Welcome.

You will know me well through my successes at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning eleven Premier League's, three F.A. Cups and two Champions League medals can hardly go unnoticed can it?



Well, not a large amount of people know this, but underneath all the fame I gained from playing alongside David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and all the medals - as a child I supported Oldham Athletic. I have been a regular visitor to Boundary Park for many years - even in my playing years I was still sat in the stands. Just last year when I retired, I almost accepted an offer by Lee Johnson to come out of retirement to turn out for my boyhood club.



In 2013, controversy surrounded me about a potential move to Oldham. It was in the Manchester Evening News, I was only there to 'give the players a boost' as the chairman Simon Corney described it. But the whole scenario enticed me, and as soon as I heard Lee Johnson had left the club to take on the managerial role at Barnsley, I couldn't resist but to apply.

There's been rumours about me joining the club ever since Johnson's departure - even in the national papers. Yes, it was true but I wanted to keep it under wraps until a decision was made by the club I've supported since I was a little boy.

Now, here I stand proudly as manager of Oldham Athletic Football Club. I've gone from Champions League Finals to League One - and I cannot wait to get started.

J: Hi Paul, Alex Perry from the Football League Paper here. How do you feel about your new role Boundary Park?

PS: Obviously, as many of people will have found out now, I was an Oldham fan as a little kid. Used to come up to Boundary Park regularly in my childhood - almost like a second home is this place. I mean, I did play for our rivals for my whole career but hey, that's in the past now. It's time for me to create a new legacy here.

J: Jamie Rose from BBC Radio Manchester here. Considering the lengthy time span you spent at Old Trafford in your playing career, it seems a little strange that you have taken the job at Boundary Park. Will your memories with Oldham's rivals cause any conflict in your approach to managing the club?

PS: I mean them memories are always in my head aren't they? You can't just forget over twenty years of hard work just because you've got a new job. Hopefully one day we can turn up at Old Trafford and give them a right game. But what you have to understand is that I carry my reputation around based on my time at Man United - to the players I currently have here, playing in the Champions League is a dream. Hopefully I can use my reputation I built under Sir Alex to inspire a revolution here.

J: New managers often bring about times of upheaval and some at the club might fear for their jobs. Will there be any changes?

PS: Obviously, there will be a fair few changes with the playing staff - that's just how football is. In terms of backroom staff? Hm. I'll give the current staff a few weeks to show me their strengths and understanding, and if I feel they're adequate for the level I'm aiming to reach, then they can expect to be staying with me.

J: What level are you aiming to reach, Paul?

PS: The top. My inspiration is Sir Alex Ferguson and he has taught me a lot over the time I spent with him. He's been anywhere you can go in football and there's no reason why I can't. I have the resources, it's just up to me whether I can use them correctly - which I'm confident that I can.

J: Hi, Alex Perry again. It's usual for managers to favour different competitions. Will you be concentrating primarily on getting good results in League One.

PS: Absolutely, a cup run is always nice - especially for a lower league club and teams like Bradford have proven it is possible in recent times. But a reasonable finish in the league is my primary focus this season and then from there we can possibly start talking about other competitions.

J: Many people are wondering what a man of your stature is doing at a team like Oldham. Are you selling yourself short or do you just not have any ambition?

PO: Erm, I don't think that is an approp-

PS: No, Steve. Let me answer this.

PO: Ok, sure boss.

PS: If I didn't have any ambition, what am I doing risking my reputation in the footballing world in the third tier of English football with the fans I grew up with watching my every movement? If I didn't have any ambition wouldn't I be applying for positions at top four Premier League sides? This isn't any old position either - this is a management role. Everything that goes wrong always comes back to the manager. Just have a word with yourself eh?

PO: I think that'll be all the questions Mr. Scholes will be answering today thank you.

It's never too early to bring in a few players - and that is exactly what new Oldham manager Paul Scholes has done. The former England international has signed up no less than nine new players to push Oldham further in their push for the play-offs - the place where Scholes aims to be by the end of this season.

The influx of new players has led to two departures from Boundary Park - including captain Adam Lockwood on a free transfer.

