A great player wasted in the end after he sustained his injury and he never returned to his best, a real shame.

The 2020 Suomen Cup final once again finds Klubi in the final, this time they will be facing KuPS. HJK had a relatively easy road to the final and are looking to win their first cup since 2014. Here is a brief recap of the action this season. Will HJK finally win a Suomen Cup or will their drought continue?


Klubi entered the competition at the Sixth Round and made a good start to the tournament as they crushed PK-35 Vantaa 4-1 courtesy of goals from Lucas Lingman (2), Ilmari Ylönen and Julien Benhaim. Pk-35 had a really rough day at the office and could not find a way to beat their Veikkausliiga counterparts. This victory gave Klubi an opportunity to face SJK.


The Quarter Final match against SJK was set up to become a classic as HJK were looking to avenge their loss in the Veikkausliiga Liigacup final from earlier in the season. In this butting rivalry Klubi would get the last laugh with a 2-0 victory with goals form Lucas Lingman and Juho Hiltunen. Despite the score line SJK did not look ready to play that day.


The Semi Final proved to be an easy fixture for HJK as they walked over IFK Mariehhamn 3-1. Juho Hiltunen’s hot streak continued as he propelled the team to success as he scored 2 goals. The other goal was scored by Mikko Kuningas. For IFK Mariehhamn they had a valent effort with scoring one goal from Erik Arvidsson.

Klubi win first Suomen Cup of the decade

Klubi continued having great year in on Saturday here in Helsinki, completing a the first double of the new decade with a hard-earned and ultimately knife-edge 2-1 victory over Kuopion Palloseura in the Suomen Cup final. After six years without a victory in the cup final they have finally gotten over the hump in manager Kévin Gauthier's first season here in Finland.

The supporters who traveled to the Kouvolan keskusurheilukenttä in Kouvola saw a helter-skelter opening with chances at both ends, but Gauthier’s men gained the upper hand after the break when Juho Hiltunen opened up the score with a beautiful goal in the 59th-minute. KuPS would answer right away with a goal of their own in the 61st-minute. With the score tied at one both clubs were looking to end the stalemate. Ten minutes later Giorgi Murdashvili would score what would be the game winning goal.

HJK’s 13th Suomen Cup finishes up the silverware for the club in 2020, in which they finished the Veikkausliiga a few weeks earlier and lost in the Veikkausliiga Liiga Cup final back in March. Klubi have two more matches remaining this season, the first will be away at SJK on 18 October and the final home match of the season will take place on 25 October against VPS.

September Review

The final full month of matches in 2020 was very exciting for Klubi as they were crowned champions in early September and a Suomen Cup victory at the end. For Klubi it was a very enjoyable month with six matches, five that were from the league and one in the form of the cup. With September at a close Klubi are now 23 points in front of IFK Mariehhamn.

The month began with a 4-0 victory over Kuopion Palloseura where in this match Klubi clinched the league title. After that the three game home stand would end with a 3-0 victory over 12th placed Jaro.On a two game road trip Klubi would split the two matches with a loss against TPS and a victory over FC Ilves. HJK and FC Ilves meet once again in the next week to finish out September Veikkausliiga with a 2-0 victory. At the end of September Klubi would capture their first Suomen Cup title since 2014.



Player of the Month:


Julien Benhaim was the star player of the month. His hard work and creative play helped our strikers out in scoring. He was also active in the goal column scoring two.

Managers Thoughts:
I got my eleventh trophy of my career with the cup victory!!! I really felt like September was a great month even with that loss I feel we still played lights out. It is going to be nice that in October we only have two matches. Well on the player front I have a feeling soon I will be getting loads of calls for both Julien and Juho. I really hope I can keep these guys around but sometimes this sport doesn't allow that. Well time to finish the year off!!

What to look forward to in October:
The final month of play will see Klubi in two matches. The first will be away against SJK on 18 October. Finally on 25 October come join us at the Sonera Stadium to celebrate the 2020 season, as Klubi takes on VPS in the final match of the season. After the match concludes the trophy presentation will take place.
