Allegri was born in Livorno; designed as an "Ideal town" by Bernardo Buontalenti.
Playing days -
Allegri was a midfielder who spent his career playing for various Italian clubs, including two spells with his hometown club Livorno (29 apps 1985 – 1988 Serie C1; 32 apps 1989 – 1990 Serie C2).
His best spell was at Pescara (64 apps 1991-1993 Serie B promoted, Serie A relegated) this would earn him a move to Cagliari who would go on to the UEFA Cup SF’s in 1993-94 (46 apps 1993-1995), Perugia, Padova and Napoli followed, before a return to Pescara (46 apps 1998-2000 Serie B).
Brief spells at Pistoiese (18 apps 2000-2001 SerieB) and Aglianese (32 apps 2001-2003 Serie C2) before his retirement in 2003.

Naughty naughty -

In 2001, Allegri was given a one year ban for his involvement in match fixing for a Coppa Italia match in 2000.

*During his early managerial days he was banned for 3 months after becoming an Udinese coach while still under contract with his previous side.

Managerial Career -

Allegri has so far managed 8 clubs in his 16 year managerial career -

He started off with Aglianese, the final club of his playing career. This only lasted one year before a switch to SPAL, also for just one season.

Next up was Grosseto in 2005, were he only managed 11 games (3 wins, 5 draws, 3 defeats) before the chop in October. He was quickly back in the job at Grosseto lasting 17 games (4 wins, 9 draws, 4 defeats) but he was ultimately sacked again in October 2006!

17th July 2007 - was were his career really took off. He took Serie C1 side Sassuolo to Serie B for the first time in their history! But after the first real success of his 5 years career he moved on to the ambitious Cagliari on a 12-month deal, with Massimo Cellino as owner and president who had gone through 19 managers since 1992.

The pressure was on early after losing his first 6 games in all competitions! Despite these problems he was given a 2-year extension in December after climbing to mid-table. At the end of the 2008/09 season Cagliari finished 9th (highest position in 15 years) and he won the Panchina d’Oro (Serie A coach of the year) ahead of Jose Mourinho!

He was sacked the following season after just 2 points from his final 9 games, ending 16th and 9pts from relegation.
Sackings are part and parcel of management in Italian football. You aren't written of if it doesn't work out.
And this would end up being the making of him…
A difficult relationship between Leonardo and Berlusconi condemned him to the sack after just one season after taking over from Ancelotti.

On 25th June 2010, Allegri was officially appointed as the new manager of Milan!

Allegri won his first Serie A title and Milan’s first Scudetto since 2004 and ended a 5-year run from Inter.
SF’s Coppa Italia and L16 CL.

A new contract until the end of 2013/14 was agreed in January of the 2011/12, he could only add a Supercoppa and a 2nd place finish (4pts behind an unbeatable Juventus) that season.
SF’S Coppa Italia and QF’s CL.

In the summer of 2012, Allegri laid out his plans to coach for just 10 more years (55 in 2022) due to the stresses involved in the job, hoping to manage the national side before retiring. And you could see why with just 2 wins from the opening 8 games he was under pressure again. A 3rd place finish 15pts behind Juve, QF’s Coppa Italia and L16 CL meant many thought this would be the end of Allegri at Milan, after dropping league position each season (partly down to poor transfers), but he remained to start 2013/14.

In December 2013, after just 4 wins from 17, Allegri told Gazzetta dello Sport "Of course this is my last Christmas at A.C. Milan". He wanted to see out the remainder of the season and his contract but he wouldn’t…

He was sacked on the 13th January 2014 after a 4-3 loss at Sassuolo and the team lying in 11th!

The downfall at Milan was not necessarily down to Allegri with high profile sales in the summer of 2012 including the likes of Thiago Silva and Ibrahimović joining the 'project' at PSG.

Surprisingly Seedorf took over and reached 8th, QF’S Coppa Italia and L16 CL.

11th March 2014 Atlético Madrid 4-1 Milan – The last time Milan competed at the highest level of European football!
Juventus – The Glory Days

16th July 2014 Allegri was appointed manager of Juventus, but he wasn’t what the fans and members necessarily wanted. Nobody was good enough after Conte; who had taken them back to the summit of Italian football with 3 consecutive titles (11/12 Champions for 1st time since 2003, unbeaten 84pts for 1st time in 38 game season; 13/14 102pts for the 1st time).

2014 – 2019 (5 seasons)

14/15 – 90 minutes from a treble!
After winning Serie A handsomely and Coppa Italia, Juventus went into their first CL final since 2003 (0-0; 3-2 Milan pens), but the loss of Chiellini didn’t help in their quest to overcome MSN, and in time added on Barca’s counter-attack ended in Neymar slotting it under Buffon and finishing off the tie 3-1!
Juventus would fail for the 6th time in the final (RECORD). But it was still at time of optimism for fans after Conte’s side hadn’t made it through the group stage the previous year (Real M 16, Galatasaray 7, Juventus 6).

15/16 – Big summer of change for Juventus as Pirlo, Vidal, Tevez, Coman and Llorente all leave with Khedira, Sandro, Dybala, Zaza and Mandzukic replacing big players that took them so close to a treble.
It took them a while to get going in the league with 4 defeats in the opening 10 games, but they eventually topped Serie A from M25, finishing with 91pts.
Coppa Italia was won in extra time vs Milan, after a disappointing R16 defeat in the CL vs Bayern (6-4agg), coming from 2-0 down in the first leg at home to draw 2-2 and squandering an early 2-0 lead at the Allianz (Muller took it to ET after a last minute equaliser).

