SIMON GRAYSON SACKED BY LEEDS

http://www.leedsunited.com/javaImages/f4/1b/0,,10273~9313268,00.jpg
Simon Grayson has been dismissed alongside assistant manager Glynn Snodin and coach Ian Miller

Leeds United have announced in a club statement today that Simon Grayson has been sacked after a poor run of results (including a 2-1 reverse against Peterborough on the opening day) has seen them slip to 23rd in the table.

In the statement today, Chief Executive Officer Shaun Harvey said "before pre-season kicked off in July, the three of us- Simon, Ken [Bates] and I- met at Ken's home in Monaco. We decided that after an impressive 7th placed finish last year, it would be a good idea to build up a squad that can continue the challenge for the playoffs. We acknowledged that it was going to be tougher with out Kilkenny, Johnson, Schmeichel and Gradel; but that's the way football is these days and we had full faith in him to find adequate replacements. We sat down with him this morning and came to the conclusion that he was struggling to get the best out of a promising intake of new new players, and that it would be best for all parties concerned if we found someone who can do this."

The board have refused to comment on potential replacements, but the favourite appears to be ex-England international, one-club man and former Leeds hero Josh Townend. He also refused to comment on this but if he is the man everyone wants, Leeds could well make it happen.

Leeds hero returns...

Leeds United can confirm that they have appointed club hero Josh Townend. The new manager played 927 games and scored 649 goals for Leeds in a career that spanned over 20 years that saw Leeds get relegated from and win promotion back to the first division by securing the second division title in 1982 and 1990, win the first division title and community shield in 1992 and reach the semi final of the Champions League in 2001. He retired at the end of the 2002-03 season, aged 38. He also played for England, being capped 49 times and scoring 8 goals. He was a part of the side that went to the the Italia 90 World Cup before being dropped after a dispute with coach Sir Bobby Robson. He was recalled to the England side by Glenn Hoddle and participated in Euro 96 in England, World Cup 98 in France, Euro 2000 in Belgium and Holland before playing a short part in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea.

The 46-year-old said in an interview "I've been out of the job for 8 years now and it's great to be back. When we went down in 2004, I decided to get my coaching badges just in case the board were outsourcing for a manager. On this occasion, it wasn't to be as we know, I've applied for every Leeds manager vacancy since and I'm delighted to have finally succeeded this time around. This is a great club and as a fan, I know how badly we need promotion. As a fellow fan, I had congratulated Simon Grayson and commiserated on his dismissal and even without experience, I can imagine it's a gut wrenching experience when you get the sack by your favourite club. But that was then and this is is now. We must now look forward and build for a season in which we can at least survive the drop and I'm over joyed to be the man in charge if this operation."
