Rangers 2021-22

Rangers went about the new season with the task in mind of winning at least one domestic cup after finally ending Celtic's quest for 10-in-a-row last year in the league. Under Steven Gerrard the club were also becoming a frequent latter stage Europa League side and this was something that the club were hoping to continue. There were thirteen additions made to the side that won the league last time out, with the most notable names including John Lundstram, Amad Diallo, Thomas Strakosha and Aaron Ramsey. There was a hefty amount of departures across the main three squads in the summer too with Nathan Patterson, Scott Arfield, Cedric Itten, Steven Davis, Allan McGregor amongst the biggest names to leave whilst several players left on loan. After a massive revamp of the backroom staff the season was set and it was time to see what this squad could come up with.

I will be hoping to break as many club/players records as I can at the club as I have done in previous saves whilst also trying to succeed in Europe where I usually tend to struggle with Rangers. I tend to try and bring youth through whilst generally making the squad all Scottish too but this is something I want to try steer away from a little bit as I want to pick up EL/CL trophies as often as possible! This will be hard for me to do as I can't help but want to promote youth and develop national talent so I may end up having a predominantly young Scottish side with some real foreign talent in the mix. As you can see, the records got off to a good start as we beat the clubs previous record points total in the league as well as scoring a record amount of goals too. The league went as expected and the two domestic cups that followed were straight forward enough too but the Europa League? I did not expect us to go on and win that!!

After our exploits in real life I did go into this save with every hope of achieving the Europa League first season but after going through to the Group stages of the Champions League I thought that chance might have gone but for Villareal to sneak 2nd on better goal difference, after we both got 10 points, sending us into the EL. Where we would ultimately meat RL foes Braga and Frankfurt. The biggest test of all teams was Benfica but in truth we actually outplayed the opposition in most of our EL games as we switched between a 4-2-3-1 set up at home and a 4-1-2-2-1 when playing away. The final v Lazio wasn't quite as straight forward as it seems as the Italians took the lead with us playing the 4-1-2-2-1 formation which we switched immediately after their goal however, it took until some second half substitutions to kick start the game for us and we had a bit of a goal glut in the final half hour of the game to complete a hugely unexpected quadruple in the first season.

As I expected, I couldn't help but bring through some youth talent this season and that meant plenty game time for Leon King and Alex Lowry whilst several others like Rory Wilson, Tony Weston and Liam Morrison made some starts and got plenty time off the bench too. Morelos, Hagi, Kent, Aribo, Katic, Tavernier and Bassey were all main players throughout the season and without their contribution we wouldn't have done as well as we did. The number of goals and assists by Morelos, Hagi, Kent and Aribo were insane and then you add on Diallo who was supposed to be a bit part player but he was just phenomenal too. Roofe, Sakala and Lowry all managed a minimum of 10 goals each as well. The goals were flying in from everywhere, so much so, only 5 outfield players out of the 26 we used throughout the season failed to score. There are certainly some players I want to keep around indefinitely such as Morelos and Hagi whereas the others could maybe move on for the right price or they may end up staying long term too. It purely depends on a mega offer for them and also if they prove as invaluable going forward as they have done this year.

Records to beat
Sandy Archibald - 513 League appearances
Ally McCoist - 251 League goals
Sam English - 44 League goals in one season
Bill Struth - 18 League titles
There's a few players in your team that I really like (Aribo, Bassey, Barišić) and hope to see stick around for a long time to come. There's also some players that you're capable of selling to bankroll things if you wish to, but that's not completely necessary with European qualification every year! I'd love to see a strong Scottish/academy input to the first-team in years to come, but it's all dependent on those players coming through your intakes.

Best of luck :D
Bassey this year has just kept getting better and better literally every game I hope we can keep him or at least get £25m for him. I like Aribo too he is so good at dribbling even though he looks like he shouldn't with his big long legs he looks clumsy but manages to pull the dribbling off. I did like Barisic but he runs out of steam to quick and gives up on the ball too often he is frustrating although a great crosser of the ball and set piece taker. I love Morelos I will build around him for sure, him and Hagi are two I can't see myself selling. Hagi is great at set pieces and gets loads of assists so would probably only sell if I got another great set piece taker it seems to be a vital component nowadays. I do love bringing the Scottish boys through so will probably nurture them where possible and just have a sprinkling of foreign players.
