I keep giving my players simple advice on what I want them to do and the always get randomly upset even if what I am asking them to do is use there strengths. I ask Vertonghen to look to take long shots when ever possible and he got upset. This is very annoying if every conversation is going to randomly upset my players.
You don't mate, it's all part of being a manager!

That is not a part of being a manager at all. Your players do not get extremely upset at every small suggestion lol. That is not how the real world works.
i agree with Shane, that is realy annoying...Tom do you think that some 20 year old kid could/should say no to old school managers like Ferguson, Wenger???young players such as Vertonghen need to listen their managers...if I say to him to jump in the well, then he must do it with smile on his face ;)
well it's all to do with that particular players attitude isn't it?

i agree with that too, but in real life you could say or do a lot more to him than in FM...i would punish him for unprofessional behavior for that, but if you do that in FM then at least 5-6 other players would be unhappy

That's exactly the problem though - it's just a game . . .
Well I think they are intergrating the gain their respect part before you make loads of changes?
Well you also have to consider you reputation.. If you're an inexperienced manager it's less likely the player will listen to your suggestions!

world class
The reputation of the manager should not matter on every tiny suggestion. I can barely say high to a player without him flipping out.

Loads of changes? I am talking about simply saying to a player, "i would like you to try more long shots"
Personally I rarely have any issues from my players or conversations. I'll make some suggestions, and while some of these might be obvious, following them will lessen the chances of a player becoming upset.

1. Low controversy & high professionalism - Buy players with a decent personality or simply don't suggest things to a player you think is arrogant or lazy
2. Relevant suggestions - don't ask a player with a 3 in strength to start taking powerful shots, similarly don't ask your snail paced headless chicken winger to try and beat the offside trap.
3. Respect - do you have a high reputation, does your player respect you? Is Messi gonna listen to Avram Grant(poor manager) when he suggests "try long range passes" or Pep Guardiola(good manager) when he says the same thing.
4. Click the right button - clicking the WRONG button can have disastrous consequences such as moving rooney to the reserves, starting a match with Wes Brown in goal or clicking the Back button on your browser before you posted that 1000 word essay.