#24: Michael Doughty

The Q.P.R centre-midfielder spent last season on loan to then-League One side Stevenage in the season that ultimately led to their relegation to League Two. Doughty starred that season - making thirty-six appearances and scoring two. He's won one Wales Under-21 cap and has made one appearance from the bench so far in pre-season - the same game he made an assist. The Q.P.R Under-21 coach singled out his passing and composure as his key attributes of his game. I can't see him being a first-team regular, but he may get his chance.

A whole host of higher tier clubs were snooping around Dombaxe. Norwich, Burnley and Watford all lost out on the former Spurs graduate to League One's Oldham Athletic. The Angolan stated one of the main reasons for this decision was the factor that Paul Scholes would be managing him should he pick Boundary Park as his next destination. It was a factor that fought off high-level competition for the winger.

#15: Diomansy Kamara

Following recent spells in the lower leagues of Italy and top-flight of Turkey, Kamara found his new footballing home in Boundary Park. The former Fulham fan favourite has been rated as one of the best pulls of the transfer window by Paul Scholes and his merry men. Although he lacks as much pace as your average winger, the Senegal international has immense technical ability as well as years of experience at the highest levels of the game.

#27: Ivan Klasnic

Although he's getting into the latter stages of his career, nobody can take away the finishing prowess that the former Bolton Wanderers loanee possesses. As well as providing a threat in front of goal - the 6'1" Croat is a major threat to defenders in the air. He isn't short of composure in front of goal which is just what you need to get out of this league - a big, burly bloke up front who can finish.

#14: Vicente

Being capped 38 times by Spain doesn't happen by magic - as Vicente has and will prove in his spell for us. After fifteen years of professional football in the top flight of Spanish football, the Spaniard found himself showing off his wide array of technical ability in the Championship under the guidance of Gus Poyet, managing Brighton at this time. He then found himself falling out with the Uruguayan and was eventually released. This has led to his arrival at Boundary Park. The Spanish winger's technical ability mesmerised English defenders in the Championship, now he has gone down a level and hopes to push us further up the table.

#2: Bradley Orr

After a several consecutive loan spells at Ipswich, Blackpool and the MLS' Toronto, Bradley Orr found himself shown the door at Blackburn Rovers. Although he may lack in the technical side of the game, it's what Orr offers the side in terms of influence and determination that has got him so high in the English game. He is way above League One standard in my view, but that is what makes us such a force now with our new signings - we are way above the standard now after building pretty much a whole team of new signings.

#25: Ricardo

The champagne moment of his career to English football fans will always be his penalty-saving antics against England in both Euro 2004 and the World Cup in 2006. However, Ricardo has had much more to himself over the course of his long spanning career, spent mainly in the top-flights of Portugal and Spain, apart from a brief spell at then-Championship side Leicester. Once again, his ability outshines that of any other goalkeeper in this league and was initially brought in as back-up for Jake Kean but personally, I can see the 79-time Portuguese international taking number one spot at Boundary Park.

#13: Reece James

With Joseph Mills being the only recognised left-back in the first-team, we needed to get a back up in just in case, and Reece James fills that role perfectly. I was offered two left-backs when I asked my scouts to scour the country for one that fitted what I was looking for. They came back with Manchester United's Reece James or Liverpool's Brad Smith. I had to take the initiative that I already had good links with Manchester United, and also that James was on lower wages at Old Trafford, and in League One you must look after your finances as much as you do league results.

Paul Scholes has started his career at Boundary Park with great promise, finishing the club's pre-season schedule with four wins, one draw and no losses. Despite playing the majority of the fixtures against lower-league opposition, our new signings needed them games to settle in, and they did so evidently. Left-winger Jonathan Forte who signed this summer from Premier League side Southampton was clinical throughout the process - bagging eight goals from just four appearances.

We also signed our tenth player of the transfer window by bringing in Chelsea's Dutch defensive-midfielder Nathan Aké on loan until the end of the season. The Dutch youngster has made four Premier League appearances since arriving at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2011 from Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord for an estimated fee of £235,000.

Player of Pre-Season
#29: Jonathan Forte

The Barbados international has proven not only his skill on the wing with his pace but has more than shown his ability in front of goal, finishing eight goals in five matches in pre-season. The signing former boss Lee Johnson made has proven his worth against Conference teams - but can he do it in League One? I think so.

