Bolton’s Month of March

Bolton vs Fulham

Bolton kicked off the month on the first day with a match against Fulham in the Macron stadium. It would be more of a match of Fulham throwing themselves into heavy tackles in an attempt to slow the Bolton midfield down. It would prove success for a large portion of the game but would see Fulham reprimanded three separate time for hard tackles as they committed a staggering 20 fouls, and would frustrate fans of the game as it became a stop and go affair.

The dead-lock wouldn’t be broken until on the hour Emmanuel Ledesma line up over a free kick and cannoned a power shot towards the upper v. Unfortunately it careened off the cross bar and into the box where Zach Clough was quickest off the mark to tap the ball home for his 11th goal of the campaign.

Bolton vs Tottenham FA Cup 6th Round

Bolton’s next game would see them drawn vs Tottenham in the FA Cup in the Macron Stadium. An influx of people to the game would be expected with a sell-out hopeful, especially after chairmen Ken Hodcroft made it known he expected the funds would help the club immensely. In the end, Macron was only 25 empty seats from full.

Bolton played a hard game against Tottenham, putting the premier league club and European hopeful under pressure a number of times, but Tottenham played as were expected and put Holden’s men under a lot of pressure as well.

With both teams managing to get double digit numbers in shots, it would have almost been expected to be a draw. But in the 55th minute Tottenham found the breakthrough, with striker Leo Baptistao received a peach of a cross from right back Mario controlled it with a touch and unleased a vicious shot pass Andy Lonergan into the upper right corner of the net.

The match would continue to be a back and forth affair, but neither team could find the net again and Holden’s squad fell to their first defeat under his leadership.

Bolton vs Ipswich

Bolton would play a very good first half against Ipswich in Portman Road. With David Wheater finding the net for his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute with a thumping header off a corner that the defense could do nothing about.

Bolton followed that up quickly, in the extra time of the first half with a lovely series of passes with the ball falling to striker George Illiev, played to allow Clough a rest, who beat 2 defenders and drew the keeper out of the box before slotting it past the outstretched Bialkowski.

The second half was a different story. With Ipswich scoring almost straight from the kickoff in the 47th minute. Martin Cranie received the ball on the wing with space and time to play a long looping cross towards the far post that evaded both Oscar Threlkeld and David Wheater to fall perfectly at the feet of Isaiah Brown for a lovely goal.

Holden didn’t look amused, as it was a simple goal to stop and Jordan Willis was substituted shortly after for the mistake. Ipswich would play hard the entire second half, putting Bolton under intense pressure and forcing Lonergan into a number of fine saves. However they could not find the second goal and Bolton would see their way home with the 3 points after the loss to Tottenham midweek.

Bolton vs Charlton

Both teams would come out of the blocks attacking like there was no tomorrow. With Emmanuel Ledesma drawing a penalty very early on, in the 3rd minute and then stepping up to take and score it in the 4th minute. Bolton would continue to press, scoring once again in the 15th minute when Mark Davies played Southampton loanee Jack Stobbs through on goal for his first goal in a Wanderer shirt.

Three minutes later it would seem Charlton would be making a fight out of it, as Marc-Antoine Fortune got onto the end of a deep early cross to smash the ball past Elliott Parish. Almost 10 minutes later Liam Trotter would give away a penalty for a bad challenge in the box and Johnnie Jackson would step up to score the spot kick to equalize for Charlton.

Fans of both sides would have been forgiven for expecting a 2-2 draw going into halftime, however Bolton would find the perfect time to strike. Ledesma lofted a wonderfully weighted ball into the 18 yard box where it found Mark Davies unmarked who one time volleyed it along the ground and into the low near corner of the net.

Both teams would peter out in the second half, with much of the energy expended in the attempted comeback and full quashing of it in the first half it the only thing of note being a yellow card in the 56th minute.

Bolton vs Wigan.

Bolton would travel to the DW Stadium to take on their fierce rivals Wigan. Things would not start well for Bolton as they fell to an early goal in the 6th minute. Oriol Riera rose higher than David Wheater to meet a James Perch cross and smash it into the goal.

