Magpies in match-fixing scandal

Newcastle United have found themselves in hot water this morning after the FA announced that they are looking into allegations of match-fixing. The Geordies overachieved last season, finishing fifth and qualifying for the Europa League, just two years after they were promoted from the Championship.

According to sources within the FA, players from other teams were allegedly paid large sums of money to perform poorly in games against Newcastle, while they themselves pocketed a big payoff in order to lose the penultimate game of the season to Manchester City ensuring that the Citizens only had to win their final game against Q.P.R to seal the Premier League title. The source also added that it was manager Alan Pardew was the suspect under the scanner rather than the club itself and that the fixing of games likely happened without the knowledge of higher-ups including owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias.

Manager Pardew however, has hit out at these accusations. "I think it's ridiculous that they are actually starting an investigation. Just because we have finished 5th does not mean we have cheated. The players, the staff and I all have worked our socks off and with some luck, we've done well. These allegations of match-fixing are baseless and this is just a witch hunt by the FA."

Newcastle United F.C have not released an official statement regarding the situation.

Pardew Sacked

Despite being cleared of all match-fixing charges by the FA, Toon manager Alan Pardew has been sacked by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.

Despite deep investigations into his dealings, detectives have failed to find enough to prove the charges to be true, and thus the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence and Pardew escaped a ban and a fine. However, according to sources high up in the FA as well as a member of the Newcastle United board, Pardew is "99% guilty".

This latest decision to sack Pardew does not come as a shock, as Mike Ashley is looking to clean up the club's image and ward away the bad PR that has haunted the club ever since he took over.

But as the start of the season closes in, Ashley and the rest of the Newcastle board will waste no time in their search for a new manager. Popular candidates include former France and Bordeaux manager Laurent Blanc - who is currently without a club - as well as the likes of Wigan's Roberto Martínez and Montpellier's René Girard. Certain sections of the media are also throwing Geordie legend Alan Shearer's name into the mix - who would be a popular choice among the Toon faithful.

Magpies unveil new manager

Newcastle have named recently retired former England international striker Michael Owen as their new manager for the 2012-13 season.

The decision was taken during a board meeting last evening and comes as a shock to many, as Owen beat accomplished candidates such as Laurent Blanc, Roberto Martínez and René Girard to the job, and also due to the fact that there is no love lost between Owen and the Toon Army.

The Newcastle faithful are up in arms about the appointment of Owen, 32, and have already organised a protest to take place before the team's first friendly game to demand the resignation of Ashley and Llambias.
