Fabio Cannavaro arrested over tax evasion claims

Fabio Cannavaro has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for breaching orders to keep out of his property after it was seized by authorities.
The 41-year-old, who played for Parma, Internazionale, Juventus and Real Madrid, and captained Italy to their 2006 World Cup triumph, has been under investigation for tax evasion. In October, authorities in Naples seized almost €1m of goods linked to Cannavaro and his wife, as well as a €180,000 yacht.

However, his failure to adhere to their ruling after he was caught going for a swim the property’s swimming pool with his wife has led to Cannavaro – was then coach of the Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande – prior to being handed a 10-month sentence. His wife, Daniela Arenoso, and his brother Paolo, who plays in Serie A for Sassuolo, were also given custodial sentences. All three have appealed and will therefore have their sentences suspended until a final judgment is made.

It has been reported that Cannavaro’s company Fd Service owes over €1m in unpaid taxes. The Italian Agency of Revenue apparently claims that FD Service underpaid on Corporation Tax, Regional Tax and VAT between 2005 and 2010.

Guangzhou chairman Liu Yongzhou has released this statement : We at Guangzhou Evergrande would like to thank Fabio Cannavaro for all the work he has done at the club, the level of football that has been played, the hardwork and dedication shown behind the scenes. We would like to wish Fabio and and family all the best in the future.

The search begins

Guangzhou Evergrande seem increasingly likely to recruit from abroad as their search for Fabio Cannavaro's replacement intensifies.
Rémi Garde, the former Lyon coach, Thomas Tuchel, previously in charge of Mainz, and St Etienne’s Christophe Galtier are all under consideration as Guangzhou work out a shortlist for a new manager.

None of the leading contenders are Chinese. Tony Popovic commands admiration inside Guangzhou, but the former Crystal Palace player is committed to remaining at Western Sydney Wanderers and feels it would be disloyal to his players to depart in the middle of a Championship push.

“I’m going nowhere,” he said on Tuesday. “I don’t want to let people here down. You’ve got to show loyalty. I’ve got a job to do here.”

If the possibility of Guangzhou changing Popovic’s mind appears virtually non-existent, Liu Yngzhou does not lack candidates as he considers appointing the yet another overseas coach of his time at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s owner has delegated the hunt for the new manager – or “head coach”, as the club term it – to Andres Innocenti, his influential chief scout, and Kang Bing, the managing director. After signing a raft of players from Brazil, Innocenti has excellent contacts in South America in particular.

Innoceni is said to have been impressed with Garde’s work at Lyon before his resignation for personal reasons. The 48-year-old former Arsenal defensive midfielder cited a combination of exhaustion and family concerns as prompting his decision to quit but Innocenti may try to persuade him a change is as good as a rest.

Tony Popovic turns down Guangzhou Evergrande, insists he's happy in Sydney

Coach Tony Popovic has turned down a role at Guangzhou

Wanderers boss Tony Popovic masterminded his side’s remarkable Asian Champions League victory on last season.

Following Western Sydney’s defeat of Guangzhou Evergrande to reach the ACL semi-finals the year before, The Daily Telegraph has learned that Popovic was approached by a trusted intermediary late last week about joining the Chinese super league champions.

It’s understood that though Popovic was flattered by the approach, he responded that as a contracted coach, any approach had to be made to Western Sydney first.

Sources in China say that in a subsequent conversation, it was made clear that Popovic’s commitment to taking the Evergrande role was essential before any formal approach was made to Western Sydney.

The former Socceroo is believed to have mapped an ideal career path as a coach that would take in a spell in Asia before moving to Europe.
Late last year he was approached by English side Norwich to succeed Chris Hughton as well as Korean side Ulsan Hyundai, but similarly knocked back both approaches.

Since Western Sydney changed ownership he is said to have forged a strong relationship with new chairman Paul Lederer, and that seems to be one of the major reasons Tony has decided to stay in Western Sydney
