Players which have good Ability on paper but when on the pitch are utterly useless!

Javier Garrido, LB, Man city. Sent him on loan to My Leeds United Squad who was in the championship. by far the best left back in the league but could never muster a rating of 7! always 6 and sometimes 5! Plonker :p
i think defenders are underrated in fm08.

seriously in fm07 defenders could get ratings above 7. but now its rarely u see defenders get a good rating.

especially goalkeepers, if my goalkeeper gets nothing to do he will either get a 6 or 7.

but a goalkeeper for a good team but a team that arent big and will let other teams create chances on that team will be a great goalkeeper.

i dont understand the rating with fm08

Sergio Ramos (in R.Madrid) is a defender and he often has 8 or more.
Barzagli (bought from Palermo) and Marcelo (bought from R. Madrid
and plays as DL or WBL, never as an ML) also have high match rating,
usually around 8, especially when they have high morale.
Zapata (plays as DC in Udinese) has mixed match rating between 7 and 8.
he never has less than 7 and more than 8.

i have zapata, but he doesnt often get 8 at all.

and full backs do get a higher rating as they go forward more.

but my centre backs dont get high ratings at all. only coloccini(mostly when he scores in a game)

frustrating even though the other team hasnt just gotten around 3 chances and my defence has been top my defenders get 7 in rating and the goalkeeper at times 6...

i mean if the defence and the GK keep a cleansheat at least there should be 7 in rating, and should be 8...

frustrating that they have changed the rating system from fm 07.

if u play against a weaker team, and u're attacking
the opposition all the time, then your defenders have
nothing to do, they rarely play the ball and that's
why they have rating 6 or 7.
i've played against Arsenal once and i won 6-4,
but although my GK and defenders allowed Arsenal
to score 4 goals, they had match rating at 8.
midfielders and attackers (especially giggs, ronaldo and rooney)
had 9, because of the assists and goals.
if someone cares about rating, an amazing match with
strong opponent is better than playing with a team,
which is most likely to be facing relegation.
well in fm 07 the ratings mattered tbh.

if u looked at 2 similiar left backs for an example, both good, and both playing for quite a good team, now both have played around 20 matches and if u looked at the ratin one would have 6.98, the other would have 7.20, i would buy the one with higher rating consistency etc. and he did brilliantly at my club.

but i guess thats something u have to learn for fm 08 that makes it more difficult

honestly ? I disagree :)
it all depends on his team mates and his preffered moves.
we all know, that Ashley Cole is a great left back.
but when I bought him to Man United in FM07, he was very poor.
weak in attack and commiting lots of fouls.
he got yellow cards in almost every match.
same was with Ronaldinho in FM07.
he doesn't fit in Premiership, because it's different type of football.
I always check what my scout thinks about a player, which I want to buy.
next I check his mental attributes, and in the end what is the transfer fee
for players I'm interested in.
I sometimes ask my players which footballer do they recommend.
I also buy many youngsters for my reserves to train them better
and to prepare them properly for the first squad.
It's a good thing to earn lots of money.
I buy few hot prospects, and when they grow up, give them a chance to
play a few games and then sell them for couple millions :)

Breno from sao paulo usually gets 8 rating for me but not all the time though but it's still rare for a centre back to keep getting 8 wihout scoring goals hence i recommend him greatly.

Goalkeepers from good defensive teams don't get very high ratings due to the defenders snuffing out the opponents before he can make any saves. It's difficult to find a highly average rating goalkeeper in the strong teams.
Barzagli often gets ratings between 8-9 for me, and squeezes in the odd 10 every now and then. He went through a fantastic run at the end of the season and ended up with 7 goals in the last 13 games, which is unbelievable for a defender. Ferdinand has also been fairly consistent, so I haven't really noticed any problems with the ratings.

10!?!??!

seriously there must be something wrong with my fm game, I HAVE NEVER EVER WITNESSED A PLAYER GETTING A RATING OF 10 in fm 08.

My defence:
Marcelo - DL
Ferdinand DC
Barzagli - DC
Richards - DR

I lost only 11 goals in 24 games this season (Premiership only).
Barzagli is truly the best defender in this game.
His rating is usually 8, but when he scores, he got 9.
He is described as a quality player, and everyone, who is
described as "quality player" should bbought at all costs.
Also Bojan and Giovani dos Santos are quality players,
but it's almost impossible to buy them from Barcelona.
Barzagli and Van Der Vaart are crucial players in my tactics,
so I will buy them to every club I'm managing.
whoever saying one of his players got 10 (especially as a defender!) must be deluded! The rating system is very tough in FM 08 and as far as I can recall, 10 is absolutely a non-existence rating.. even if your striker scores 6 goals in a game he's still gonna get 9 at the highest. I'm with you RedArmy... this guy is deluded mate!:con