16/17Higuain was the big signing of the summer after a €90m move from nearest challenges Napoli (3rd most expensive transfer in the world at the time), but Dani Alves came in on a free and Pjanic was snapped from Roma. Pogba moved to Manchester United for an all-time record for highest football transfer fee at €105 million!
It was a historic season for ‘The Old Lady’ as they won a 6th consecutive league title (Record) and 3rd consecutive Coppa Italia (Record), before a controversial 4-1 defeat in the CL Final (2nd in 3 years) with an amazing start to the game but Madrid quickly cheated to victory (Ramos notably).
Unfortunately Buffon lost in his 3rd final (2003, 2015, 2017) and Juve 5th consecutive.

4 days later Allegri extended his contract until June 2020!

17/18 - Juventus introduced their new logo on the kits in June 2017 - This sort of thing causes problems for historic clubs like Juventus, but 'A new chapter in the history of Juventus Football Club'
Bonucci joined Milan - “In the last part of the last season, this bond had faded a bit on both sides,”...“From now on,” Bonucci vowed, “I’ll think only of Milan.”

Despite Napoli setting the all-time points record for a Serie A runner-up with 91 (same as Juve previous 2 seasons) and a tally that would have won them the league in 10/13 seasons (3-Point win, 20 team), Juventus reached an outstanding 95pts and won another Coppa Italia. This extended their historic winning run in both competitions.

13th May 2018, Allegri became the first manager in Europe’s top 5 league to win 4 consecutive doubles!

In the CL they came back from 0-3 home defeat against Real Madrid and were 3-0 up at the Bernabéu before a dive by Vazquez which was given by Michael Oliver (because it’s Madrid ☹) Buffon was sent off and Penaldo scored. Heartache.

2018/19 - Buffon left Serie A after 23 career seasons, the last 17 being with Juventus, nine league titles and 640 caps! Bonucci returned after an unsuccessful spell at Milan, but this was overshadowed by one of the most talked about transfers of all time!

RONALDO
Juventus believed he would be the player to make the difference and help them achieve the holy grail of Champions League, for the first time in 23 years!

(Higuain, the previous most expensive signing in Italian football history, was shipped out after a poor 2nd season and to reduce the wage bill)

Juventus went on to one of their most comfortable titles, leading Serie A for 37/38 rounds, remaining undefeated until the 17th March 2019!
Atalanta ended their hopes for a 5th consecutive Coppa Italia in January,
but all eyes were on their CL tie against Atlético. Their trip to the Wanda Metropolitano ended in disaster with a 2-0 defeat. Ronaldo was signed to make the difference in this kind of games but Simeone’s men did their job well on the night.

3 weeks later they had a historic night in Turin! Atlético didn’t turn up, playing into the hands of a penalty box player like Ronaldo, 2 goals of his 3 came from crosses. The hattrick would come in the 86th minute after a Bernardeschi dive, because you cannot have a Champions League night without controversy.

QF time and they headed to Amsterdam to face Ajax who just knocked out Real Madrid handsomely in the previous round (5-3) with an astonishing 1-4 drubbing at the Bernabéu.
1-1 it finished with Ronaldo scoring first with a header before Neres replied early in the 2nd half with a wonderful goal. Despite Ajax dominating the 2nd half they couldn’t find the winner and it was unlikely Juventus would turn up like that in their home ground.

16th April 2019 (2nd Leg) Ronaldo headed them in front after 28 minutes from a corner, but it didn’t take long for the delightful Ajax team to draw level with Van de Beek.
Juventus were forced to replace Paulo Dybala at the start of the second half, but Ajax continued to press for the 2nd.
And it sure came...
The wonderkid and captain Matthijs de Ligt rose to power home Lasse Schone's corner, leaving Juventus needing two goals in the final 23 minutes!

Juventus didn’t look anywhere near up to the required level for this stage of the competition and Ajax should have rubbed it in more, but as the final whistle blew Ronaldo would not make an appearance in the last four for the first time since 2010!

Pressure on Allegri grew!
The title was wrapped up a week later with 5 games remaining, but the nightmares of the CL still clouded the club and it was announced 17th May 2019 that Allegri would not return to the Juventus bench for the 2019-2020 season.

"I leave a winning team which has the potential to repeat its achievements in Italy and have another great Champions League campaign. Unfortunately, some situations meant we couldn’t go all the way (during my time).”
"I don't know what will happen in future," Allegri told a news conference. "I need a little rest, too.
"After July 15 I might inevitably feel the desire to get back to work and I'll evaluate the situations that are proposed.
"Otherwise, I'll have a year to dedicate myself to my family and that band of crazies who are my friends. We'll see."

2019/20 sabbatical
It was as Allegri called it a 'year off', the Italian has gone from job to job since 2007, and he continues to suggest he won't work much longer.
It wasn't a hard financial year for Max as he continued to earn his remaining €7m for the last year of his Juventus contract!

Despite all this he had been linked to Arsenal and United throughout the season, but they were never an option at the time.

2020/21
"After a year out and five years at Juventus, I don't want to go back into the game and do badly. That would do my head in."
"I would like to experience the Premier League," Allegri said. "In Italy, I was in Milan four years. Five years in Juventus. Now I expect (to work again) in Italy, but it is difficult, or in England."
Intriguing! Looking forward to seeing what is next for Mr Allegri.
