Hi, I'm known as lets_play_CM2, I've come to share my story with you. It's a little old but I hope you like it, it started way back in 1996...

I'm the new manager of England and my reign begins with defeat to Norway, it's not a friendly. I thought a natural 4-4-2 would be the best option but the Norwegians bossed it from the whistle.

Ever since that first defeat, our qualification for France '98 had been a precarious one. We lost to Armenia despite totally dominating our opponents and when we did finally qualify it only came after a play off victory win versus Bulgaria. We can at least be proud that we did it the English way.

We've done it though, it's official and we will be going. The FA are arranging flights and the accommodation is being sought. I've requested a few measures be taken however - no bars that will willingly play host to any form of a dentist chair within a 10 mile radius being priority number one. If this can at least be achieved then I believe we have half a chance.

Our group looks like this:

We face a Mark Bosnich Australia, Dan Petrescu's Romania and a South African Fish. None of which one could presume a walk over.

I must go now, I have friendlies I must attend and a team to prepare.

Yes Yes Yes Yes YES

I hope Croatia does much better than in real life... say, a win?

Our trip to France '98 - The Group Phase

I'll be the first to admit the confidence in the camp was low; our qualifying campaign certainly hadn't convinced the bookies. Let me put it this way, I had instructed my agent to draw up a draft resignation letter before we had left Dover.

Our first fixture, who joker of the squad Gazza would refer to them “the Slim Shady's", was Romania. We knew they would be tough but we had nothing to lose, it's not like we'd reach a final or anything.

In the 86th minute with the side’s level at 1-1, Robbie 'The Prowler' Fowler sent the English into hysterics with a goal from nowhere. Sent through by man-of-the-match Darren Anderton, Fowler rounded the keeper Stelea to almost certainly put England top of group A. Not to be outdone and in the only minute of added time, the Slim Shady maestro, one Gheorghe Hagi, earned our opponents the pre-match expected draw with a sublime curler from 18yrds, Seaman nor his pony tail could get near it.

We had come close but what had become obvious was that England had not made the trip to France for the cheap cigarettes and spirits, they had come to make a game of it and the cheap vices were a bonus.

Our next opponent Australia came and went without a fight. A 2-0 win with Shearer and Sir Les exacting the killer blows.

We could not rely on Romania slipping up so only a win against our final group game opponents South Africa would do. Gareth Southgate saw to that scoring the only goal of the game, it was not penalty.

We were through to the knock-outs and we were to face Denmark...
Really nice mate! A story like this is definitely to be followed! :D

England for the World Cup!
I'm surprised that Anderton hasn't been injured yet :P

Our trip to France '98 - Denmark

Denmark looked like a good draw for us even with the fantastic Laudrup brothers and that Great Dane between the sticks.

We were on a high after getting through our group so I allowed myself to consider going further but that night before the game was awful. The butterflies were doing somersaults in my somersaulting stomach keeping me awake. I only managed to drift off after a quick phone call to my friend Eileen*.

The referee blew his whistle to kick off and the first half sped through in less than minute. Another tap of the spacebar and we were away at triple speed for the second half; this game could be over before my wife brings me my coffee. "Did you hear that sweetheart, coffee yeah? Been waiting ages!".
50mins came and went, 60mins came and went, 70mins, 80mins and then......SHEARER! GOAL! Get the f@#k IN!!! Like a knight in shining armour, Sir Alan - the sheet metal workers boy from Newcastle upon Tyne - had sent his manager and the entire English contingent into one almighty frenzy.

We'd done it, we were through to another round, there was no stopping us now, no matter who we got....

Germany was next.

* Eileen Drewery.
Amazing to see someone going old school with their choice of game!
Great story so far and long may it continue!
