Kelly takes charge at Southampton

This afternoon, chairman Nicola Cortese presented 36 year old Luke Kelly as the new first team Manager at a press conference hastily called in at St. Mary's. Having played 35 times for Ireland (scoring seven goals), he's no unknown to us. He also knows the Premier League fairly well, having played for West Brom, Everton and Manchester United, famously saving a sure goal in the last minute of the 2008 Champions League final.
He had also been manager of the Irish National Team since January of this year, of yet it is unknow wether he will continue in this position.
Mauricio Pochettino, the Spurs-bound previous manager welcomed the signing, wishing Kelly all the best, "except for in the Spurs games". Jose Mourinho meanwhile answered a journalists question about the apointment: "Who is this guy? I never heard of him before. He'll be sacked before Christmas, want to bet?".

More on this later.

About myself

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/144/c/2/Luke_Kelly_by_PennyLame.jpg

My name is Luke Kelly, and I'm the new Southampton manager. I was born on the 9th of September 1977 in Dublin (where else..), and was named after the famous singer. Growing up, I had two main interests: Football, and cycling. So really, I'm more of a Sean Kelly than a Luke Kelly. Anyhow, football was what I was better at, by miles.

At 13, I got scouted by Shelbourne whilst playing center forward for my local team. Not the sort of position you'd have expected, me being a CDM, huh? From there on my path led me to play for West Brom in the Championship, then Premiership, then Championship again, before I signed at Everton in 2004, helping the team to a 4th place. From there I moved on to Manchester United in 2007, where I won pretty much everything there is to win in English football as well as the Champions League.

Allthough I was often only a sub, I loved my time there. Sir Alex was a great mentor both for player-Luke and after my retirement in 2011 manager-Luke. Then in January of this year I was offered the job as Ireland head coach, successing a legend like Trappatoni. I have decided to keep this job and manage both Southampton and Ireland, a task I feel well up for.

Targets

Of course, every manager has some goals he wants to reach. In brackets are by when I'd like to have achieved that.

- Qualify for Europa League [2015]
- Qualify for Champions League [2017]
- Win a trophy (Prem, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League or Champions League) [2017]
- Win the Premiership [2019]
- Win the Champions League [2020]

- Qualify for all major upcoming tournaments with Ireland
- Reach the knockout stages at the 2016 Euros
- Reach the knockout stages at the 2018 World Cup
- Reach the Quarters at the 2020 Euros
- Reach the Quarters at the 2022 World Cup
Good Luck on your first story :D

Southampton seal two deals

New Southampton Manager Luke Kelly today confirmed signing two new players, after only three days on the job.
Signing number 1 is 19 year old Max Clayton, joining from Crewe Alexandra for 150k €. He is one of the biggest English talents around at the moment, being seen as a possible star striker for Club and Country in the future. For the moment however it seems most likely he will be loaned back out, possibly even to Crewe.
Kelly's thoughts on him: "He's clearly a class player, and one of the biggest talents around at the moment. He's not ready to play for us just yet I think, but he's capable of great things in the future."
http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/Saints/MaxClayton_OverviewProfile_zpsa6c033fe.png

The next man got released from the Manchester United U21s team at the end of last season, but caught the attention of Kelly while he managed the U21s. It's 19 year old Northern Irishman Paddy McNair. Allthough many believe he does not have it in him to previal in the Premiership, he might be a valuable asset in times of injury worries, though he has already been listed for loan by Southampton.

The club is believed to still be interested in a right winger and any talented, particularly English players. With a budget of nearly 30 Million, they shouldn't have a hard time finding a counterpart to Dusan Tadic.

@Pepeu Thanks mate :D

Southampton splash the cash

As an Irish manager, Kelly was always expected to pursue Irish players, but the signing of Aiden McGeady from Spartak Moscow
for around 9 Million Euros still comes as a bit of a shock. The new Number 10 is a complete newcomer to the Premiership, having played with Celtic before going to Russia. He will be hoping to have an immediate impact, linking up with Nathaniel Clyne on the wing, and fellow Irish international Shane Long (Who is yet to arrive) in the centre of attack. Of course Kelly has known McGeady since he took over Ireland in January of this year, yet many wonder wether 9 Million might be a bit much for him. He will be ready to play in their big pre season test against FC Barcelona at St. Mary's.

The second signing cost a bit less, at roughly 7,5 Million, but is at least equally as exciting. Young Colombian centreback Eder Alvarez Balanta is also a new comer to the Premier League, joining from Argentinean outfit River. Allthough he is only 21, he will be expected to take up a leading role in the defence of the Saints. It is rumoured that they beat Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to the signature of the player.

