Hamburg replace Slomka with Tuchel
In a surprise statement, German side Hamburger SV have appointed Thomas Tuchel as head coach with immediate affect on a two-year contract. The former Mainz manager has replaced Mirko Slomka at the Imtech Arena, whom was expected to still be in charge at the start of the forthcoming Bundesliga season. The statement, which was released out of the blue, thanked Slomka for his short period at the club before welcoming the new coach.
Following a disastrous start to last years Bundesliga season under Bert van Marwijk, Slomka replaced the Dutchman in February with the hope of keeping Hamburg in the top flight of German football. In Slomka's 15 league games he spent at the club, he recorded just 3 victories, 4 draws and 8 losses. After finishing a poor 16th, Hamburg faced Greuther Furth in a relegation-promotion play-off and eventually won on away goals to cement their place in the Bundesliga.
Despite losing key player Hakan Calhanoglu earlier this summer, Slomnka had been praised in the press for his transfer dealings as he secured the permanent transfer of striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga as well as the signatures of Valon Behrami and Nicolai Muller among others.
Sources close to the club are reporting that 39-year-old Tuchel has been given the tough task of challenging for a Europa League spot next season. The German manager led Mainz, whom he left earlier this summer, to 7th place last season which secured them a European spot.
After being appointed as head coach at Mainz in August of 2009, Tuchel led the club to an impressive 9th place in their first season back in the Bundesliga. In the following season, Mainz threatened the dominant forces of German football by finishing an unexpected 5th before two successive 13th placed finishes. Notable form in the second half of last season led to both Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen courting the former Stuttgarter Kickers player.
"I am glad to be back in German football," said Tuchel upon his unveiling. "It hasn't been long since I left Mainz but I am happy to take up this new challenge and showcase what I have to offer to a different audience. I had several enjoyable years at Mainz but now I am moving onto the next chapter of my career here at Hamburg. It is a huge club with an illustrious history in both domestic and European football which I hope I can add to in the forthcoming years."