Bolton would work hard to claw their way back into the match. Especially under the whip of Holden’s harsh and scathing leadership from the sidelines. It took some clever foot work by Ledesma to take advantage of Andrew Taylor who brought the Argentinian winger down inside the box. Ledesma stepped up and sunk the spot kick for his 2nd goal in as many games.

4 minutes later Bolton had turned the deficient completely around. Zach Clough received the ball from Mark Davies, controlled it, back heeled it to Lloyd Isgrove, who played the one two back to Clough through the defense. Clough collected the ball and smashed a shot passed the stranded Ali Al-Habsi.

Once again, shortly before halftime, Bolton found the net. Emmanuel Ledesma lined up a wonderful free kick that flew past the helpless Al-Habsi and into the goal from 20 yards.

The second half it was much of the same, as Emmanuel Ledesma stepped up to the spot to take another two penalties. Scoring both, one in the 64th and another in the 68th minute. Oriol Riera would managed to score one more, but it was only consolation for the home fans who found themselves well and truly beaten at the end of the match with only 10 men on the pitch and 5 goals against them.

Bolton vs Huddersfield

Bolton’s final match of the month would see them take on Huddersfield in the Macron stadium. Bolton would get off to a decent start with the Captain Jay Spearing, freshly fit from injury, reacting fastest after an Emmanuel Ledesma free kick was parried wide by Alex Smithies, to tuck home from a hard angle in the 14th minute.

Lloyd Isgrove, also freshly fit from injury would find his theme of the season continue as he struggled off the field in the 23rd minute with a damaged heel that will keep him out for at least another week to be replaced by Simon Dawkins, another player returning from injury.

Shortly thereafter Bolton would find the net again in the 35th minute. Ledesma lofted a lovely ball in towards David Wheater who climbed highest and met it with his head. It looked a certain goal, but kissed the crossbar going almost straight up, and then straight down towards the sprawled out goal keeper. A rush of bodies and a panicked clearance attempt by Murray Wallace led to him putting the ball into his own goal.

The rest of the match would prove uneventful, as Bolton locked down their midfield and played to finish out with three points and to avoid further injuries to what many have deemed a fragile squad this year.

Bolton Wanderer’s Player of the Month

Emmanuel Ledesma had another great month running racking up an impressive 5 goals and as many assists to lead Bolton further up the table and collecting the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award. Many are wondering if the 27 year old uncapped Argentinian can continue his run of form. He continues to eat up defense after defense with his clever moves on the ball, and his wonderful ability to place both free kicks and corners where he wants them when he wants them.

Bolton’s meteoric rise up the table continued in March under Stuart Holden as he led them to a perfect month in the league despite his first bitter defeat to Tottenham.

With playoffs almost a certainty and promotion even a possibility Bolton fans are celebrating the day Neil Lennon left and Stuart Holden made the transition from player to coach.

Bolton vs Middlesbrough

Bolton started the month against Middlesbrough and they started the month well. With the team flying down the pitch and finding the net through Zach Clough in only the 5th minute. Emmanuel Ledesma played the ball back and center to Mark Davies, who one touched it up to Clough who, with a touch controlled it and a second smashed it into the goal for his 13th goal of the season.

The rest of the first half would pass quietly with little of note occurring. And as the whistle blew and the teams headed for the dressing rooms Holden was smiling, his team were on a run. Thing’s couldn’t be better.

The second half was much the same, with not much of not passing between either club as it became a midfield battle for possession more than a game about shooting and scoring. However, Bolton’s wonderful young striker Zach Clough would find a brace in the 85th minute after a lovely sweeping forward run by Dean Moxey was cut out, the ball fell to Marc Tierney who played a lovely cross in from deep and Zach Clough met it viciously with a volley for his 14th goal.

Bolton vs Sheffield Wednesday

Bolton would again get off to a flying start vs Wednesday’s, and again it would be Clough to score the early goal. This time in the 3rd minute. A series of lovely quick passes led to Clough laying a lovely ball to Ledesma who beat his defender into the box and saw Clough alone and slotted the ball straight to him. Clough picked up his head and smashed it passed Chris Kirkland.

