2013/14 Midseason Report

2013-14 Eredivisie Season

As of Jan 2014, we sit atop the Eredivisie in first place with 43 points (14-1-1) playing one game fewer than everyone. This was almost identical to last season when we were 16-1-1 at this point. Our domination is evident, but interestingly we have scored fewer goals but held opponents to only 8!

2013-14 Champions League Season

We were dealt a favorable draw for the most part except for getting group 2012/13 winners FC Porto (defeated Barcelona).

Vittese absolutely surprised not only reaching the knockout stages, but winning Group F ahead of FC Porto. Big wins included:

7-0 (CSKA Moscow)

3-1 (at Porto)

Check out these impressive stats!

More Stats…

Vittesse then received a good draw in knockout round 1 where they will face Leverkusen.

We again suffered various injuries, but our depth really came through during the 1st half. Wilfried, Benitez, Labyad, and Ait Fana are a few that were again bit by the injury bug. As you will notice below, we really spread out the production; a real team effort.

And finally, here is a look at where our facilities now stand in addition to owning the Gelredome (no more rent). We have one more training facility upgrade that should be completed by Nov 2014. A State of the Art Training Facility is one the way!

With a transfer budget in the neighborhood of 9mil, we are sure to dip our feet in the transfer market waters soon. I have worked many hours with the scouts as we look at securing more young talent to bolster the youth ranks. Stay tuned for transfer info and the 2nd half of what we hope is a good Champions League run and a 3rd straight Eredivisie title.
Greetings all,

With a Vitesse update coming later today, anyone fair to guess how we did? With a 7 point lead over AZ as well as a 9 point lead over PSV and Ajax at the midway point, could the side hold on for a 3rd straight Eredivisie title?

What about Leverkusen in our first trip to Champions League? Could we see them off and go even farther?

Things have never been better at Vittese and after being included in the Dutch managerial HOF, the club is indebted to me.

With offers sure to come for the likes of Bressan, Xulu, Oscar and others, can we keep everyone happy while developing future stars?

Surely offers will begin to spill in from other clubs begging for my services.

Stay tuned...
Nice and steady! keep it up!
2013/14 Season Review

The January transfer window provided few developments but nothing more important than the sale of winger Karim Ait Fana to LOSC Lille (5m) and the purchase of French DM Francis Coquelin from Arensal (3.5m).

Vittese would continue on in their season, but nothing more important than defeating Leverkusen 3-2 on aggregate to set yet another first for the club by reaching the Champions League quarterfinals. The next test would be Italian giants Juventus in the final 8. We went all the way to a Penalty shootout losing 3-1 after two 1-1 draws at both home then away.

We found ourselves so close and hungry for more. Next year we aim to match what we did this last season, a trip to the quarterfinals of Champions League! The financial boost was also felt, as the club would receive some 5m in extra winnings after leaving the group stages with 8m in Champions League TV revenue also added to the coffers.

The season would wrap in a rather workman like and uneventful fashion. We found ourseleves matched with Almere City (who?) in the Dutch Cup final after they surprised to get there. We dominated the match and would go on to win 2-1, receiving 2.6m for our victory.

At around the same time, we clinched our 3rd straight Eredivise title. The supporters and board were proud to do the double, another first for Vittese. We would finish 14 pts clear of Ajax with an amazing +57 goal differential conceding only 21 goals all season long in league.

This season was an odd one. With yet more injuries to Benitez, Coquelin, Wilfried, Zabyad and others, we relyed upon depth (especially youth) to get through the remainder of the season and during our champions league run. Here is a look at our 1st team stats and the Eredivise top performers.

1st Team Stats (sorted by ratings) Take a look at how deep we were!

Obvious top performers were Wilfried, Xulu, Bressan but contributions from youngsters Podstawski (18yrs), Stastny (15yrs), Zwarthoed (18yrs), Demirci (19yrs) and Gutierrez were invaluable

Eredivise Top Performers

In the end, I was awarded the Eredvisie Manager of the year, Giorgi Chanturia won the league Young Player of the Year and defender Ognjen Vranjes would claim the Vitesse Player of the Year as voted by the fans.

Recent Dutch rankings of reputation would see us actually fall back to 6th in Holland and with a few key players being pursued along with the injuries of the last season; many felt the offseason could bring changes. How could a team who had won 3 league titles and progressed to the final 8 in Europe’s highest competition be a team in flux?

Here is a rundown of other club areas:

Players out on loan (look how our guys at Rostock fared):

Board Overview (unused 8m transfer budget):

Confidence (check out that Squad Harmony)

Finances: (a profit/loss of 7.7m as opposed to the negative 600k last season):

The players have now left, 2014 World Cup is starting up soon and the transfer window is now open. Bob Dylan once said “The times they are a changin”…

2014 Offseason Begins

The board rewarded our 3rd straight Eredivise title and Chamions League quarterfinal appearance how? By letting us spend the 8+million we didn’t spend last season.

It was not long after that we began to see player movement begin…

Pape Souare (purchased for 5m, sold for 4m to Fenerbahce)

Felipe Gutierrez (purchased for, sold for 1.5m to Sporting of Spain)

Christian Benitez (purchased for 1.8m, sold for 2.5m to Leeds)

Zabyad sent on loan to FC Twente for the 2014/15 season w/ agreed 2.4m price.

Vitesse Profits announced:

European Richest Clubs List (moving on up):

Players brought in on Transfer

Gustavo Ferrero (AML/R, 2.8m) – Just like we at Vitesse look for; either footed with all the makings of a great inside forward, possibly even and Advanced Forward. At 18, he was a good find for 2.8m.

Ricardo Alvarez (AMR/MC, 1m Loan Fee, 3m Buyout) – An interesting play here. I wanted some experience an a little more at both the Inside Forward (AMR) and Advanced Playmaker (MC) roles. With a 3m buyout, the options are open.

Angelo Ogbonna (DC/DL, 3.3m) – Replaces the void Xulu leaves, taking over Vranjes spot in rotation with Kashia as Vranjes moves to heading/jumping DC. A solid, affordable signing who can cover DL as well.

Marco Calderoni (DL, 7m) – Replaces Souare at DL as a natural left-footer. Calderoni is a very similar but with slightly better technical and mental attributes. Could also provide backup at other positions once retrained.
I deeply regret to inform everyone that I have officially lost my Vitesse save(along with my laptop, both of whom are at the bottom of a lake). I will be forced too start a new save. I will say that we were cruising through much like season(s) before and were in the middle of Champions League drawn with Barca and SLB.

Stay tuned as I will be starting another new save in FM12 with my new laptop. :)
