be revealed in time." I am assuming, once he has the squad he wants, he will tell me, or I hope he will.
Good Update , like the concept , will follow with interest

Manager’s Log, #1

So, where should I start with my managing career? I’ve coached more clubs than I can count on both hands. Before Haarlem, I coached 12 teams. At some clubs, I’ve been very successful, at others my training methods didn’t really work.
I’ve been very successful at a number of clubs, with my quick counter attacking football, a style I’ll also use at the Lions. I have never stayed at a club longer than 3 years in my long career, but I like a change of scenery every season or so. I had the most fun at AZ, I joined them after leaving Ajax, where I left after a series of bad results. Also, the board didn’t like because of certain comments on individuals. Anyway, at AZ, I finished 10th in my first season, then 5th and in my last season, 3rd. In that last season, we reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, and we surprised the footballing world by beating Valencia. We went out of the cup on away goals against Sporting CP, which was one of the most frustrating moments of my career, as we also conceded in the last minute of extra time.

Because of these performances with AZ, I joined Portuguese outfit FC Porto, where there was a lot of uncertainty after the departure of Mourinho: 4 managers in 2 years. But I managed to bring them the first double since he went to Chelsea, meaning I won the Premier League and the cup. But again, I decided to choose for a change of scenery, but it didn’t work out in my favour, as since then I have coached Mettalurg Donetsk, Al-Sadd, the Qatar National Team, and Red Bull Salzburg. After that, I had a short spell at Twente, I resigned after disagreements with my assistants.

I was without a club since 2012, and I spent my free-time being a pundit at Studio Sport. I missed being a manager, and I thought back to the times I let players run behind my car for 40 kilometres when I was at Willem II, or at Ajax, when I ordered a player to run over the other players with football boots on. So when I received this job offer, I immediately accepted it, and I started looking for a house in Haarlem.

When I came to Haarlem, we already had a very good coaching set-up, with great personalities as Ruud Gullit and Ruud van Nistelrooij. The staff, including me, sat down and talked about players to sign, and I’m very happy with the squad as it is right now, especially with the new signings we’ve made.

For the tactics, I’ll use the system I always use: a quick, counter-attacking system, which puts the emphasis on good defending rather than scoring a lot of goals. The system that fits the squad best is a 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow formation, but we can’t use certain players in it, and I’m looking to sell those players.
Matej Delac it's a very good signing! I like this idea and I will be following this! Good luck!

New Chief Scout Revealed

Edwin van der Sar, the club's new Chief Scout

I am delighted to announce a new staff addition to the team. Former Manchester United and Ajax Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has become the Chief Scout for the club. He will make scout reports for potential signings and current players.

I am very happy that Edwin has agreed to join The Project. He is another legend of football, especially Dutch football, on the team. His experience will be key to the club. He will make a great scout, as he knows how to spot talent and Co Adriaanse will be delighted to work with such a talented and successful person. For the club, it is amazing as it boosts our image as a club so much more, to have another global name in the ranks.

Manager Co Adriaanse has this to say about the ex-player:

I'm very happy to have this great man on board. I have seen him play for Ajax, and he was a great player. If he's even half as good as a scout, I'll be very pleased, and I'm glad Gullit has chosen Van der Sar as our chief scout.

Edwin van der Sar also had something to say upon joining the club:

I am very pleased that I was offered to be part from a club with such great ambitions. Maybe we are a small club now, but I think that with my experience, I can help this club grow! I want to thank Mr. Thomas Allery for giving me this job and also Co Adriaanse for accepting to work with me! Together with Ruud Gullit and Ruud van Nistelrooij as part of the staff, I promise to all our fans that we will make history!

