As the FPL deadline draws near, here are some helpful tips on player selection.

With the likes of Petr Cech (£5.5m), Nathaniel Clyne (£5.5m), Eden Hazard (£11.5m) and Harry Kane (£9.5m) dominating FPL squad selections so far, there are plenty of other options worth considering to give you the edge this season.

Goalkeepers

Newly promoted Norwich keeper John Ruddy (£4.5m) looks like being an astute acquisition while West Ham shot-stopper Adrian (£5.0m) has some attractive home fixtures early in the season. Everton stalwart Tim Howard (£5.0m) has long been a FPL favourite and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel (£4.5m) could also be worth consideration.

Defenders

After his impressive spell at Southampton last season, new Spurs signing Toby Alderweireld (£5.0m) will be aiming to hit the ground running at White Hart Lane. AFC Bournemouth’s marauding right-back Simon Francis (£4.5m) is likely to score points at both ends of the pitch, as is Everton’s dead ball specialist Leighton Baines (£6.5m) and Man Utd’s Darmian (£5.5m).

Midfielders

Southampton’s attack-minded Sadio Mane (£8.0m) offers great value as a midfielder while West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet (£7.5m), who notched 17 assists for Marseille last season, will be hoping to continue that form in his debut BPL season. Other new signings to look out for are Man Utd’s Memphis Depay (£8.5m) and Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino (£8.5m).

Forwards

Christian Benteke’s (£8.5m) move to Anfield will be popular with FPL managers. The Liverpool striker recorded 42 goals and eight assists in his three seasons at Aston Villa. If you’re looking for a bargain, West Brom’s Rickie Lambert (£6.0m), Watford talisman Troy Deeney (£5.5m) and AFC Bournemouth hotshot Callum Wilson (£5.5m) are all worth considering.

With just three days left until the 2015/16 season kicks off, the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is now open for registration and preparations can begin.

There are already dilemmas to consider: the early availability of both Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero is in question after the pair’s involvement in the summer Copa America tournament.

The duo – who finished in the top three spots in last season’s FPL game – are now set for an extended summer break, with uncertainty already surrounding their pitch time for the opening Gameweek.

That’s just one consideration for FPL managers, who must also assess an array of new talent, jostling for a place in our squads.

The new arrivals

After seeing his side score a mere 52 goals as a result of Luis Suarez’ departure to Barcelona, Brendan Rodgers has hit the summer sales hard. The Liverpool manager has splashed out £29m on Hoffenheim’s Roberto Firmino (8.5) and acquired both James Milner (7.0) and Danny Ings (7.5) as he prepares for life without Steven Gerrard. In defence, Rodgers has also bagged Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton – available for 5.5, the right-back made more tackles than any defender in the top-flight last term.

Manchester United have drafted in the highly-rated Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven. The youngster is priced at 8.5 – the same as team-mates Juan Mata and Angel di Maria – and arrives with a reputation as a set-piece specialist, having scored more free-kicks than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues in 2014/15.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have plundered London neighbours Chelsea for a new number one. Petr Cech conceded just two goals in seven league outings last time around and has been handed a 5.5 price tag as Arsene Wenger’s side look to push on from the previous campaign’s third place finish.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has been quick to strengthen his defence over the summer. With Clyne and Toby Alderweireld set for pastures new and first-choice keeper Fraser Forster sidelined for a number of months, the Dutchman has acquired Maarten Stekelenburg (5.0) between the posts, whilst new right-back Cedric Soares is similarly priced. The Saints boast last season’s second most resilient defence, with just 33 goals against, and face only three of last season’s top seven sides in the opening 13 Gameweeks.

Swansea manager Garry Monk has raided Ligue 1 on a couple of occasions. Left winger Andre Ayew – who sets you back 7.0 – produced ten goals and three assists for Marseille in 2014/15, whilst new left-back Franck Tabanou (5.0) looks a strong rival for Neil Taylor, having served up a goal and five assists for St Etienne in the previous campaign.

West Ham United have appointed Slaven Bilic as the new man in charge after Sam Allardyce departed at the end of last season. The Hammers - who have already kicked off their campaign with a 3-0 first leg win over Lusitans in the Europa League first qualifying round – will be hoping new signing Dimitri Payet makes an instant impact. Available for 7.5, the playmaker notched 15 goals and 23 assists in his final two years at Marseille.

The promoted clubs

AFC Bournemouth prepare for their first ever season in the Premier League after clinching the Championship by just a single point from their nearest challengers, Watford. Eddie Howe’s men scored 98 times last term – more than any other side in the division – with the 6.0-priced Matt Ritchie producing 15 goals and 17 assists from midfield.