32 minutes later Clough would complete his second brace in two games. With Mark Davies lofting a lovely ball onto the top of the box that Clough calmly let fall onto his left foot with another ferocious volley that smashed into the upper corner of the net leaving Kirkland stranded.

Bolton, however would not play up to the show of the first half and even allowed Sheffield Wednesday’s to claw a goal back shortly into the second half. Jerome Sinclair took advantage of a defense error from Oscar Threlkeld to score a hard shot up into upper corner past Andy Lonergan.

Bolton and Sheffield would continue to press for another goal, but the match would finish 2-1.

Bolton Vs Nottingham Forest

Both teams started the game brightly, with both keepers making saves early in the match. Unfortunately, early on in the match Dean Moxey suffered a knock and was replaced by Marc Tierney. This would lead to Forest pressing for a large section of the first half as Bolton attempted to cope with the loss. However, Eliot Parrish shone, making save after save. Towards the end of the first half Bolton began to find their rhythm again, and pressed. Drawing three quick chances from set plays in succession. The final of which lead to Simon Dawkins finding the net for the Trotters in the 44th minute. Picking up on the loose ball after a wonderful Ledesma half-volley was barley saved by an acrobatic one handed save from Dimitar Evtimov, only for Dawkins to steer home the rebound with ease.

Bolton went into the half 1-0 up, but either team could have scored 2 or three in the first half. Forest came out of the blocks steaming in the second half. Drawing a couple of early corners which they failed to convert and forcing Bolton Captain Jay Spearing off with a knock in the 57th minute. Forest continued to press until Bolton found some reserve of inner strength. Perhaps at the behest of the manager Stuart Holden standing at the sidelines. Bolton drew a couple of corner kicks just after the hour mark and with a set piece from the training ground Zach Clough converted for Bolton’s second goal of the game.

Ledesma lofted a lovely ball towards the near post, but David Wheater failed to get there and the ball was haphazardly cleared. Dawkins picked up on the loose ball just outside the area, turned, found the retreating David Wheater, who in turn found Clough just inside the area. Clough controlled with his right foot, and smacked the ball into the opposite far corner in the 80th minute. Postage stamp shot. Unstoppable. And the young lad was clearly delighted.

However, it wouldn’t be all smiles for the Wanderers, as Gulbrandsen drew a penalty from a sloppy tackle from Marc Tierney. Assombalonga stepped up and converted the spot kick to claw one back in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late for a spirited Forest side.

Bolton Vs Sunderland

Bolton completed dominated in this match. In the 18th minute Darren Pratley beat his marker to the ball on a corner kick and his header beat the keeper and found its way into the net. Bolton would continue to press for the majority of the match taking 19 shots, with 9 on target but Pratley’s early effort would be the deciding difference between the two clubs. Sunderland only managed 5 shots, and only one of them tested Eliot Parrish.

Bolton vs Leeds

Leeds and Bolton played a very evenly matched game, if only because of the efforts of Marco Silvestri who played an incredible game for Leeds in the sticks. Making 9 saves from the 10 shots that tried him. Bolton dominated the actual proceedings, taking a staggering 20 shots, but couldn’t find the net in the first half thanks to Silvestri who was simply everywhere. Holden and his lads must have been wondering what it would take to beat the 25 year old Italian.

They found out shortly after the start of the second half. When Bolton managed to draw a corner, which did not go off as they had hoped, but the defense was unable to cope with the Wanderer’s forward pressure and Vela flicked the ball out of the crowded box to Ledesma out on the left flank. Ledesma controlled, held up play and watched the plays develop. Vela, seeing this, drifted off of his marker and into the box where Ledesma found him with a lovely lofted chip. Vela took a touch to settle the ball, and with his second sent a low shot in towards the near post. Silvestri was almost equal to it, but the power of the shot beat the strength of Silvestri’s hand for Bolton to go ahead in the 51st minute. Bolton would continue to press, especially 8 minutes later when Randolph Austin drew his second yellow and put Leeds a man down, but couldn’t find a second goal.