Two more players have joined the Paul Scholes revolution at Oldham's Boundary Park over the last few days - both of which have represented their countries at some point in their careers. However, with such players arriving, some must leave. Scholes has allowed seven first-team players leave the club to locate pastures new, one of the departures has been Oldham captain Adam Lockwood who was found out to be inadequate for the sort of team the England international wants to build.

The departures has led to the Latics gathering a total fee of £1,300,000 just from player sales so far this season. However, not a penny of that has been spent on a fee from Oldham - all the players who have arrived at Boundary Park has either been on a loan basis or a free transfer - a strategy which the Oldham board favour.

#10: Andy Johnson

As soon as I saw that Andy Johnson was a free agent AND interested in joining us, I had to get him snapped up. There was no way I was letting a fellow former England international slip through my fingers like that. Okay, he may not be what he used to be, but just in the last few seasons he was a first-team regular in the Premier League for Q.P.R. He's picked up an overall transfer fee of £19.75m throughout his career, the man is a proven goalscorer at the highest levels of the game and here in League One should be the easiest he's ever been in.

#26: Abdoulaye Faye

Despite his age, Faye is still an extremely capable defender even at the top-flight. He featured three times in the Premier League last season for Hull despite having fierce competition from the likes of Curtis Davies, Michael Dawson and Alex Bruce. This is evidence of how good he is. He may have been released but one can hardly be surprised - he's 36 years old. Him and George Elokobi at the back will be an absolute nightmare for strikers to come up against. With this addition I think we can definitely start a play-off push, despite the media thinking otherwise.

Adam Lockwood - Released

The centre-back was the first player to leave the club - despite him being the captain at the time. Although we didn't sign a single centre-back apart from Faye so far this season, Lockwood was miles below par of the quality I'm expecting within this team - never mind captain. To add to this, the man was ageing very fastly and you could see it as well - okay, Faye is older yet I sign him but Faye has the experience as well as ability, Lockwood just had the experience.

Danny Philliskirk - Free

Philliskirk starred heavily last season, making 38 appearances and scoring 4 in the league. He started his career here before moving to Chelsea but struggled to get a game anywhere apart from his return to Boundary Park. The reason he left was because the formation I have instated has no room for an attacking-midfielder in the starting eleven. Okay, he can play as a striker but four goals in thirty-eight is hardly clinical and besides, the arrival of Klasnic and Johnson would've put him further down the pecking order.

James Dayton - Free

I had recalled Dayton from his loan to St. Mirren as I thought he was good enough to command a fee from another club - however, that wasn't the case. I added Dayton to the club's unwanted list immediately after returning and set a minimum fee of £100,000 but after no bids came in, and Dayton was surplus to requirements here - I let him leave for Championship side Rotherham.

Rhys Murphy - £475,000

I had expected Murphy to shine in pre-season but whenever I gave him a game, he always failed to impress me. This led to his transfer listing in mid-August time. As he was young, and looked to have a bit of potential within him - I was expecting around £100,000 but when Millwall came in with £475,000 for the striker I immediately accepted. This was an offer too good for this calibre of player and league.

Connor Brown - £190,000

After Bradley Orr's arrival on a free transfer in late July, Brown was knocked down to third favourite in the right-back position behind Brian Wilson - the back-up right back. In other words, there was no way Brown was going to get a game here, and I knew if he outstayed his time here, he would get annoyed and it may well have affected the whole squad so when Colchester came in with the £190,000 offer - reasonably high for his calibre I had to show the youngster the door.

Carl Winchester - £275,000

Winchester was an extremely reliable midfielder during pre-season, but as soon as Nathan Aké joined us on loan, like many, he was dropped for several games. He is definitely a League One player, but we have too many midfielders on our books and unfortunately, he was the one to be shown the door.

Timothée Dieng - £350,000

Dieng was incredibly useful, as he could play both centre-back and defensive midfield very well. However, when a £350,000 offer comes in from a foreign club for a League One player, there's no way you can say no. The arrival of Abdoulaye Faye will comfort the blow of losing Dieng but his impact on the team was great and will be missed dearly should Faye not perform up to the standard I wish.