Fantasy managers will be hoping Calum Wilson (5.5) can provide value up front on the back of 20 goals and seven assists for the Cherries. In defence, raiding full-backs Simon Francis (one goal, six assists) and Tyrone Mings (one goal, four assists) offer points potential at a bargain 4.5 apiece, though the latter may take time to settle after arriving from Ipswich Town over the summer.

Watford are set for their fifth manager in the last 12 months after appointing former Atletico Madrid manager Quique Sanchez Flores to the hotseat.

The Spaniard has wasted little time in restructuring his defence, with Sebastian Prodl and Jose Holebas (both available for 4.5) arriving from Werder Bremen and Roma respectively. Prodl notched three times in the Bundesliga last term, though fellow centre-half Gabrielle Angela also offers an attacking threat, having produced two goals and four assists in 2014/15.

Troy Deeney could be the jewel in the crown, however. Priced at just 5.5, the striker produced 21 goals and nine assists last time out and is the Hornets’ number one spot-kick taker.

Norwich City make an immediate return to the top-flight after edging past Middlesbrough in the Championship Play-Off final. John Ruddy (4.5) offers a secure pair of hands between the posts for the Canaries, who will be relying on 5.5-priced midfielders Nathan Redmond and Bradley Johnson to maintain momentum from the previous campaign. Redmond produced six goals and 13 assists last time out, whilst Johnson netted 15 times and chipped in with a pair of assists.

Ones to watch

Simon Francis – the Bournemouth defender has been very kindly priced at just 4.5 for the season ahead. With manager Eddie How affording his full-backs plenty of freedom to push forward, Francis’ understanding with Matt Ritchie down the right was key to the Cherries’ title triumph and saw him create 76 chances for his team-mates – more than any defender in the Championship. Given that Bournemouth mustered 19 clean sheets in 2014/15, Francis looks a real prospect at both ends of the pitch.

Sadio Mane – an average of 204.3 minutes per goal was second only to Alexis Sanchez amongst midfielders last time around. Having cemented a regular role under Ronald Koeman towards the end of 2014/15, Mane has the potential to make a mockery of his 8.0 price tag – as evidenced by a stunning 23-point haul against Aston Villa in Gameweek 37, he’s more than capable of delivering explosive returns for Fantasy managers.

Dimitri Payet – it’s easy to see why great things are expected of West Ham’s summer signing. Not only did Payet provide 17 assists for his Marseille team-mates last season, he created an astonishing 133 chances – more than any player in Europe’s top five leagues. Priced at 7.5, Payet will be looking to take advantage of a schedule that sees the Hammers host Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Norwich in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Memphis Depay – despite finishing fourth in Louis van Gaal’s first year at the helm, Manchester United struggled in the final third and netted just 62 times. Depay’s arrival should bolster the Red Devils’ flagging attack – having served up 22 goals and five assists in his final year at PSV Eindhoven, the dead-ball specialist could prove a canny investment at a price of just 8.5.

Roberto Firmino – a total of 23 goals and 21 assists in his last two seasons at Hoffenheim highlights the potential of Liverpool’s big-money signing. Firmino will be tasked with sparking the Reds back into life after a hugely underwhelming 2014/15 campaign and with home clashes against Bournemouth, Norwich, West Ham and Aston Villa in the first seven round of fixtures, the 8.5-priced Brazilian has the chance to quickly endear himself to the Merseyside faithful.

Troy Deeney – Fantasy managers will be scouring the promoted sides for budget-friendly options after Charlie Austin scored 18 times for Queens Park Rangers last season. Watford forward Deeney may well provide the solution. Available for just 5.5, he produced 21 goals and nine assists in 2014/15 and also has spot-kick duties to further his appeal.

Three of last season’s top four teams face home comforts as the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League season prepares to get underway.

Champions Chelsea welcome Swansea City to Stamford Bridge, where Jose Mourinho’s side dropped just eight points in last year’s title-winning campaign. Manchester United entertain Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, whilst Arsenal will look to build on their Community Shield triumph as West Ham United roll up to the Emirates Stadium.

Elsewhere, Championship winners AFC Bournemouth host Aston Villa in their first ever top-flight fixture. Steve McClaren faces his first home match in charge of Newcastle United as Southampton pay visit on Sunday afternoon, Liverpool travel to Stoke City, whilst West Bromwich Albion welcome Manchester City to the Hawthorns on Monday evening.

Talking tactics

Theo Walcott was fielded up front by Arsene Wenger in Arsenal’s Community Shield win over Chelsea last weekend. With Alexis Sanchez yet to feature this summer due to his participation in the summer Copa America tournament, the Gunners boss handed Santi Cazorla and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain roles on the flanks, with Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil in the centre of the park. Priced at 9.0 and classified as a midfielder, Walcott - who provided the assist for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s winner – is owned by just 9% of Fantasy managers ahead of Sunday’s home clash with West Ham.