Bolton vs Watford

Bolton’s final game of the season came against fellow playoff contender Watford and would likely be a very tough game for Bolton despite their wonderful winning run. Many fans clamored into the Macron Stadium for the final game which, if won, could see Bolton slide up to second place in style and put themselves back into the Premier League.

Bolton started the match brightly, dominating for the first half of an hour and forcing the Watford keeper Johnathan Bond into several clever saves. However, Watford would be the first to score. In the 31st minute a rough foul saw Watford given a free kick on the left flank of Bolton’s defensive half. Lewis McGugan lofted in a lovely ball toward the 8 yard box and David Wheater was along to make the clearance. It was a shoddy clearance, and fell to the feet of the crashing deliverer turned scorer as Lewis McGugan picked up the ball on the edge of the area, beat the defense with his momentum and tapped home passed Andy Lonergan.

Bolton’s players, who haven’t yet lost a league game really didn’t like the sense of being behind, especially in front of their home fans and equalized a mere 7 minutes later. A wonderful series of midfield play between Josh Vela, Mark Davies, and supporting fullback Marc Tierney saw Lloyd Isgrove receive the ball with his back to goal just outside the Watford box. He took a touch back towards his half, and then cut in sharply back towards the Watford goal leaving two Watford defenders stupefied. He rifled a curling effort from just inside the penalty arc, a low skipper of a shot with plenty of power that left Bond sprawling for nothing as it slide past the post to nestle into the net.

The fans were clearly buoyed by Isgrove’s third goal of the season, and the Welsh attacking midfielder was looking more and more like he had his rhythm back after returning from a number of injuries this season. The momentum would see Bolton continue to press for the remainder of the first half but they were unrewarded for their toils as the teams went into the break at 0’s.

Both teams came to play in the second half, with Watford making a few early changes in the half to their squad. These changes saw themselves fully implemented in the 62nd minute when halftime sub Alain Traore received a pass from fellow halftime sub Odion Ighalo about 40 yards from goal and hit the ball as it arrived first time toward the Bolton goal. Traore was rewarded with one of the goals of the season as the ball curled wickedly passed the stunned and out of position Lonergan and into the near post upper v. Holden was furious, rising from the bench to curse Lonergan’s lack of concentration, but the fans were still behind their home team.

Bolton reciprocated the fans faith only 4 minutes later, working the ball quickly down the right wing between Ledesma and Mark Davies who found Clough running at his defender just outside the Watford 18. Clough cleverly worked two of the Watford defenders, cutting back towards his own goal before cleverly clipping the ball past them and into the path of Ledesma, whose overlapping run was spotted late by the full back. Ledesma received the ball on the line of the goal box and with a single fluid motion smashed the ball into the roof of the net for the equalizer.

There was a roar from around the stadium as the net rippled. Holden scratched his chin, deep in thought and called for his team to do more. And they battled. Bolton fought. They earned chance after chance, but Watford, though a combination of defensive commitment and luck managed to hold them at bay.

The clock was ticking and it was already deep into stoppage time when Oscar Threlkeld drew a foul from almost the same place that Watford had managed to score from in the first half. Ledesma lined up over the ball, watching the players jostle for position in the box. Finally, after what seemed an age, the ref whistled for play to resume and the Macron stadium held its breath as Ledesma wound up. The ball drifted in towards Miguel Layun, but suddenly David Wheater rose up to meet it. He stretched high, and flicked the ball goal wards. It caught his head poorly and looped high into the air. It was over the keeper Johnathan Bond, and coming down towards the goal. The entire stadium erupted into song as the ball careened off the underside of the bar and into the goal. “We are coming back! We are coming back! Stuart Holden is our man and we are coming back!” was all that could be heard in the Macron stadium, and it lasted until the dying embers of the night when the last of the supporters made they ways out of the stadium elated.

Bolton’s stunning rise up the table continued under Stuart Holden, who has yet to suffer a league defeat. Climbing an awe inspiring 9 places from 11th to 2nd and sealed their way back into the Premier league when a number of pundits said after the exit of Neil Lennon that no one could do much better.

