1st October 2012
The International Olympic Committee were rocked last night as they received a formal application from the City of Leeds to be considered as hosts for the 2024 Olympic Games. With the London Olympic Games having finished just over a month ago, few were expecting another UK city to apply to host another Games in the not too distant future.
The Olympic bid is said to be backed by billionaire investor Dean Herbert who has family ties to the city, with Leeds' bid estimated to be worth around £8 billion. Herbert has a reputation for investment in sport, through his links to the Aspire Academy in Qatar and his work on the Beijing Olympic Park. He has stated that he wants to bring world class Olympic sports to the city and put it firmly on the map.
If successful, Leeds will become the first UK city outside of London to host the Games, with London having been a host 4 times including 2012.