Manuel Pellegrini has trialled a 4-3-3 formation during Manchester City’s pre-season. With his Copa America contingent absent, the Chilean handed Raheem Sterling and David Silva the wide roles in a front three and the pair supplied three and two goals respectively over the summer. The Etihad side have since confirmed that Sergio Aguero, Silva and Samir Nasri are all expected to recover from illness in time for the trip to West Brom but bearing in mind that he hasn’t played any part of pre-season, it’s uncertain whether the 12%-owned Aguero would be deemed fit to start, with Wilfried Bony perhaps favourite to lead the line.

New signing Memphis Depay has been utilised in a central support role in Manchester United’s recent friendlies. The Dutchman scored 22 times from the left of a front three for PSV Eindhoven last season but has been moved into the middle behind lone striker Wayne Rooney in a 4-3-3 formation, with Ashley Young and Juan Mata stationed on the left and right flanks respectively. Rooney managed just 12 goals last season after featuring in central midfield on a number of occasions but the recent acquisition of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin means he will be Van Gaal’s number one striker in the season ahead.

By the numbers

With the pre-season schedule finally ending on Wednesday evening, The Scout assesses the top scoring performers over the course of the summer.

6 goals – Cameron Jerome (NOR), Odion Ighalo (WAT), Graziano Pelle (Sou), Jay Rodriguez (SOU)

4 goals – Scott Sinclair (AVL), Dwight Gayle (CPL), Romelu Lukaku (EVE), Danny Ings (LIV), Diafra Sakho (WHU), Tony Andreu (NOR)

3 goals – Jerrell Sellars (AVL), Junior Stanislas (BOU), Patrick Bamford (CPL), Jamie Vardy (LEI), Raheem Sterling (MCI), Juanmi (SOU), Troy Deeney (WAT), Brown Ideye (WBA)

Promoted pair Norwich City and Watford both boast a couple of in-form attackers. The Canaries’ Cameron Jerome and Tony Andreu have found the net on six and four occasions respectively, though only the former – priced at a mere 5.0 – looks a reliable starter as the lone striker in Alex Neil’s first XI.

Watford’s Odion Ighalo has scored six times over the summer. Listed as a forward, he’s started in the attacking midfield three behind Lloyd Deeney in their 4-2-3-1 formation. Deeney, who has notched three times in pre-season, is the more expensive of the pair at 5.5 to 5.0.

Southampton forwards Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez have netted six times apiece. The latter has just returned from long-term injury, though, and Ronald Koeman has conceded Rodriguez is likely to be eased back into competitive action. At a price of 8.0, Pelle looks the best-placed to take advantage of a schedule which sees the Saints face only three of last year’s top seven in the first 13 Gameweeks.

Aston Villa’s Scott Sinclair has netted four times over pre-season. At a cost of just 5.0, the winger looks to have earned a place in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI ahead of clashes with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Leicester City and West Brom in the first six Gameweeks.

Raheem Sterling has made an immediate impact at new club Manchester City. Available for 9.0, Sterling’s three–goal haul was more than any premium priced midfielder over the summer period, whilst he also supplied a pair of assists in a 4-2 defeat to Stuttgart.

West Ham’s Diafra Sakho and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy offer Fantasy managers some in-form mid-price options up front. Setting you back 6.5, the former has notched four times during pre-season and has four very kind home matches in the first seven rounds of fixtures. The 6.0-priced Vardy has scored on three occasions and has quickly impressed under new manager, Claudio Ranieri.

Ones to watch

Robert Huth – a home clash with travel-sick Sunderland offer the Leicester centre-half a strong chance of points at both ends of the pitch. Available for 4.5, Huth’s aerial threat should pose problems to a Black Cats side that scored just 15 goals on the road last season.

Matt Ritchie – priced at 6.0, the Bournemouth playmaker looks excellent value at home to Aston Villa. Ritchie produced 15 goals and 17 assists in the Championship last season and faces a defence that conceded more than two goals per game under Tim Sherwood in 2014/15.

Sadio Mane – a favourite of The Scout’s, Mane’s three-goal blitz against Aston Villa in Gameweek 37 last season is still fresh in the memory. His pace and eye for goal could be too much for a patched-up Newcastle rearguard on Sunday afternoon.

Theo Walcott – after scoring a hat-trick in the final day of 2014/15, Walcott has kept his place up front for Arsenal’s subsequent FA Cup final and Community Shield wins over Aston Villa and Chelsea. He looks set to be selected ahead of Olivier Giroud once again and will fancy his chances at home to a West Ham side that managed just two clean sheets on the road in the previous campaign.

Romelu Lukaku – the big Belgian welcomes Watford to Goodison Park in fine form, having found the net four times over the summer. With the fixtures turning against the Toffees from Gameweek 2 onwards, Lukaku’s display against the Hornets will be key to grabbing the points.
