Flynn Steps Down
Doncaster Rovers are now looking for a new manager after caretaker manager Brian Flynn returned to his role as Director of Football at the Keepmoat after an unsuccessful end to the 2011-12 season, in which Rovers were unable to avoid the drop to League One from the Championship. They will be hoping for an immediate return to England's second tier, but everyone knows it is never easy to bounce straight back up after relegation.
Brian Flynn, now 56, took over the management of Doncaster in January last season, after Dean Saunders left the club to join Wolverhampton Wanderers. Doncaster were already close to the drop at this point when Saunders deserted Donny. Flynn was then chosen by the board of directors to take over until the end of the season, and unfortunately failed to save Doncaster from the drop. Since the end of last season, there has been much speculation about whether Flynn would leave his caretaker role, or whether he would be offered the job on a permanent basis, on the premise of getting Doncaster straight back into the Championship. However, this speculation has now been put to bed, and now football fans and pundits are eagerly awaiting the appointment of Flynn's successor.
It is thought that many managers have already ruled themselves out of the running for the vacant post, with many citing the lack of funding available to improve an ageing squad which includes players such as the 42-year-old Neil Sullivan. However, the three favorites for the Doncaster job are former Tottenham, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Germany midfielder Christian Ziege, former Ipswich and Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell, and former Manchester City legend, and former Oldham manager Paul Dickov. Dickov has been out of work since resigning from his post with Oldham in February, just days after a famous 3-2 FA Cup victory over Liverpool, and is the odds-on favourite by the bookies, with some bookmakers even offering odds as short as 1-3.
