I recently started ths second season of my Southampton FC save and we are in the premier league. We have started very poorly and it is looking likely that this season will be a struggle to stay in the premier league. Can anyone possibly give me some hints and tips about what is key for survival in the premier league?

You need to acquire value bargains!
Step 1 - Examine your own team and identify your strong players. They will be the CORE of your team. This also allows you to identify weak areas that you need to improve vs areas you are already good.
Step 2 - Scan the wires right away for good free signings! If you have decent scouting/assistant manager you can have him help you prepare a list. Strike quickly before the good free agents are taken!
Step 3 - Get your scouting process started asap and look for bargains. Get a good mix of vets and cheap wonderkids with potential try to strengthen each third of the field. Check the wonderkids database. Then negotiate transfers to get a couple of them to augment the core of your team. The rule should be at least one vet and one youngster paired up at max. You can't win with kids, but your team needs to grow in strength as the seasons progress! Check the wonderkids FM2012 list for the best bargains!
Step 4 - Consider LOANS if you can't outright afford to buy a player to shore up a position of need.
Step 5 - When negotiating a pricey transfer use the 48 month method. That is low initial transfer payment, plus a clause for the rest of the value of the contract spread out over 48 months. This allows you to afford players you normally couldn't. Good luck and enjoy FM!!
