BREAKING NEWS: Neil Lennon has resigned from his post as Celtic manager with immediate effect. Lennon, who incredibly led his Celtic team to the SPL title last year after being a whopping 15 points behind at one stage, had this to say

“It is with great sadness that today, I have handed in my resignation to our Chief Executive Peter Lawell. I have had the time of my life over the past few years, however, I felt the time was right to leave. I need to rediscover my love for the game, that raw passion I felt as a player. My aim is to take at least a year out of the job to spend time with my wife and kids. I’d like to thank the board for their unconditional support over the last few years, but most importantly I’d like to thank the wonderful fans of this football club. They are the life and soul of the club, the atmosphere they create really gives the team that extra bit of energy that they need. On a personal level, they have supported me throughout the toughest period of my life and for that I am eternally grateful.”

Sky Sports News: Celtic set to announce new manager


Chief Executive Peter Lawell: "Over the past few weeks, we have conducted an extensive search to identify a new manager. First and foremost, we wanted a manager with experience of playing football at the top level and a manager who has proven himself as a manager. Secondly, we wanted a manager who represents everything this great club stands for. And finally, we wanted a manager who understood the club and it's fans. Taking everything into consideration, we narrowed down our search to one man. We are delighted to announce, after swift negotiations, that this man has accepted the challenge of managing Celtic Football Club. Please welcome, Henrik Larsson."



Henrik Larsson: "Thanks for the introduction Peter. I'd just like to say that I am delighted to be sitting here as the new manager of Celtic. As you will all know, Celtic is a club very close to my heart, so for me to be back here after a fantastic 7 year playing career is really something. As far as the backroom staff goes, I'd like to say they will all be remainingg with us. Obviously Johann and I played in the same team a few years back, and although I gave him nightmares before training sessions, he will be staying as the teams assistant manager. To the fans, all I can say is this team will work for you. We may win or we may lose, but I can guarantee that this team will do their utmost to give you something to celebrate on a Saturday by playing attractive football."

Reactions

Michael Devine, Celtic Supporter: "Am I pleased to see Henrik Larsson back at the club? I can't say I am. I grew up worshipping Larsson as a player, but I just can't see him doing well as manager. He has limited experience as a manager, and I fear he could tarnish his reputation. Poor move from the board."

Alec McGinty: "Larsson is awryt a s'pose. A woulda prefert that guy Owen Boyle or witevr his name is. Naw achtool, we shoulda git wee gordo back in he wis top notch that guy."

Despite the negativity of some supporters, most fans welcomed Larsson back to the club

Ross Forbes: "I'm delighted Henrik is back at the club. He was inspirational as a player and led the team, hopefully he can do the same as manager and lead the club to it's former glory."

Jamie Redknapp: "I think the appointment of Henrik Larsson is a fantastic one. I can't think of many other people who know the club better than Larsson. He is cool, calm, respectful and composed and you need those qualities to manage Celtic"

Gordon Strachan: "Inspired is the only word I can use to describe the appointment of Henrik. He is a total gentleman, knows whats best for the club and it's fans and has an unbelievable work ethic. I spoke to him a few weeks ago and he is so passionate about management, I'll be shocked if the doesn't succeed at Celtic."

Henrik Larsson, announced last week as new Celtic manager, will have all thoughts focused on Celtic's up and coming Champions League Qualifiers against AE Limassol of Cyprus. Although a virtual unknown in World and European football, the Celtic legend will need to ensure that complacency doesn’t become an issue as he tries to bring back European football to Celtic Park.
To say the pressure in on the new Celtic man is an understatement. With no Old Firm games for at least 3 years, there has never been more emphasis on qualification for the UEFA Champions League. Larsson, who left his post at Landskrona BoIS no less than two months before joining the club where he made his name, will be expecting to at the very least qualify for the group stages:

Larsson: “Not qualifying isn’t really an option for us. Obviously we have no Rangers this season, which will make things difficult for us financially. With that in mind, our supporters will want the glory games in the Champions League group stages and our top priority at this moment in time is to bring these type of games back to Glasgow.”

Celtic have boosted their hopes of Qualifying for the Champions League group stages after enjoying 2/3rds of possession against the distinctly average AE Limassol.
In a largely uneventful match, Celtic full back and Sweden international Mikael Lustig’s wayward cross looped over the top of the Limassol goalkeeper and hit the back of the net. AE Limassol threatened to create a few chances, but the final ball often found it’s way into the feet of the excellent Efe Ambrose.
It is worth noting that Henrik Larsson chose to adopt a very effective and relatively unusual 4-2-2-2 formation, with two holding midfielders and two Inside forwards. A tactical masterplan or a one off risk?