It's not 'start as we mean to go on' kind of results this month but we have done well considering the amount of changes made during the summer transfer period and I hope that once we're past the gelling stage, we can really go at this league and aim for the play-offs. We beat the league leaders in Doncaster Rovers 2-1 courtesy of a last minute winner from the debutant Abdoulaye Faye so we're already showing signs of improving. We've up into one point off the final play-off spot - yes we're only five games in but we must maintain a good position to achieve our goal this season and hanging around the play-offs is how to do it and you must do that from the off.

League Table

At the end of the first month we find ourselves in mid-table, although we are just one point away from getting into that final play-off spot. We have a positive goal difference, which although it is only one goal, is massive for us to build on.

September 2014

In September, we play 2nd placed Swindon Town and start off our Johnstone's Paint Trophy campaign away from home against Carlisle United. To be honest, though, that competition isn't very relevant to me. All it is is one more title to your name, nothing significant either. Also next month we play Gillingham who have only gained one point in the past five games who we'll be hoping to put a few goals past.

Player of the Month
Theo Robinson - Doncaster

Rovers' poacher Theo Robinson has wowed his home fans at The Keepmoat Stadium this month with his impressive performances and has duly won the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award.

The 25 year old has been in excellent form, scoring an impressive five goals in five appearances.

Barnsley's Milan Lalkovic came extremely close to taking the award but in the end has to settle for second place. George Williams of MK Dons, on loan from Fulham, took third place.

Milan Lalkovic - Barnsley

Barnsley's defensive forward Milan Lalkovic has taken the Sky Bet League One Young Player of the Month award home with him after some superb performances in front of the Oakwell faithful.

Lalkovic scored four goals in five appearances this month - great stuff from the 21 year old Slovak.

Second and third places went to a pair of loanees, with Fulham's George Williams some way off in second whilst playing for MK Dons, and Wolves' Liam McAlinden a close third after impressing at Fleetwood.

Aké: Don't Rule Out Permanent Deal!

Star loanee Nathan Aké has today spoken about the possibility of a potential permanent move to Boundary Park in the future IF Oldham are promoted to the Championship at the end of this season.

Aké has become a somewhat hero to the Oldham fans after playing just seven games for the club. The versatility of the Dutch Under-21 international has resulted in Aké becoming a fan favourite - even amongst the likes of new signings like Andy Johnson, Vicente and Laste Dombaxe! The Dutchman has been playing regularly in the slot covering the back four, and has occasionally been put in the centre of the back four.

The defensive-midfielder averages just over seven tackles per game for the Latics in the seven starts he's had. Aké won the Man of the Match award earlier this month in the 3-0 win over Carlisle United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after assisting fellow loanee Jacob Mellis' goal in the eleventh minute of the game.

The Chelsea player spoke about a potential permanent move to Oldham saying "I'm loving my football at the minute under Mr. Scholes and the way we are playing, it wouldn't surprise me if we put a very strong push for promotion this season.

"He's got us playing a certain way and I love getting regular competitive football which I've been limited ever since I signed a professional deal with ADO Den Haag in 2005.

"Would I consider moving here for the foreseeable future? Hmm. I'd like to see where this season takes us to be honest. If we are promoted there is a possibility, however, I can't see myself playing League One football next year if I'm honest. I believe I'm a talented player and I love to impress people, but impressing at League One isn't like impressing at lets say... The Championship, Premier League, et cetera.

"I'm an ambitious person. I want to be playing at the very top, which is what Chelsea can offer, but the enjoyment factor is also swaying my career somewhat. I'm enjoying life here and I hope I continue to do so."

An excellent month, suffering only one defeat in the whole month - and even then it was against the league leaders who scraped a 1-0 win over us. The great thing about this month was that when we won, we deserved it. We are proving to be a real threat to the play-off positions and that's a threat we're happy to make of ourselves. Our playing style has set into place and we're looking comfortable - out of this league, to use a cliché.

League Table

The league table reads us as fifth placed at the end of September, only two points from automatic promotion but that gap is bound to widen at some point surely? Anywhere from mid-table upwards will defeat the press' prediction that we'll finish eighteenth come the end of the season, but we hope to go as far as we can - if that means promotion then I'll gladly take it.

We face high-flyers Peterborough in our first game of October, a game I believe we can pick up points from, definitely. Apart from them I cannot see any other potential threats, but we must always defeat what is put in front of us and many teams will be wanting to spoil our party throughout the season, so we have to make sure everything goes to plan.