Player of the Month

Zach Clough

The youngster had a great month, scoring 5 goals in 6 games and snagging one all vital assist in the exciting Watford game. If he continues on this path Bolton have a great striker in their ranks that they will be looking to hold onto and hoping he can continue his level of play in the Premier league next season. Undoubtedly Holden has been ecstatic with the core of young players at his disposal.
Congratulations on promotion, Bolton back to the Premier League and looking strong! Clough looks to be an amazing player, hopefully he can continue to play like he did this season.
Clough is a straight-up stud in this version. Love the potential of the kid. Congratulations on promotion, I hope to achieve the same!
I'm very happy with Clough this season, as were a number of people as you will see in my end of season awards post.

Tenthreeleader I'm more then pleased with promotion and I have no doubt from following your story you can do the same!

Bolton Announce Player Awards for the Season.

Bolton today have held an award ceremony to honor their best players of the season, and to honor the new manager Stuart Holden. Firstly Bolton manager Stuart Holden took the stage to speak about his short tenure at the club.

“Bolton has been a home to me for many years, some of those were tough years for me personally, dealing with injuries and rehab. But being a part of this club, it’s spirit and it’s fight, has bred into a desire to win, and to win here. We’ve been fantastic this season from the moment I took over to the last breathless game against Watford and I’m so pleased with the way the club accepted me turning from player to manager. The lads accepted me quickly, as if the transition was almost a give in. But enough of about the club. Today is about the players. We have two wonderful individual awards given to us by the F.A. to present to two of our stand-out players.”

“First up we have a player brought in by Neil Lennon as a free transfer at the beginning of the season. Lennon didn’t play him often in his preferred position, and when I arrived I saw his penchant for attacking and gave him the reins, and he did not disappoint. For that, and his 10 goals coupled with his 15 assists this season the F.A. has seen fit to give the Player of the Year of the award to Emmanuel Ledesma! Ledey has been amazing this season, and I know he and the fans look forward to seeing him do the same in the Premier league. Come on up here, Emmanuel, you really deserve this."

http://s614.photobucket.com/user/clearwater1521/media/f41708c3-c9e1-4221-b4b8-929622af1674_zpsazo3jz00.jpg.html

After accepting the award Ken Hodcroft took the stage to speak.

“When I took over the club, I was happy with the man in charge in Neil Lennon. However, when he came to me and told me he wanted to join QPR…. I was aghast. He’s done well with the Rangers, no doubt, but I feel a gap occurred between the club and the supporters when he left so suddenly. And then Stuart Holden stepped up, and boy, did he step up. He’s done a wonderful job for us, continuing to play the style of football with the type of players we’d like to see playing it. I can’t believe how well he’s done. Enough about the manager though, we have another FA sanctioned award to give out. This one goes to a young player who rises to the challenge of a starting spot and makes it his own. This year, we’re very lucky to give it to our very own Zach Clough, who’s wonderful run of form has seen him earn the Young Player of the Year award! Zach, well done lad!”

Clough rose to accept the award with a shy smile, the amount of supporters in the small press conference room seemed to be getting to the young lad. But when he turned to begin his walk about Stuart Holden put a hand on his shoulder and turned him around, “No so quick, Zach. The fans also have an award they give out every year for their favorite player. With so many wonderful faces around the club many wouldn’t have been surprised had it been Emmanuel, or Josh or maybe even Oscar… but the fans made their choice, and I can’t help but agree. Mr. Clough, you are also the fans choice for player of the year! Congrats, enjoy the vacation and come back with some more goals in those boots!”

With that, the awards ceremony was concluded and the supporters, players and staff mingled, sharing drinks and words. The entire room buzzing with a sense of joy. “We are coming back!” Was oft repeated over the course of the night. Bolton Wanderers, are indeed, coming back to the Premier League.

It’s no longer a promise, it’s a statement.
Bolton announce 4 signings on Opening Day of the Transfer Window

Manager Stuart Holden has splashed some of the cash early on this summer spending 5.75 million pounds between the four players Holden has dished out on some serious cash where Bolton are concerned and Bolton supporters will be anxious to see what kind of an edge this adds to their club in the premiership.

The Wanderers New Quartet.

