A Fresh Start

Arsene Wenger has been sacked by Arsenal Football Club. There had been rumours circulating yesterday that a decision was imminent, and it has now been confirmed.

In a brief statement, American owner Stan Kroenke said "The decision to let Arsene Wenger go was a very difficult one, but the board and I felt a fresh start was needed". He also added, "We will look to have a new manager in place within the next seven days".

Media speculation suggests Fabio Capello, Guus Hiddink and Rafa Benitez are the front runners to take over at the Emirates.

Guus Hiddink has told Sky Sports News that he is not interested in taking the vacant manager's job at Arsenal. Hiddink said "While it is nice to have your name mentioned as a possible successor to Arsene Wenger, I am very happy at Anzhi and have no desire to leave".

With the new season approaching and the club leaving for a pre-season tour of China, the Arsenal board will have to be quick as they look to appoint a new manager.

Rafa Benitez has said he would love to return to manage in England. During an interview, Benitez told BBC Sport that he would listen to any offer from Arsenal should one arise. He said, "I love English football, the premier league will always be close to my heart and I feel I am ready to manage again in England".

Despite declaring his interest, Rafa Benitez will have to remain patient as Arsenal have refused to comment on any possible managerial candidates.
