Chapter 3
As the transfer window was coming to a close, I was extremely happy with the current squad at my disposal. The one area I did want to strengthen was in the striker position. I currently have Icardi and Mbappe as natural strikers, so another backup would have been good. However, I couldn’t find a suitable player so I left the squad as it is. One player did leave. Idrissa Gueye handed in a transfer request within days of me joining the club. When Real Madrid came in with an offer I was happy to let him go. The Spanish giants paid £16.25 million for the 31-year old's services.
We began the month with a 4-2 win against Metz. That result meant we had now gone six straight wins in the league consecutively. Ramos scored his second penalty of the season and Neymar scored a beautiful free-kick to seal the win.
Our highly anticipated Champions League group stage was finally drawn, and this season we will face Porto, Besiktas and Atalanta. There were certainly easier groups, however with the talent in our squad we should be able to comfortably win the group and progress into the knockout stage.
Our next league match was against Saint Etienne, and with our opening Champions League game just a few days later, I played a rotated side. Mauro Icardi started his first league game of the season and lead the line up front. It was Icardi who was the man of the match and carried us to a 3-1 victory as he sealed a hat-trick and made a case for himself to be our first choice striker. The opening Champions League group game was against FC Porto at home. We won the match 2-0, Icardi scored his fourth goal in just two games and Mbappe scored his first goal of the month, running from halfway all the way into Porto’s box to finish calmly. We followed the win against Porto with an outstanding 6-0 win in the league against Clermont. Sergio Ramos scored a hat-trick of penalties, in his ‘coming out party’, proving he still has the goal scoring ability that he was famous for in Madrid. Next was a 0-3 win away against Besiktas in a hostile environment, Icardi with a brace to continue his hot-streak of form. Then we ended the month with a 0-6 win away against Nice. That was the second 6-0 result in consecutive league games. Icardi and Neymar scored a brace each, and Ramos scored a header to add to his tally. We have now won 9 matches in a row and sit at the top of Ligue 1 by 2 points ahead of Marseille. We are top of our Champions League group by 3 points and looking unbeatable at the moment. There was some bad news to end the month, Herrera and Icardi will be out for the next 4 weeks through injury. Herrera has featured sporadically but it is unfortunate for Icardi as he was playing so well and cementing himself as our first choice striker, with Mbappe playing out wide.
Player of the Month: Mauro Icardi
This month there were some outstanding performers, but for me, Icardi was the cream of the crop. Honourable mentions to Sergio Ramos and Donnarumma. Ramos scored 5 goals in 6 games and Donnarumma proved to be an inspirational signing with four consecutive clean sheets. But Icardi proved his worth this month, I somewhat overlooked him to begin the season, opting for Neymar and Di Maria out wide and Mbappe to lead the line. But with Icardi up top and Neymar and Mbappe on the wings we have looked a notch better moving forward. The Argentine netted 8 goals this month in just 6 appearances and without doubt his best performance was his hat-trick against Saint Etienne. Sadly he will be out injured for the next month, but after his performances lately he will no doubt be straight back into the starting lineup when he returns.
@TheLFCFan - hope I don't need any luck too. We obviously have an incredible squad but as we see in real life, you don't just win the Champions League by having a stacked squad. We will need to perform well and earn the title.
@Justice - Thanks mate