Kelly also confirmed that young talents André Hansen, from Odd, and Richie Towell, from Dundalk, have been signed on pre contracts and will join the club on January 1st 2015.

Köln 1-0 Southampton (Friendly)
Gerhards 9'
Clyne
We were just really really unlucky here. We absolutely dominate in the first half, but got caught out badly once, that's what happens playing the only goalie that's around at the moment, who would normally do well to sit on the bench for us.

Sassuolo 1-0 Southampton (Friendly)
Terranova 76'
Bertrand
Similar story here, albeit not as clearly against the run of play as the Köln result. It was a good match, both teams had a chance to clinch it, and it went Sassuolos way in the end. This was also Max Claytons first start for us, on the right wing. Tadic and Pelle were the two new signings to debut, besides loanees Bertrand and Alderwereild.

Southampton 1-1 Barcelona (Friendly)
Rodriguez 24'
Adriano 82'
Davis

Well, what a match. Nearly beating the big FC Barcelona is of course ideal for the last test before the real season begins. As you can see, we were looking really thin defensively, and yet, we held up for the best part of the match. This is in huge parts down to Kelvin Davis, who really was outstanding today. McGeady debuting on the right wing also made our attack look a lot better. In the end it was Nath Clyne who brought in the cross to Rodriguez, who volleyed it in nicely. He had a chance to double the lead after 70 minutes, but backpassed the ball to Valdes from close distance after an inch perfect McGeady cross.

A great start to the season for us, with a convincing home win over Liverpool. Meeting three of our former players in Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert, who we knew would be dangerous, which he showed with his early goal. Even so, it never looked like Liverpool would be a huge danger. Then, within 90 seconds, Dusan Tadic and Jay Rodriguez turn the match around for us at the half hour mark. From there on it's about seeing the match out, which Morgan Schneiderlin (via Penalty) and Dusan Tadic again in the closing minute of the match manage.

Well, what a disappointment that was. Losing like that on day two certainly was not what we had planned, allthough there is little you can do to stop an attacking lineup of van Persie, Falcao and Rooney. Balanta playing his first Premier League match from the start of course didn't make things any easier. Long getting his first goal for us was about the only upside to it, and of course the fact that the meanest attack in the Prem is behind us now, at least away.

Waste of time for us. We played basically our second team, and it showed. Without McGeady on, we were lacking some real creativity, especially after Dusan Tadic came off injured early in to the second half. It was generally a very poor game decided by Daryl Murphy's header from a corner. Might have to consider him for the upcoming Irish internationals then.

Huge improvement from midweek. Emmanuel Mayuka, raised from the U21s to play in Tadic's place, had an outstanding match, grabbing both our goals. With him there, I'm not too scared about the injury to Tadic. Other than that, Shane Long also played well, setting up the first goal.

(Some of the lineup screens went missing, sorry for that)

A poor showing in our first friendly of the new season, allthough it wasn't all bad. We were all right throughout most of the match (allthough not during the five minutes we conceded all three goals in), and we mainly lacked good attacking force. It is definitely an experience to be learnt from - luckily enough it was only a friendly and not a qualifier.

Finland 2-3 Ireland (Euros 2016 qualifier)

It looks close enough on the scoreboard, but it really wasn't that close. We had the match well wrapped up by the time we conceded our second, and could well have gone on to win 5-2 or 6-2. Alas, we didn't, and maybe that'll come back to haunt us.

Football really is a game of two halves, which we showed here brilliantly. We were pretty appaling in the first half, but picked up a lot in the second half, enough for us to take a well deserved draw. As always, using our chances was a problem, we probably could have won it otherwise.

Newcastle 2-2 Southampton (Premier League)

Heart attack match right here. In a game between two equal teams, it really could have gone both ways. For a long time it looked like Newcastle would take full points at home, but in the end super-sup Mane salvaged us a draw. Hopefully by the time we face them at home we'll be experienced enough, especially at the back, to take the win.

Wigan 3-4 Southampton (Premier League)

In the craziest match I have ever seen so far, we beat Wigan 4-3, after leading 2-0 after 7 minutes, then conceding three (!) goals on the verge of half time. Then unlikely hero Eder Alvarez Balanta stepped up to score a brace, getting us all three points. Who would have thought that it would take two goals from our centre back to secure us the win here?

Good luck!
Shane Long has been on a different level so far! :O
I'm enjoying this story, it's nicely organised so do keep it up. I think you made some very decent signings, and nice job kicking off the season with that Liverpool win. Long's been outstanding!
