Foreign captains?

I am in the Jan '12 transfer window with a BSP club, and my ass man thought I needed to strengthen my left midfield, I disagreed, and that is nothing new. One of the "suggestions" to give me cover was Kayleden Brown, a Welsh left winger cum striker who had shown bog all interest in signing for me when I had watched him play in the England Triallist matches earlier in the season.

With that in mind, I approached him - and behold - he wanted to sign.

Not that I would sign Brown now, but I had my eye on a German goalie and an Italian bean-pole CB who has excellent influence scores....who had both previously not wanted to discuss contracts with me....and now do. It's amazing what being unemployed for six months does!

I had originally bought in a DRLC - Aynsley McDonald - as bench cover, but circumstance conspired and he became my starting CB. I was looking in the transfer market for a fullback cover, because that is where I see my gap.

The ideal solution: Bring in the beanpole Italian, make him starting CB and Captain in place of McDonald, and leave McDonald on bench to cover defensive positions and start as and when required, but has anyone had problems appointing a foreigner captain? His influence score is 18, and my scouts think he is determined and a leader.

Foreign captains usually function just as well as local captains. However, you don't want to make him your captain right after he comes to your club, as it will certainly upset your current captain and probably the rest of the team as well. A rule I use is that I do not appoint a player to be my captain until he has been at the club for at least one year AND speaks the language.

my advice is to go along with signing this player but only him your 3rd choice captain. This way he will take the armband on the field on occassion and it wont disrupt the team as a whole. I wouldnt advise changing the captain/vice captain until the end of season incase it has a bad affect on morale

Thanks for the advice Zonnegod and bigrich - he's in the team and seems to be working well with everyone - I don't have any other Italians in the team at the moment and he doesn't speak a word of English so that is something I am working on now.

No problem! I hope for you that he has a decent adaptability - as it will improve the speed at which he learns the language I think

I think he must - scout reports early on, before I could sign him said that he'd be adaptable living in another country.

Picked up a fairly average coach who speaks English and basic Italian and we'll see how that goes.........

However, I doubt that the English & Italian speaking coach will make your player learn the language faster. Even though it would sound logical IRL, I doubt if there is script in FM that does that..

I'll reassess things when, as you suggested, the Italian can speak good Inglese.

On another note, I've just won the BSP - and now they want to put a statute up? I'd prefer the board listened to me, they have been shocking this term - after being so accommodating last year - haven't been able to improve facilities - but that might be because my academy is being built? And they couldn't find a parent club, nor let me go professional. Argh!!!! :-)