Harlee Dean
24 year old Englishman Harlee Dean arrives on a £1.09M deal from Championship side Brentford. Dean, a center back by trade, has had a long career in England already, making 253 appearances for multiple English clubs. He made a combined 173 appearance for Brentford over five years, helping them to promotion in 13/14 with some solid defensive performances.

Jérémy Hélan

24 year old French left back Jérémy Hélan joins from Sheffield Wednesdays for a fee rumored to be £1.39M. Hélan, who joined Wednesdays from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee in 2012 is a physical beast and will provide some serious competition for Bolton’s weaker side of the pitch. He’s made 157 appearances thus far in his career, making the majority of those in a 4 year stint at his former club.

Igor Vetokele

Bolton have snapped up the leading goal scorer in the Championship last season from Charlton, Igor Vetokele. Igor, also 24 years old, is a natural goal scorer, smashing 23 goals in for Charlton last season in 44 appearances. Igor joined Charlton for a fee of around £2.5M so Wanderers will feel their paltry sum of £1.8M a coup of a signing. Vetokele has made 149 appearances in his career scoring 59 goals.

Wesley Foderingham

25 year old English goalkeeper Wesley Foderingham joins Bolton from Coventry after spending only one season with the club. Coventry fans will undoubtedly be happy at receiving a large fee than they paid only dishing out £625,000 Bolton have paid them a whopping £1.5M for the goal keepers services. Ex-Fulham youth player, Foderingham has made 250 career appearances only keeping a worrying 23 clean sheets. When asked about this stat, Holden said, ”If you look at goals, they are not always a goal keepers fault. In Wesley’s case, looking at the teams he’s played for and the defenses he’s alongside it’s not surprising he would allow a few goals. What matters is he provides competition for both Andy and Eliot who will relish the opportunity.”

Bolton snap up two on free transfers.

Bolton have completed the signing of two internationally capped players for no fee. Holden has made some shrewd decisions this summer, adding youth with the cash and some depth from the free agent market.

The first of the two players to agree to a deal is ex-Bulgarian international Wellington Brito Da Silva, or as he is affectionately known, Tom. Tom has joined from Ba?ak?ehir in Turkey for a free transfer. Having made his international debut in 2014 vs Wales, Tom may be hoping a move to the Premier league can reignite his stagnating international career.

Tom

The second player to join is a current Surinamese international player, Diego Biseswar, he has made 20 appearances for his nation scoring 4 goals. He joins from Kayserispor, also in Turkey. Biseswar can play a number of positions across the midfield, but is likely to play on the left side of Bolton’s attack, where he will provide competition for both Rob Hall and Lloyd Isgrove. Biseswar is only 28 years old, so he is moving to the Premier League in the prime of his career.

Diego Biseswar

Bolton also release current pre-season schedule.

Pre-Season Results

Bolton played a total of 8 pre-season games and only failing to win 3 of them. The only real disappointing result was a slumping defeat to Charlton. Otherwise it was a successful pre-season, with more of it being focused on tactics and fitness than the actual results.

Clough also did this in pre-season during our 7-0 drubbing of Carlisle.

Bolton’s Premier League return will start In a week. Hosting Chelsea. Undoubtedly a very tough game for the Trotters, and a real test for Holden and his lads as they take on Chelsea an newly appointed manager Diego Simeone.

Player’s of the Preseason

Zach Clough and Diego Biseswar

Clough had a great pre-season scoring 3 goals and chipping in with 6 assists. Clough looks to be in great form for the clubs return to the EPL.

Biseswar has come in and played like he belongs here this preseason. Scoring an incredible 5 goals, including a hat trick vs Carlisle, and chipping in with 3 assists, including the lovely cross for Clough’s bicycle kick goal.

Bolton’s First Month Back

Bolton have a very tough first month. Taking on Chelsea, Arsenal and Southampton as well as an undetermined opponent in the Capital One Cup. Not many fans will be expecting Bolton to get many points in their first 3 league games.
Congrats on promotion, and that is a pretty rough first two games indeed. Also excellent looking bike goal from Clough!
Not the easiest of starts, but with a bit of luck and with those signings you might get something out of those two matches. Good luck in the Premier League!