I would like to welcome AAN to the team as Edwin van der Sar! His role will become clearer later on...
very good project you have here. exciting times in Holland

good luck ill be following

2013 Pre-Season

Haarlem have completed their first pre-season ever, and it’s time to look back at how the team has performed. Gullit has set up a pre-season with an easy start, but a near impossible ending, when Haarlem played against Real Madrid and Chelsea. This is Haarlem’s pre-season tour:

Oosterzonen – Haarlem Lions (0-3):
Haarlem started off the season very good against Oosterzonen, a Belgian third-tier team. The Lions dominated, and eventually won by “only” 3-0.
Stats:

Haarlem Lions – USBCO (1-1):
The next match Haarlem played, was against Ligue National side USBCO, who played in Ligue 1 a couple of years ago. Haarlem dominated the match, but USBCO scored an equaliser in the 92nd minute: 1-1.
Stats:

FC Lisse – Haarlem Lions (1-4):
Another good away victory for Adriaanse’s men, after his team were trailing until the 60th minute. But then, the team scored 4 goals to make sure they had a good victory to build on.
Stats:

FC Patro Eisden – Haarlem Lions (1-3):
Haarlem had to play one more game against a much weaker team, to get their confidence up. And they certainly got their confidence up with a nice 3-1 victory.
Stats:

Haarlem Lions – Real Madrid (0-4):
A defeat was to be expected, as Real Madrid put up a strong side. But Haarlem eventually defended pretty well, and managed to only get defeated with 4-0, a decent result to say the least.
Stats:

Haarlem Lions – Chelsea FC (0-4):
Chelsea, Haarlem’s affiliate club, also won 4-0 against Haarlem, and again, Haarlem put up a bit of a fight against a strong Chelsea side.
Stats:
Great idea :D Loving the graphics as well...
Great story so far, is it me or does the stadium look exactly like PEC Zwolle's stadium?

Chief Scout’s Log, #1

Matej Delac

So, as a chief scout, my job is give a full report about a player and assign duties for our scouts…so, as soon as the club got affiliated with Chelsea, I got in touch with José, to see what players are available for loan and I was not disappointed! He offered us Matej Delac for loan, while The Blues still paid his full wage while he is on loan, so I start making a report on him to present to Co Adriaanse.

Matej Delac is a Bosnian-born Croatian goalkeeper born on 20 August 1992, so he is 21 years old. Matej was bought by Chelsea in 2010 from Inter Zapresic on an undisclosed fee, but he never got the chance to make his debut for The Blues, as in the next seasons he was loaned out to several clubs: Vitesse, Vitoria Guimarães, Vojvodina and other clubs.

At 21 years, Delac is a player with huge potential, and he can become a star player in Eredivisie! He is great at commanding the area, he has amazing reflexes and also he is very agile for his height: 190 cm. He still has to work at his aerial ability, as I would expect to be very good there with his height. Also he needs to work on rushing out, maybe also improve his positioning. But he has time to do that and he has the talent, it’s up to him! I have recommended this player to Co and I firmly believed that we should loan him immediately, and luckily, Co agreed with me.

Krisztián Németh

The next thing I was asked to do, was to find a very good striker, that can lead our club forward. But that striker shouldn’t have high wages.

After a couple of days of research, I found what we were looking for in the person of Krisztián Németh. The Hungarian international player was born in Györ, Hungary on 5 January 1989, so he is 24 years old. He doesn’t have an impressive physique at 179 cm height and a weight of 72 kg, but he has other strong points, like his tehnique, creativity, agility and first touch.

Krisztián Németh started his career in 2005 a a club from Hungary called MTK Budapest where he impressed and just 2 years later he earned a transfer to Liverpool, where he was seen as a future superstar. Sadly for him, in 3 seasons spent at Liverpool he failed to impress and didn’t played a single official match for the team. After Liverpool, he played for several clubs like Olympiakos, Blackpool or AEK Athens, but the last couple of seasons were his best, scoring 10 goals in 45 matches for Roda JC Kerkrade.

At 24 years old he still has some potential to fulfill and will be a star for our team, so I have recommended him to our manager.

Ruud Boymans

Ruud Boymans is a striker that was already at the club when I signed my contract, and he is the total opposite to Nemeth. He’s not very agile and pacey, but his physique is impressive with a height of 188 cm and 85 kg, he is the kind of striker that can make room for other strikers or wingers, a Target Man.

Ruud is very determined, a real team player. One of his best quallities is his heading and he can be a big threat at free kicks or corners if we train him. He also has good finishing and decent long shots, so I believe that he is a valuable member of the squad!

@HenryFM: Well, we didn't design it actually, the plans were there before the club went bankrupt. But yeah, now that you mention it, it really looks alike!
great update: really well written!
I really love this story, the idea behind it and everything! Keep it up because this is wonderful!
Let's do the Haarlem Shake!! :)...Good luck mate!
